As Colorado Public Radio’s Bente Birkeland reports, the first Democrat we’d consider a serious contender for the Colorado Treasurer nomination in 2026, term-limited state Rep. Brianna Titone, formally jumped in the race this morning:
Democratic State Rep. Brianna Titone of Arvada, who is term-limited at the statehouse, is running to be the next Colorado State Treasurer.
Titone currently chairs the House Joint Technology committee, is the vice chair of the Finance Committee, and sits on the Appropriations Committee. She is Colorado’s first openly transgender state lawmaker.
The former geologist was first elected to the statehouse in 2018 in a blue wave, defeating a prominent Republican in the GOP held seat in a tight race. If she succeeds in the Treasurer’s race, she hopes to make history as the country’s first openly transgender elected to a statewide executive office.
Rep. Titone made history after being uncontroversially elected four times to represent her suburban Jefferson County House district, and her record in the legislature was relatively moderate focused on such practical matters as the “right to repair” wheelchairs and later electronics and farm equipment. Although two minor Democratic candidates have already filed to run for Treasurer, watch for this race to narrow between Rep. Titone and other better-known candidates, expected to include state Sen. Jeff Bridges in the coming days.

I'm agnostic on the Treasurer's race at this point in the game, but Polsters might want to know the other 2 Dems running so far actually have chops too. Jerry DiTullio has been a treasurer twice (currently for JeffCo, a pretty large population), plus has a MBA and relevant board experience. John Mikos has a bachelor's in econ and a MBA in finance.
What an awesome embarrassment of riches to already have such competent candidates? As a Democrat in Colorado, my primary choices are usually "Good Candidate For These Reasons" vs "Good Candidate For Those Reasons".
This is quite to contrast to being a Republican in Colorado where primary choices are "Hateful, incompetent jerk who's name I've heard for too long" vs "Even more hateful, incompetent jerk who is buddies with Dave Williams".
I went looking and was reminded:
Not directly relevant to the tasks of being Treasurer, but it reminded me of where I'd seen the name.
Hello 2Jung2Die!
Thanks for the positive comments about my qualifications, experience and background as a candidate for State Treasurer. I have been an elected City Treasuer (Wheat Ridge), JeffCo Treasuer (current) and the most qualified candidate for State Treasurer.

I can't imagine being transgender and willing to be in such a spotlight such as running for a statewide office. Titone is a hero.
What are you talking about?
Titone is not a serious canidate — no experience to be treasurer whatsoever.
DiTullio on the other hand has loads of expeience.
But I guess it is the state of the loony-left Democrats in Colorado these days such that 'identifiying' as transgender trumps any other qualification.
I feel like there's more you want to say but are perhaps worried it will sound intolerant?
I think IndependentProgressive sounds intolerant enough already.
We can say "I would prefer DiTullio over Titone" without being a jerk. 2Jung2Die was able to do that easily.
Thanks chickenheed, though I hope I didn't make it sound like I'd prefer DiTullio. I was just trying to pass along info about the other 2, like 15 months in advance of a primary!
Ah. My bad.
I do appreciate the mention of the other 2 candidates though.
I swear it was mostly a reaction to the OP saying the other two were "minor candidates." Maybe that will prove to be right, maybe not, but I think it's a bit early to be saying that. DeTullio got about 150,000 votes in his last election, Titone about 30,000 (of course different sized districts). Mikos is from El Paso County, now the largest county in Colorado by population. Dave Young won his first treasurer's primary with "only" about 363,000 votes. I don't believe being a state rep sets up an automatic slam dunk in a statewide election, but Titone has decent Front Range name recognition. When it comes to Jeff Bridges, his Joint Budget Committee experience is a good thing, but this potential treasurer candidate has a bachelor's in poli sci and a master's in divinity.
To be fair, at 15 months in advance of a primary, I'm considering everyone a "minor candidate".
I think “IndependentProgressive” (IP for short) is a astroturfing alt account of a right-winger honestly. Like I mentioned in my repsonse to them, I find it odd how IP only shows up to lambast Dems and progressives and anything they do. They are also weirdly absent from posts that discuss Republican shenanigans, Dem wins, or the other candidates that have announced so far. Their rhetoric also sounds like a poorly disguised Republican pretending to sound like an edgy liberal. IP often slips up and gives the game away by saying stuff like Colorado being run by loony leftists, being somehow against mental health for kids, or being weirdly hostile to LGBT people (all favorite talking point among state GOPers).
We shouldn’t be tricked to thinking IP is being genuine. A real progressive would be focused on saving our country against the MAGA scourge, not belittling fellow progressives to trying to run for office (while ignoring that the COGOP candidates are and will be bonkers and actually unquaified). Even more reason to not trust their intentions.
Titone Actually has a pretty impressive resume. She’s been a scientist in several disciplines, including geology and microbiology, worked as a mining consultant for years. Much more of a working scientist than, say, John Hickenlooper, who ran on those credentials. She also has decent chops in information technology, so would not have difficulty with treasury IT systems.
One would think the extraction industries in Colorado would be cheering for her. I wonder why ever not?
This is part of the reason I said I was agnostic on this race right now. It's a political contest, not a straight job interview. Everyone gets a chance to tell their story, and to try proving they can run a statewide campaign. Working harder can overcome a resume. Money and connections matter.
Ms Titone doesn’t ‘identify as transgender’ – she is a woman who happens to be transgender…just as you, IndependentProgressive, don’t ‘identify as a jerk’ – it is simply part of who you are.
With that logic IP, Titone should of never tried to be a state legislator since she didn’t have a background or “relevant” expertise in political science. I think this would disqualify most people from ever being legislators in the first place.
Also, pardon me for being so blunt IP but are you actually a progressive or are you a conservative/Republican pretending to be a liberal to sow division and discretely churn propanganda to gaslight progressives to embrace ultra-conservative policies? You only show up in select posts complaining about Democrats and Left-wing policies (weird how you ignore the crazy policies that Republicans are doing though) and act like Colorado is controlled by communists. You never show up in posts covering Republicans, never show up in posts about objectively good policies passed by Dems and never show up in posts about other candidates.
I personally prefer Jerry DiTullio or Jeff Bridges (if he runs) but Titone is not exactly unqualified or unknown either so there's many good choices. Also, lets not deny the fact that Titone has a much higher profile that most state lawmakers would kill for, she's even known far outside the state. That's relevant no matter how you slice it and should be considered. Her candidacy would bring in tons of (positive) attention and a surge of voter enthusiasm. I'll happily vote for whoever makes it to the general election, all are excellent choices anyways.
