Musgrave Heart...Udall?

  • by: Colorado Pols

As the Greeley Tribune reports:

U.S. Reps. Marilyn Musgrave, R-Fort Morgan, and Mark Udall, D-Eldorado Springs, met with six agricultural leaders in Windsor on Monday to talk about Congress’ work on the farm bill. The lawmakers mostly nodded their heads in empathy and said they would take the concerns back to Washington…

On the one hand, it’s a great thing for Marilyn Musgrave to get face time with a prominent Democrat on an issue that’s important to her constituents–events like these are shoring up her revamped “New Musgrave” bipartisan image.

On the other hand, how much friendly exposure does she want to give Democrat Senate candidate Mark Udall, right in the heart of Republican candidate Bob Schaffer’s home territory?

Could longstanding rumors about friction between Rep. Musgrave and her CD-4 predecessor Schaffer have something to do with this? There’s a question worth answering.

      1. If elected Senator he will have to attend to the concerns of rural Colorado; Musgrave has one of the largest and most diverse ag districts in the nation.  Udall also co-chaired the Amendement 37 campaign — which has caused billions of dollars to be invested in rural Colorado (particularly Logan and Weld County).  Given that issue alone, he’s been a pretty good friend to rural Colorado.

  1. A vote for Musgrave is a vote for Schaffer.  If she can keep R’s on the ranch, she helps the whole ticket.  If R’s don’t want to vote for her, they are more likely to vote for other Dem’s as well.

  2. Marilyn Musgrave gets great photos to use in her reelection campaign.

Mark Udall gets to brag about his ability to work well with Republicans. That will help persuade newspapers to support his candidacy.

This was a smart move by both. It had nothing to do with anything but the political self interest of Musgrave and Udall.

    1. Marilyn and Bob are friends.  Bob endorsed Marilyn in a crowded primary field when he retired from Congress.  There are a lot of establishment GOPers who don’t like Marilyn but are working for Bob because he’s the only game in town.  It’s the party hacks trying to be clever and take a shot at a conservative.

    2. I have a lot of ties to Weld County and the word from Republicans there is that BS does not like that MM took away all of his influence. She and her crew have been fairly successful at controling what Republicans get elected (examples: DA Ken Buck and Senator Scott Renfroe). BS is pissed that no one listens to him anymore.

      1.   D.D.H.G.L.Q. still listens to him.

BTW, any word on how much money Udall brought in last quarter?  Does B.S. have an exploratory committee allowing him to raise $$$?  If so, what was his take?

  3. Marilyn Musgrave had one opponent when she ran for Congress the first time.

All of Schaffer’s social conservative pals backed Musgrave and he had no choice.

This is simply two politicians using the other to advance their own campaign. Musgrave did not think for one second about Schaffer nor did Udall give a second thought about Markey/Paccione.
