After a few weeks of growing “unsolicited support”–which you might initially mistake for the sound of crickets, but don’t be fooled–CU Regent Tom Lucero is officially in the hunt for Rep. Betsy Markey’s CD-4 seat. As the Boulder Daily Camera reports:
University of Colorado Regent Tom Lucero announced Wednesday that he will run for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2010.
Lucero, R-Loveland, plans to run in the 4th Congressional District, a seat held by Besty Markey, a Fort Collins Democrat. Markey won a hotly contested race in November against Republican incumbent Marilyn Musgrave.
The 4th CD includes northeastern Colorado, including parts of Longmont, and most of eastern Colorado.
Lucero has been a CU Regent since 1998, and was re-elected in 2004 with 74 percent of the vote.
“I remain focused on a pro-growth agenda of limited government, economic prosperity, education excellence and energy independence for Colorado,” he said in a statement Wednesday.
He also said he has already assembled a small staff and set up a Web site, www.lucero2010.com.
This GOP primary is going to rock. Of course it will be won by somebody other than Tom Lucero, and all he’s really done here is move up the timetable for other candidates to announce, but don’t let any foregone conclusions spoil the fun.

All the talk of unsolicited support wasn’t the announcement? He had to officially announce too? He might as well have posted his concession speech while he was at it.
Meanwhile, in reality land, does Regent Lucero have to resign his CU post to run for CD-4, since his term doesn’t expire until 2011?
…the Regent post isn’t a full-time job by any stretch of the imagination. Unless there are complex fundraising issues that would undoubtedly boggle my mind.
if he can raise funds for CD-4 at the same time he’s a regent, then I’m sure he will remain in his seat when he eventually loses the primary.
A new regent will have to be elected in the November 2010 election to replace Lucero; his term technically expires when the new regent is sworn into office in early January. Any effort to run for Congress shouldn’t interfere with his current office, at least in terms of the timing of the end of one position and the beginning of another.
Once everyone learns of all the extreme, right-wing organizations Lucero is tied to, he’ll implode and implode quickly. Did the NeoCons learn anything from the last election cycle in CD-4? Voters (particularly unaffiliateds) are tired of extreme politics in their district.
Prediction: Lucero won’t be able to raise the cash his Napoleon-sized ego thinks it can raise and he’ll be toast by Labor Day, at the latest.
I know we’re talking about two peas in a pod but still. I think a lot of people in the 4th voted against Marilyn as a person and politician more so than anything else. She was really disliked that much.
A rock-ribbed conservative without Marilyn’s personal baggage will be a formidable opponent for Markey.
If he wins the primary then Betsy can spend the last 3 weeks of the general election vacationing on the East Coast (Dan Inouye did that one year).
Lucero will get his brains beat in long before Labor Day. No way he makes it out of a primary.
