Two Spots Considered for State Dem Convention

  • by: Colorado Pols

According to Dem Notes:

I’ve received word that we have two bids for the State Convention and Assembly:  one from Broomfield Dems, the other from El Paso County Dems.  The deadline was yesterday, so the Site Selection Committee will be meeting in the weeks ahead, including site visits, in the hopes that we’ll have a recommendation for the Executive Committee by mid-June.  I haven’t seen either bid, but I know that the State Party should be well-served by either location for our 2008 State Assembly and Convention!

No word yet on where the state GOP is thinking about holding its state convention.

      1.   Most of the people were friendly. There was one fundie young man (did D.D.H.G.L.Q. ride a bicycle and have long hair back then?) who came over and couldn’t understand why a group of us gay men were not “into women.”  Eventually he frustrated talking with us and went to hit on some lesbians.  (We wished him well in that endeavor….)
It was much more rewarding participating in a pride event in the Springs than in Denver even though Denver’s events are much larger.
The state Dems should definitely hold their convention/ assembly in the Springs!

          1. but if he gave them too much grief, I fear they might have beat him up or made him listen to K.D. Lang music while watching reruns of “Ellen.”

  1. would they even CONSIDER holding it in El Paso? Just for shock value? It’d make more sense to hold the convention somewhere that it could be perceived as a show of strength, not a sneer to Republicans, especially when the National Convention is coming to town the same year and they hope to ride the “blue tide” and all.

    weird.

      1. Republicans do, but Democrats don’t. Why the hell should they? Last time they were up in Greeley, and before that they were in Pueblo, but why would they bother with Colorado Spigots? It just don’t add up to me.

        1. And there’s nothing wrong with that.  Maybe it’s a little version of Dean’s 50 state thing.  Maybe because Pike’s Peak and Garden of the Gods is so pretty  🙂

    1. Why not hold it in the Springs.  It’s not like the one-hour drive is such a big deal from Denver.  The Springs elected two democrats to the state legislature last year with 20% margins of victory, and has a really active and revitalized local party.  I’d think the state party would want to support them in whatever ways possible.

Most importantly, there’s a serious perception problem with holding the convention in a place dominated by the existing democratic party power structure.  Little things here and there, like a House speaker from the western slope and a convention in the Springs, can go a long way toward maintaining both the perception and reality that the party is interested in the whole state.  There’s already enough us versus them mentality in the state.

Are you concerned that without a local convention, democrats will have trouble winning in Denver?  Or is this just about convenience?

      1. It has been up to the counties to place bids for the site. Only Broomfield and El Paso did so. So it will be in one of those locations.

I can’t speak for the other counties, but the officers in Denver briefly discussed this and we were in agreement, with the National Convention coming, and several likely local primaries next year, we have enough on our plate.

Hosting the state assembly is a huge undertaking for a county party so I can understand why many may have shied away from it.

  2. Convention came to El Paso County, it would help reduce the Republican majority here a little.  I sure several Republicans would die of heart attacks seeing so many Democrats here in Colorado Springs

      1. As I traveled to the Springs for Jay’s campaign, I was attacked by a hawk that blew out my windshield (the blood and feathers was more than I could handle that day), had two flat tires and my Sirus Satellite does not work there.  Our Finance Director also had flat tires and car troubles.  All of this happened within one mile of Focus on the Family!!! That is truly terrifying!!
