Markey, Gardner both make lists Wednesday

A big day today for 4th Congressional District incumbents and challengers in the list department.

Incumbent Betsy Markey made The Hill’s list of “50 Most Beautiful 2009.”

See The Hill coverage here:

For more in-depth coverage of this topic, see my Coloradoan blog:

Gardner, meanwhile, was among the first 13 GOP candidates named to the National Republican Congressional Committe’s “Young Guns” program. Some details here:

I suspect the Young Guns list will be more important in shaping the CO4 campaign, but the “50 Most Beautiful” list probably has more buzz factor.

  1. Meanwhile, the NRCC’s comment in the young guns story was nothing short of ludicrous:

“…I am confident that he will be successful in his effort to defeat Betsy Markey, who has acted as a mere rubber-stamp for Nancy Pelosi’s reckless anti-jobs agenda.

What was Pete Sessions smoking when he came up with that one? Jeez.

  2. Cory Gardner has raised a lot of money for a non-incumbent who might face a primary.  $200,000+ means a tough reelection fight for Rep.Markey

    1. if you look past the gross total and analyze where his donations came from, it shows he is a long way from being an effective challenger.

First, his contributions came from two places . . . Yuma County (many many family contributions in big dollars) and the Denver metro area.

He received virtually no contributions from Larimer, Weld and Boulder counties where 85% of the votes reside. Unless he can raise money from those three counties, and we’ll know when the October reports are filed, he won’t be successful. He has to show he can raise substnatial amounts of money inside the core of the district.

Second, the Republican Party is still badly divided in places like Larimer County and Mr. Gardner is considered by one side of that divide as one of the primary reasons the Republican Party has failed so badly in the past two elections in Colorado. The moderate wing of the party considers him one of those legislators who has refused to govern in the state legislature. He has many important fences to mend within the Republican Party. Unless he can mend those fences and raise money from the core of the district he won’t be much of a challenger.

The jury is still out. Time will tell.

      1. You can only vote no on spend and tax policies that lack any return on the invested dollar.

Say R36, how’s the Guv polling coming … any new hints of light or just shadows cast from failed policies?
