From the Rocky Mountain News:
Rep. Tom Tancredo has asked the Federal Elections Commission to say whether his congressional campaign can give up to $50,000 to a Colorado group behind a proposed constitutional amendment restricting state services for illegal immigrants.
Tancredo, R-Littleton, is seeking an advisory opinion that could have national implications. It could clarify a gray area of the law and determine how much members of Congress can get involved in state ballot initiatives.
Campaign treasurer Jon Ponder said Tancredo has not decided exactly how much to contribute to the group, Defend Colorado Now, but proposed the $50,000 figure in hopes of getting clear guidance on what’s allowed.
The group is trying to qualify a ballot measure that would amend the Colorado Constitution to prohibit illegal immigrants from benefiting from state services, except those mandated by the federal government, such as K-12 education and emergency medical care.

Why does the RMN make it seem like this is a group Tancredo just happens to agree with? Tancredo started this specific effort in 2003.
Their ballot wording is death. This one will never pass, and now it’s too late for them to simplify the language.
So let me get this straight. Tancredo thinks that even if they are working here (hired by Coloradoans) that they should just do their work and shut up?
Once again we find some more White Supremeacy fans:

This is getting wierd.
How in the world is this a “grey area”? You would think that the boundaries between Federal and State campaigns would be clearly drawn. Beauprez can’t use his Congressional funds for his Governor’s race…
OTOH at least Tancredo is asking and not hiding, unlike some other conservative I&R groups.
Beaupreznit-If anything this is a watered down, nothingburger according to Ritter. What the heck are you talking about that the wording is “death”?
Druid-This issue is about a line being drawn in the sand. I’m sick of paying for illegal’s. That is not racist. It is just a fact.
Phoenix-I would hate to relie on your judgement on campaign finance…you have no clue what you are talking about.
Why thank you. I’m glad you added to my knowledge…
But before you do, you might read a bit more closely; I’m not saying it isn’t, I’m saying it shouldn’t be.
Guesswho coninues to whine.
/b/House committee OKs border wall/b/
The Associated Press
PHOENIX – A legislative committee wants state voters to approve building a border wall to keep illegal immigrants out.
There is no cost estimate for the wall.
A state House of Representatives committee approved it 8-1 yesterday.
It would be funded with a tax on electronic funds transfers.

It’s a start.
Guesswho,
Go read the ballot language. The wording is impenetable, and I already know what it’s trying to say. There’s a good reason that “no” is the default option on ballot initiative.
“Go read the ballot language.”
……..
Have you read the ballot language? Where can it be found?
Why bother? I’m a Democrat, and of course I don’t believe illegals should benefit from state services. It’s a no-brainer.
I think the real issue is — who’s hiring these guys?! The ones who know they are, those are the criminals.
BMR, you can find a copy at The Bell Policy Center (PDF).
Thank you PR and BMR – both good links.
On one extreme we have our guests getting everything for free on the other we have them getting nothing. Maybe like I did overseas, they should they pay their fair share in taxes, etc… Pay the US govt $2-3k annually to track them (call that local fees, CML would love it), pay a entry/exit fees of 50-100 bucks (cheap by intl standards), enable nirmal mortgages (minimally backed by their nations counsel or employer), and give them all the tax credits for acting like the average US wage earner then I might accept the growth. This is one significant segment of the growth we seek to control. … if it moves tax it, if it continues to move regulate it, if it stops incent it to move.
It is becoming clearer and clearer that Tom Tancredo is basically the puppet for racists like John Tanton who makes no secrets of his assoociations with White Supremacists. Now Tom is joining in the fund raising efforts with Tanton for Defend Colorado Now, or “De-Brown Colorado Now” as I like to call it.
Who is one of Tancredo’s main funders? John Tanton. Who is one of “De-Brown Colorado Now”‘s funders? US Inc, FOUNDED by John Tanton.
Coloradoans need to wake up and see that Tancredo is rapidly becoming a doorway for White Supremacists to make inroads into government. Is this what we want?
Another non-starter point in the argument: calling it ‘racist’.
Sorry, that dog just won’t hunt. I want ALL illegal immigration addressed.
You may feel that way BMR, Tancredo and Tanton do not. When you see the ties it is stagering the amount of affiliations with VERY questionable groups come up. And John Tanton is at the center of most of it. Tanton is almost single-handedly responsible for funding Tancredo.
“That dog wont hunt”? I applaud you for not being “racist” Tancredo and Tanton however are different “dogs” altogether.
Oh, I see – you have the inside on what Tom Tancredo thinks, do you?
I feel safe in knowing that I won’t have to ask the Congressman if you speak for him.
I do not speak for Tom Tancredo. Duh. I look at where the money is coming from and who he keeps company with.
ONCE AGAIN if you have facts to refute this fine. Otherwise,
“Shut your pie hole we’re working here!”
I couldn’t care less if Tancredo gets donations from the @#$%&* Nazi party. If the money stops ILLEGAL immigration from Canada, Mexico, Spain, France, whatever, it is a good thing.
“Sorry, that dog just won’t hunt. I want ALL illegal immigration addressed.”
“I couldn’t care less if Tancredo gets donations from the @#$%&* Nazi party. If the money stops ILLEGAL immigration from Canada, Mexico, Spain, France, whatever, it is a good thing.”
Yeah, those French illegals are really a drag on our economy…
Call me when Tancredo actually *does* something about illegal immigration or the people of CO-6, cause I’d love to know.
Druid, you’re the one claiming “that’s not how Tancredo feels”. So I exposed your bull, and you’re whining again.
ZaBlanc: As I see it, Tancredo is the one that’s got single-handedly got the issue on the front pages. No else has had the spine to actually put forth a bill to address the problem – the others have been all talk.
Well, Druid has got a point, as much as people don’t want to hear it. Illegal immigration is already illegal, so rather than getting all weird about it and ensuring that there are a bunch of unvaccinated illegal alien kids running around acting as a dandy reservoir for TB, mumps, avian flu and whatever else we refuse to vaccinate them against, why not do something practical – either like actually enforcing the laws or like making other arrangements (changing the laws to something we can enforce? Taxing some of that immigrant remittance money to cover services to that community?)
Tancredo in cycle 2004 got about $2,500 directly from that guy Tanton who is from Michigan, and from Tanton’s wife, and Tancredo’s “Defend Colorado Now” initiative has gotten $5,000 recently (Dec. 19, 2005) from “U.S., Inc.” which is a sort of pass-through nonprofit also run by Tanton for redirecting money from the Scaife foundations and The Pioneer Fund; the PF definitely has eugenics in its literature (just Google ’em) — and Tanton’s own “Social Contract Press” prints a lot of stuff for the white supremacy crowd. Tancredo also gets great funding every cycle from the “US Immigration Reform PAC” – which is cleverly registered in Arlington, VA but which proudly lists “Mary Lou Tanton, President of the Board of Directors” (like, $5,000 in cycle 2004 from their PAC to Tancredo), which in turn gets funding from Tanton (yes, he’s funding his own subgrous, but he’s getting funding from even bigger fish, like the Sarah Scaife Foundation and about four others) and formerly (she passed away in 2005) directly from Cordelia May (nee Scaife).
There also seem to be many thousands per cycle from oil&gas companies and their right-leaning owners (Philip Anschutz, as one example), in addition to the aforementioned contributions from a variety of *groups* from a much smaller variety of *funders* who happen to, well, be connected to what various watchdog organizations refer to as “hate groups.” It’s looking like the money is not coming from many different initial sources but that it is funneled through a dozen groups or so to make things look more grass-rootsy and to stay under the radar. I can dig up some more specifics, Druid, but the family has had a long day and after getting the kids into bed we’ve decided we’re too tired to stay up digging any farther through Tom’s filings and who those contributors really are tonight. Sleep well, y’all.
P.S. is it true that Ex-gov Lamm is one of the “dead governors” running this site? It’s really a very informative site, you gentlemen should pat yourselves on the back for the vibrancy of political discourse here. Back on the “initiative” topic for a moment, credit where it’s due: Dick Lamm himself just gave $2,000 to the Defend Colorado Now initiative, three days after Christmas. Ho, ho ho, I knew that white beard was no put-on!
Quote of the day also comes from Dick Lamm’s oft-reprinted (summarized) speech on “How to Destroy America” – he said, “First, turn America into a bilingual or multi-lingual and bicultural country. History shows that no nation can survive the tension, conflict and antagonism of two or more competing languages and cultures.” http://www.federalobserver.com/archive.php?aid=8916 — I’m awaiting with great interest the implosion of Switzerland, which has FOUR official languages… it’s coming… any week now… http://www.eda.admin.ch/washington_emb/e/home/culedu/cultur/langua.html

