Margaret Chapman to Return to Trustee Post

Former Jefferson County Trustee Margaret Chapman, who resigned last month at Governor Hickenlooper’s behest, was today reappointed to the post.

Gov. John Hickenlooper, who had asked for the resignations of 10 county public trustees last month, today gave five their jobs back. He also picked new trustees for three counties. The search continues in two more counties.

Trustees in five counties were reappointed: George Kennedy in Douglas County; Thomas Mowle in El Paso County; Margaret Chapman in Jefferson County; Deborah Morgan in Larimer County; and Susie Velasquez in Weld County.

“It is essential that public servants maintain the public’s trust,” Hickenlooper said. “We expect that moving forward each of these trustees will continue to do just that.”

The Governor’s Office intends to seek legislative changes in January that deal with issues related to the state’s public trustees. The changes will be proposed in concert with counties and members of the General Assembly. No matter what form the legislation may take, it must maintain transparency, accountability and consistency among public trustees statewide.

Chapman was widely expected to get her job back. She’s always “maintained the public’s trust” and played no part in the scandal that forced the resignation of trustees around the state. Last month, we wrote that “there’s no question that Hickenlooper will reappoint Chapman: she’s simply the best fit for the post and she’s done nothing wrong.” That clearly holds true today, and should for as long as Chapman serves the people of Jefferson County.

Still, with statutory changes to the appointed positions promised for next year’s legislative session, Chapman’s office may change dramatically. That’s a shame: for five years she’s capably performed her duties as they’re currently defined. It’s an unfortunate reality that many of Chapman’s colleagues took personal advantage of the position, but Jefferson County’s trustee patently did not.

As someone who’s shined in and truly understands the job, then, Chapman should be leading the legislative effort to rework the state’s appointed trustee system. She shouldn’t be punished by it.

Chapman Resigns as Public Trustee

In the wake of the Denver newspaper’s muckraking exploration of the budgets of Colorado’s ten appointed public trustees, Jeffco’s own Margaret Chapman has resigned her post. For Chapman, the resignation is little more than a symbolic gesture, as no misdeeds have been alleged in her office.

Jefferson County public trustee Margaret Chapman has resigned her job at  the behest of Gov. John Hickenlooper, who requested the resignations of all 10 appointed trustees July 9.

Chapman said Thursday she would reapply for her job.

The governor took action after a July 8 Denver Post story alleged that some trustees were misusing public funds; the article did not single out Chapman for criticism. Chapman, 63, a Democrat, was appointed to the job by governor Bill Ritter in 2007 and reappointed in 2011 by Hickenlooper.

The public trustee is appointed to oversee the foreclosure process on behalf of both lenders and homeowners.

The governor’s office issued a news release late Tuesday saying all 10 appointed trustees had resigned in the following counties: Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Douglas, El Paso, Jefferson, Larimer, Mesa, Pueblo and Weld.

In a county famed for its corrupt government, Chapman has always been a beacon of transparency since her appointment by Governor Ritter in 2007. So while many of her colleagues took full advantage of their lack of independent oversight, Chapman has kept her books in order and done everything above the table. That’s all the more remarkable considering how much a trustee could’ve gotten away with in Jeffco.

There’s no question that Hickenlooper will reappoint Chapman: she’s simply the best fit for the post and she’s done nothing wrong.

What’s less certain is how long she can keep her job after reappointment. The legislature will likely attempt to remedy what is an admittedly-flawed system when it meets in January, perhaps incorporating the ten appointed trustees into existing elected positions in county government.

Nothing could be worse for Jeffco. Paradoxically, moving the office under the aegis of county government would corrupt — not cleanse — the trustee. Jefferson County, after all, isn’t renowned for its transparent government practices.

Jefferson County’s Public Trustee should not only keep her job, she should also be free of county-level interference. As trustee, Margaret Chapman will never do anything ethically questionable. Shifting the job closer to county government, however, will make her eventual successor all that much more, not less, likely to take advantage of the perks of the office.  

Don Rosier’s Surprising Political Rise

Jefferson County Commissioner Don Rosier was last month selected as president of the Front Range District of Colorado Counties, an advocacy group which advises county governments across the Front Range. It’s a plum appointment for the first-term commissioner, who only took office last year after defeating incumbent Commissioner Kathy Hartman in 2010.

Jefferson County Commissioner Donald Rosier has been elected president of the Front Range District of Colorado Counties, Inc. (CCI), a group that represents boards of county commissioners from more than 60 Colorado counties.

