David Harsanyi Off To Glenn Beck Land

  • by: Colorado Pols

A bit of a surprise until you realize it isn’t, as columnist David Harsanyi updated on Facebook:

Bittersweet news. I’ll be leaving the Denver Post, a place I’ve worked nearly 7 years. I’ve accepted the position of editorial manager at Glenn Beck’s publishing company, which recently extended a joint venture with Simon & Schuster. I’ll be acquiring, writing, editing and marketing manuscripts. Also, I’ll be a columnist/blogger at Beck’s site, The Blaze…

We’ll miss Mr. Harsanyi in the local media market, if for no other reason than the wonderful content he provided for such posts as “Harsanyi Loves Him Some Free Union Benefits,” “Amazon ‘Job Loss’ Fiction Continues,” and our favorite, “Spelling ‘Mendacity’ H-a-r-s-a-n-y-i.” And yes, we consider Harsanyi’s career move to be brilliantly appropriate, with the small caveat that no responsible person will ever cite his work again.

Perhaps we’ll land a spot on Glenn Beck’s chalkboard at long last? Will we finally get that George Soros check if we do? Remember, it’s all about who you know in this business.

  1. He had to reapply a few dozen times before Beck was convinced the guy named “Harsanyi” wasn’t a scary Muslim. That’s awful close to “Hussein-y,” you know. We can’t have anyone Hussein-y on the Glenn Beck team.

      1. And antisemitism is antisemitism, whether the targets worship in a synagogue or a mosque.

And, of course, reform Jews know what to do about antisemitism… succeed in spite of ’em. That REALLY makes them mad. Up with Jews and Muslims (and every other open minded believer or non-believer); down with Beck!

  2. He had personal integrity and was openly an agnostic who espoused his libertarian views without bashing gays or other groups unpopular with the dominant religious right win of the GOP.  He was also an infallibly courteous person to work with.

      1. even though he’s totally wrong about Harsanyi being missed.

Come on, Voy — Harsanyi had no interest in Colorado or Colorado issues. All he ever wrote about was national stuff, and his take was never as interesting, perceptive, or well-written as any of the national righty columnists.

For Harsanyi, Colorado was just some pit stop en route to some DC or NYC gig. Kinda weird that he’ll end up working with Beck on Mars.

    1. I thought there was some sort of rational core to the guy, but now I’m positively sure there isn’t. Nobody with a rational core would join the Glenn Beck tinfoil hat propaganda operation.

    2. I think “Harsanyi” started out as you describe, but he has gotten meaner and meaner, IMHO.  I will glad to see him go.

I can not imagine who will replace him.

    3. I also wonder why someone with a good steady job writing op-eds for a major metropolitan newspaper in a shrinking market for that kind of work would put out resumes?  Perhaps the writing was already on the wall.

Harsanyi seems an awfully poor fit for Glenn Beck’s operation, as it is a place where civility is a liability, God is at the top of the agenda, Birthers are considered normal, and demagogery is the order of the day.  Hard to see it lasting, despite Harsanyi’s right of center politics.