It’s nice to see the open-border, advocates reduced to their only line of attack: race-baiting.
Unfortunately, it is effective. People who feel, more than they think, self-censor and even worse, knee-jerk to prove the race-baiter wrong.
Tuesday will be a fine display of the effectiveness of race-baiting. Good job Druid!
Plumber, how does suggesting that we enforce the laws we already have constitute race-baiting?
Nor does suggesting we immunize migrant children no matter how they got here constitute race-baiting — it is simple self-protection. If we deny those families basic health care, we open up our own society to infection by diseases we could have prevented getting a toehold here. Make the borders less permeable to illegals by enforcing the laws! But also recognize that some illegals will filter through anyway, and make sure they don’t contract or bring in diseases that will hit our kids and our old folks. Finally, use a remittances tax to fund that extra health care and even extra education, such as Spanish-to-English transitional classes.
If you mean Druid is “race-baiting” simply by pointing out ties between some of the prime movers of this legislation and white supremacist groups (or publishing houses), that’s really interesting. What do you think “a wave of brown-skinned people is outbreeding us. They have already destroyed California” constitutes? Very Rovian, turning the charge around and aiming it at people who object to white supremacist groups from Michigan funding our local “initiative.”
The “lie down with doggies, get up with fleas” standard does apply to all of our politicians — but to get off that, if the end justifies the means, why don’t YOU tell us why this particular piece of legislation is better than enforcing the existing laws? And while you’re at it, please tell us why it’s a good idea to refuse to vaccinate children of illegals… you think that’s going to keep the illegals in Mexico or Guatemala?
Race-baiting? Right. I am honestly concened with Congressman having associations with White Supremacists. How is this “race baiting”?
Mom,
Your critism of enforcement is well-placed. No argument here.
After all, if we enforced our borders, there’d be no illegals to immunize, medicate, hospitalize, or educate (shades of Jesse Jackson, no?). Now that we have 10-20 million illegals here, we need to be more aggresive. These criminal trespassers, and their employers, must feel unwelcome, unwanted, and persecuted at all levels of government and civil society. Otherwise, they’ll never feel like criminals.
Glad you brought up California. They will build a school every day, in perpetuity, because of mass immigration. Now the Bush Administration wants to sell off public lands. Why? To build more public schools (ostensibly).
There is very little I disagree about with the Social Contract Press, or the Tantons. I guess I’m a White Supremacist. My legal immigrant friend from Kenya will be quite amused.
Just because you, Druid, and the Southern Poverty Law Center call people racists, doesn’t necessarily make it so. In fact, I could just as easily call the SPLC a racist organization based on the same rational they use for own outrageous accusations.
Here, Mr. Tanton answers the small-minded sniping of the race-baiters.
Mom? Druid? I didn’t scare you off did I?