The CCI Front Range District includes Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Douglas, El Paso, Jefferson, Larimer, and Weld counties and the City & County of Denver and City & County of Broomfield. It brings together commissioners from those counties who face similar challenges such as increasing urbanization, declining revenues and accelerating demands for services for citizens. By joining together, the commissioners share knowledge and experience, have a bigger voice on legislative matters, and work together on issues that cross county lines.

Rosier, who chairs the Jefferson County Board of County Commissioners, was sworn in as a Jeffco commissioner in 2011, and was named CCI’s Freshman Commissioner of the Year during his first year in office.

CCI is a non-profit, membership association that provides information and education to county officials, and helps counties work together.  Rosier was elected to head the Front Range group because of his work with other counties on critical issues such as transportation and economic development.

Rosier also serves on the National Association of Counties (NACo) Community and Economic Development Committee, which develops NACo policies and represents counties across the U.S. before Congress on matters related to community development and redevelopment, housing programs, building and housing codes, subdivision regulations, public works and economic development.  Recently he was chosen as one of only 23 leaders in county government from across the U.S. to participate in a national leadership institute developed by NACo and the Cambridge Leadership Associates.

Locally, Rosier represents Jefferson County on several boards including the Denver Regional Council of Governments, the Jefferson Economic Development Corporation and the Jefferson Parkway Public Highway Authority.

Rosier has quickly become the face of the Board, leading the controversial charge to complete the Denver-metropolitan beltway while still finding time to scare little kids.

He’s risen to the top of county government, however, less because of any inherent ambition or talent and more because of the power vacuum left in the wake of the Kings’ of Corruption abdications. Commissioners Jim Congrove and Kevin McCasky were so masterfully able to define — and desecrate — the Board of Commissioners because, working in tandem, they could ramrod through their policies with no questions asked. You could call it leadership, even if it was unquestionably corrupt — and occasionally bizarre.

Indeed, Rosier’s political profile has stumbled into the spotlight in part because the current Board isn’t really composed of strong personalities. Commissioner Faye Griffin, while popular, lacks the legislative chops to be anything more than a yes-woman. After decades in county government, she’s proven to be a better bureaucrat than policymaker. And while Commissioner John Odom has made some of the same mistakes as his predecessors, he’s too green — commissioner is too big for the guy who’s never successfully been elected to public office before.

And so Rosier, rocking facial hair which would make Colonel Sanders shudder, has alone been able to wield power in Jeffco. The Rosier era is doubtless an improvement over the reign of McCasky, Congrove, & company: there’s been no major corruption scandals, yet.

Still, you’ve got to wonder: is this the best we can do? Should one man really set the direction of the county as a whole? And what has Rosier accomplished, anyway?

The Taj Mahal is no longer a font of shame and outrage for Jefferson County residents. But the county government isn’t really anything to be proud of, either.

Don Rosier, then, is the rebound girlfriend of local politics: necessary to move on from past mistakes, but ultimately forgettable in the long run.  

Golden, Jeffco Duke it Out in Capitol on Beltway

The completion of a Denver-metropolitan “Beltway” has been as long of a process as it has been contentious. Opening shots were fired nearly 40 years ago, when then-Governor Dick Lamm famously vowed to drive a “silver-stake” through the heart of the project.

Since then, of course, most of the Beltway has been completed, with the exception of what has been called the “Jefferson Parkway” — a stretch of road just north of Golden that would finally, some sixty years after the project was first discussed, loop a belt around the waist of the Metro area.

Former Golden Mayor Jacob Smith was elected in 2007 in part because of his pledge to obstruct the Beltway’s completion. Golden has always opposed the construction of an arterial road so close to home, citing fears of congestion that would forever change the dynamics behind the city’s small-town charm. Negotiations on the issue between Golden, its neighbors, and the county broke down in December.

Since then, the issue has lingered over much of Golden’s relationship with Jefferson County, just as it has for the better part of the last two decades.

Lingered, that is, until last week, when a mysterious piece of legislation popped up under the Golden Dome. Fox 31’s Eli Stokols has the story:

DENVER – Legislation now being drafted to create a government board with the power to complete a toll road beltway around the metro area over the objections of local town and cities is unlikely to go anywhere during the current legislative session, which ends in a few weeks.

“This bill hasn’t even been introduced yet,” said Sen. Betty Boyd, D-Lakewood, who’s considering sponsoring the legislation if it can be introduced this year. “I haven’t even seen a draft yet, and I have some concerns of my own. So it’s not looking realistic that we can do this in a few weeks.”

But even if the legislation isn’t an imminent threat, the cities it would affect are sounding the alarm over what they perceive as a sweeping extension of the government’s ability to invoke eminent domain.

“The legislature, over the last five-to-10 years, has been limiting eminent domain,” Mike Bestor, the city manager for the City of Golden, told FOX31 Denver Monday. “And now here is this huge grab for dominant eminent domain.

“People want to build this high-speed tollway through our little valley here with no concern for the impact on the quality of life for our homeowners, for our citizens.”

What Bestor is calling a “secret attack” marks the latest impasse in a long-running battle between the city and Jefferson County over the proposed “Jefferson Parkway”, a toll road that would connect C-470 from where it ends just south of Golden north to Colo. 128 in Broomfield, essentially completing the beltway encircling the Denver metro area.

Jefferson County Commissioner — and storybook enthusiastDon Rosier is happy to take credit for this particular “secret attack,” telling KUNC:

Golden has attacked really the entire region and the state by walking away from the negotiation table. They thumbed their nose at the Governor, [and] at CDOT. They didn’t negotiate in good faith…when you look at it, they started it. I hate to say that, but in essence, I want to complete the road and do the best job possible…I do not believe the citizens of Golden have been given all the information. I don’t believe the City Manager, nor has the Mayor been transparent with them.

Rosier’s comments, of course, make this complex issue seem nothing more than a schoolyard fight. “YOU started it!” “No, YOU started it.” Is this kind of dialogue really what we expect from elected officials?  With back-and-forths like this, you have to wonder whether or not Jeffco has a little crush on the City of Golden.  

The Beltway has always really just been talk — it’s never once come close to becoming a reality. This particular piece of legislation, for example, is doomed to fail: no legislator has stepped forward to sponsor it, but even if they did, it would no doubt die an ignominious death. The Jeffco delegation would likely vote against it — except Senator Boyd, who is term-limited and has no plans for future office — and would be joined in their opposition, no doubt, by small government Republicans playing lip-service to “local control” and railing against eminent domain.

Still, you’ve got to appreciate the sheer ballsiness Jeffco is displaying in drafting this bill. Rosier’s basically saying “see what you’ve made me do, Golden?” in attempting to push this project at the state level. Indeed, the county has shown that it wants this project completed no matter what the cost. The commissioners — all Republicans, mind you — will use big government to trample small communities if they have to.

Jeffco’s unprecedented aggression in pushing the Beltway’s completion should be a major cause of concern for Golden officials. By opposing the project at every step of the process, Golden may be left having no say if and when the Beltway does come to fruition.

No Means No” is a great strategy for opposition, but it’s downright terrible for negotiation. When Jeffco finds a way to get its Parkway completed without any support from Golden, it’s pretty safe to say that Golden’s not going to get anything that it wants out of the deal.

If Jeffco continues to act so brashly, the question for Golden administrators needs to go from “How can we stop this?” to “What’s the best we can get out of this?”

At Least Try to Make Your Press Releases Unique

Since neither Rick Enstrom nor Amy Attwood had primary challengers in their races for HD-23 and HD-28, respectively, their nominations at yesterday’s county assembly were nothing more than a formality.

We don’t blame either for sending out press releases championing their respective victories, however. Symbolically, their nominations at the assembly are important in signaling the next phase of the campaign in which each will make their case for election.

Still, reading through the statements released by both Enstrom’s and Attwood’s campaigns, you’ve got to wonder just how sincere either candidate really feels — their statements are almost identical.

Let’s start with Attwood:

Amy Attwood Earns Spot on Ballot as Candidate for House District 28: Jeffco GOP Assembly Demonstrates Strong Support for Attwood Candidacy

Lakewood, CO- Jefferson County small business woman Amy Attwood, R-Lakewood, this Saturday, earned the nomination to be the GOP candidate for State House District 28 in this November’s election.

Attwood says she is humbled by the strong show of support and looks forward to officially kicking off her campaign for House District 28.

“I am running for the State House to provide a strong voice for Jefferson County families and small business owners,” Attwood said. “Working in small business, the community and caring for my own family has provided me with the experience and background that I believe will serve House District 28 well in the state legislator.”

Her experience has instilled her with the values of small business ownership, commitment to employees and their families as well as customers and the community.

“I know and love this community and am honored to have the opportunity to earn the votes of my friends and neighbors in Lakewood,” Attwood said. “I look forward to continuing my commitment to our community over the course of this campaign as I speak with voters across the district to ensure that their voices are a heard.”

Amy is married to Gavin, and together they have two sons, Max, 9 and Zak, 7.

Now, for Enstrom:

Rick Enstrom Receives Unanimous Support as Candidate for House District 23: Jeffco GOP Assembly rallies around Enstrom Candidacy

Lakewood, CO-Jefferson County businessman and Lakewood resident Rick Enstrom, on Saturday, earned the nomination to be the Republican candidate for State House District 23 in this November’s election.

Enstrom said he had long looked forward to the official beginning of his campaign as the party’s nominee, and was touched by the outpouring of support he received at the Assembly.

“After a lifetime of living in Colorado – working to create jobs, raising a family and giving back to my community, I am excited to take this next step.” Enstrom said. “Coloradans deserve a leader who will actively listen to the needs of the community and work to provide people the freedom and opportunity to pursue their goals.”

Years of working for the family business, Enstrom Candies, has equipped Rick with the skills and experience needed to make a meaningful difference in state government. His years of service as a volunteer firefighter, EMT and member of the Highland Rescue Team have instilled in him a passion and a drive for giving back to his community.

“As our state and our country confront the realities presented by the economic slowdown and the dramatic job losses of recent years, I intend to work for increased economic opportunity and growth of good careers that JeffCo families need in order to provide a bright future for their children,” Enstrom said.

Rick has strong ties to Jefferson County. A Colorado native, Rick is the father to two married sons and has three grandchildren who all live nearby in Lakewood. He is a graduate of Mesa College.  He has served on the Colorado Wildlife Commission and the board of Great Outdoors Colorado.  His passion for the outdoors earned him “Conservationist of the Year” awards from both Colorado Ducks Unlimited and Southeast Prowers NRCS.

“I’m looking forward to beginning my campaign in earnest.” Enstrom said. “Coloradans deserve a representative who will listen to their needs and that is what I intend to do over the coming months as I walk door to door in my district seeking the support of my longtime friends and neighbors.”

Rick has been married to his greatest supporter, Linda, for 36 years.

There’s nothing wrong with either of these statements. In fact, as far as press releases go, they’ve covered everything they need to cover: each candidate’s career, ties to the area, and reasons for campaigning – perfect fodder for local news.

The problem is, when read side-by-side, these releases make you wonder if they weren’t, in fact, written by the same person. They probably were, of course, or were drafted in deference to the same guidelines from above. If you’re campaigning for a local office, however, you should at least attempt to mask the fact you’re running for reasons given to you by your political party.

That’s a difficult task when all members of your political party make the same sort of statements.

Attwood and Enstrom both “earned the nomination to be the GOP candidate…in this November’s election.”

Attwood’s “years of experience working for her family construction business” sounds a lot like Enstrom’s “years of working for the family business, Enstrom’s candies.”

Enstrom’s “strong ties to Jefferson County” are also pretty similar to Attwood’s “deep roots in Jefferson County.”

Oh, don’t forget that both candidates are “looking forward” to the campaign. That’s important. Don’t overlook the last sentence in the boilerplate, either, where Enstrom talks about his wife Linda and Attwood talks about her husband Gavin.

In short, because each of these candidate’s statements are designed to showcase their deeply personal reasoning and unique qualifications for public office, it looks really bad when those same statements are nothing more than generic buzzwords adapted for each race.

Or at the very least, it’s going to make the person reading your press releases – presumably the very point of issuing a statement – either very suspicious or, more likely, very bored. Neither of those reactions lend themselves to favorable newspaper ink.  

5 of Colorado Statesman’s “Top 12 Races to Watch” are in Jeffco

The Colorado Statesman’s inimitable Ernest Luning last week gave his rundown of the top 12 tightest legislative races to watch in 2012.  

Lo and behold, nearly half of all of those races are in Jeffco.

From Luning:

It’s just four months until Colorado voters cast ballots in the June primary, and already the battle for control of the General Assembly is taking shape.

Following last year’s contentious reapportionment fight, which scrambled districts statewide and resulted in an unusually high number of competitive districts – at least as measured by voter registration statistics – both Republicans and Democrats are vying for majorities in the state House and Senate. Republicans currently hold a one-vote margin in the House, and Democrats control the Senate by five votes, but an unprecedented turnover in the chambers means those majorities could be entirely up for grabs this year.

The Colorado Statesman has compiled a list of the 12 legislative races – including a handful of primaries – to watch this year, based on interviews with party strategists, campaign operatives, candidates and neutral observers. At the end of each month up to the election, we’ll update the list to reflect changes in the ranking based on what’s sure to be a dynamic campaign year.



1. Senate District 22 – Democratic state Rep. Andy Kerr vs. Republican state Rep. Ken Summers

This is the marquee legislative race this year because it pits two solidly partisan, veteran lawmakers against each other in a quintessential swing district smack in the middle of bellwether Jefferson County. It’s also the contest that has seen the most twists and turns on the way to the final line-up, promising plenty of excitement right down to the wire. Reapportionment maps crowded state Reps. Kerr and Summers, along with Democratic state Rep. Max Tyler, into the same House district, leaving Kerr and Summers to emerge as candidates for the open Senate seat.

Rated: A pure toss-up.



3. House District 29 – Incumbent Republican state Rep. Robert Ramirez vs. Democratic challenger Tracy Kraft-Tharp

Even if this north Jefferson County district weren’t one of the most evenly divided in the state, it would still feature one of the most hotly contested races if only because of its symbolic value. This was the seat that flipped control of the House from Democrats to Republicans in 2010 when Ramirez toppled state Rep. Debbie Benefield by a mere 197 votes. Since that win, House Speaker Frank McNulty has been touting Ramirez as the linchpin for Republicans. Though he briefly flirted with a run for his Senate seat, by all appearances he’s working as hard to keep his seat as he did to win it the first time around, facing a strong challenge from lawyer Kraft-Tharp, a Democratic Party stalwart.

Rated: Pure toss-up.



6. Senate District 19 – Incumbent Democratic state Sen. Evie Hudak vs. Republican challenger Lang Sias

Republicans want this Arvada and Westminster seat in a big way, evidenced by a flurry of TV ads – yes, TV ads! – already unleashed on Hudak in an attempt to soften her up for past congressional candidate Sias. The ads went after Hudak for supporting last fall’s failed ballot initiative Proposition 103. It would have raised state taxes by $3 billion to fund education, a hot-button issue Democrats aren’t too worried will irreparably damage the former teacher, whose views on education funding are hardly a secret. On the heels of his losing primary to run against U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter, Sias brings campaign experience and the past backing of U.S. Sen. John McCain to the suburban battleground.

Rated: Hudak’s familiarity with district gives her a slight edge, but Sias could benefit from sour voter mood.



7. House District 28 – Republican Amy Attwood vs. the winner of a Democratic primary between Brian Carroll and Brittany Pettersen

By the numbers alone, this Lakewood district ought to be a safe Democratic seat, but the combination of a combative Democratic primary and a seasoned Republican candidate make the outcome less predictable. Attwood knows the district inside and out, having run a failing bid for Lakewood City Council and gotten a jump on the partisan side as an aide to state Rep. Ken Summers, who is running for an open Senate seat. She’ll have the advantage of campaigning unobstructed through June while the Democrats slog through a primary. Campaign organizer Pettersen jumped in the race last week at the urging of local Democrats who feared Carroll had burned too many bridges during his short-lived primary challenge last fall against state Rep. Andy Kerr, when Carroll ran as the first openly gay veteran to launch a bid following the repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” military rule.

Rated: Pettersen looks strong out of the gate, and if primary isn’t too bruising could hold the advantage in November.



8. House District 23 – Incumbent Democratic state Rep. Max Tyler vs. Republican challenger Rick Enstrom

Touted as a top example of Republican legislative candidate recruitment efforts this year, Enstrom’s bid to unseat Tyler could give the Democrat his first real race in the central Jefferson County district. The candy man brings a solid record of public service and mainstream GOP positions to a race Republicans hope to turn into a referendum on Tyler’s more liberal approach to government.

Rated: Leans Tyler, but Enstrom will make him work for it.

We think Luning is spot on in almost all of his analysis. The campaign between Kerr and Summers isn’t simply the most compelling in Jeffco, it’s an incredibly important indicator of Colorado’s political temperature as 2012 progresses. There’s good reason it’s the top race to watch.

We disagree, however, that the race between Kraft-Tharp and Ramirez is a toss-up. Kraft-Tharp is outraising the sitting representative, after all. Ramirez’s brief exit from the House race only bolsters the perception that Kraft-Tharp is the candidate to beat, and that perception will only lead to increased fundraising. Luning’s right that the dynamics of this race may very well change between now and November – Ramirez will no doubt receive a healthy amount of outside support from those wanting to preserve the razor-thin GOP majority in the House – but we think Kraft-Tharp is currently enjoying a definite edge. Ramirez knows it, too.

As for the House District 28 campaign, we agree that Pettersen is making the best case for the Democratic nomination right now in part because of her backing from prominent “local Democrats.” If Carroll can argue, however, that he’s learned from his past indiscretions and if he continues pulling in enough money, he’ll swiftly fill the gap. He’ll also need to demonstrate that he didn’t move into Lakewood just to run for office.

Either way, we give Attwood the advantage against either Democratic candidate. Unlike both Carroll and to a lesser extent Pettersen, Attwood is well-known in Lakewood. Yes, she lost her last campaign for Lakewood City Council, but that only gives her impetus to work that much harder for the house seat. And we suspect that many Lakewood voters wish Attwood had won her last election, given Councilman Dave Wiechman’s recent problems.  

Deeply Personal Narrative Behind Hancock’s SB-2 Support

We wrote a few weeks ago about the political implications of Denver Mayor Michael Hancock’s unconditional support of State Senator Pat Steadman’s civil unions bill, SB-2.

Above the underlying political calculus, however, is a very poignant personal anecodte.

As Colorado legislators debate the outcome of a civil unions bill, for many it may be easy to lose sight of the population it most affects (clearly excepting the legislature’s four openly gay members, one of whom sponsored the bill). For Denver’s Mayor Michael Hancock, the issue hits far closer to home.

Hancock grew up in northeast Denver with nine other brothers and sisters. One of his siblings, Robert, was gay. And at a recent LGBT meet and greet, he shared a very personal story: Robert died of AIDS in 1996.

In a video posted on Out Front Colorado, Hancock says, “I remember very clearly standing next to him… while he lay in the bed at the hospital, and talking to him. And my brother told me a couple things that I will never forget. One is, he says, Gay people are human … Treat me as a human being. And then he looked at me and he said, ‘Michael I know that you’re going to stay involved in politics. Do everything you can to continue to fight so that poor people don’t have to die of this disease, because they don’t have to’ … And two, he says, is never ever stop fighting. For us.”

The Mayor then explained in a stirring speech that even though his brother’s partner loved him, he was unable to make decisions on his behalf. “I couldn’t have loved my brother more than his partner did,” said Hancock. “And I’ll tell you something: that was my biological brother who I loved with my very being, but I could not have loved him more than that guy in the corner… and I thought it was a damn shame that he couldn’t make decisions on his behalf.”

Hancock concluded with a statement of support for Colorado passing a civil unions bill this session. “We are way overdue,” he said. “Government should not legislate who you love and who you commit your life to. And as my brother taught me, love does not recognize gender, race, or ethnicity. We can do better than that as a people.”

Denver’s first openly gay council member, Robin Kniech, told the Denver Post she appreciated the vulnerability of Hancock’s speech.

Part of what carried Michael Hancock to the Mayor’s office was his unique ability to pair his devotion to public service with an uplifting personal narrative. His recent comments on civil unions continue that tradition.

There’s a very pressing lesson behind all of this: it’s difficult to separate a lawmaker from the office that they hold. But politicians are people too. Behind most legislative decisions are stories not dissimilar to Hancock’s, stories that are sometimes lost in political chatter. Those stories matter, and in cases like Hancock’s, they often lead to public policy with personal purpose.

Some would argue that’s the very best kind.  

Cheri Jahn Town Hall this AM

State Senator Cheri Jahn’s SD-20 has picked up its fair share of new precincts coming out of redistricting – the district lost Golden and a sizable chunk of the Denver West area and picked up new constituents with Kipling as an easternmost divider and the Ken Caryl/C-470 interchange at its southernmost point.

Jahn isn’t up for re-election this cycle, as she bested now Jefferson County Commissioner John Odom in her 2010 bid. The best way for many constituents to meet their new state senator, then, will be at one of Jahn’s town halls. For those lucky few, there’s a town hall meeting starting in a couple of hours in Wheat Ridge.

Although the new district lines don’t technically become official until after this election, we’re surprised Jahn chose to stick in Wheat Ridge for this particular piece of constituent outreach. With the considerable amount of territory she’s picked up, Jahn would be smart to host her next couple of town halls outside of her comfort zone.
