Hancock Announces Transition Plan

Denver Mayor-elect Michael Hancock today announced plans for his transition process through the website DenverForward.com:

Mayor-elect Michael Hancock today announced his DenverForward transition, a community-wide invitation to unify Denver, shape the new administration, recruit great leaders and launch his plan for the first 100 days of the new administration.

With just a 40-day transition leading up to the July 18 inauguration, DenverForward will involve families, businesses and neighborhoods from across the city as the mayor-elect prepares to hit the ground running tackling Denver’s major challenges and creating new opportunities.

“My administration will be one that represents all of Denver,” Mayor-elect Hancock said. “So we want to include the entire community in the transition process to ensure our administration and the people of Denver move forward together.”

Business leader and former Denver Office of Economic Development Director John Huggins will lead DenverForward as Chair and Chief Executive Officer. Huggins was chair of Mayor John Hickenlooper’s transition committee in 2003 and Gov. Hickenlooper’s transition committee last year.

Judging from the above picture tweeted by Fox 31’s Eli Stokols, priority #1 might be locating a podium. And maybe a lawnmower.

GOP Targets JeffCo School Board?

We’ve previously discussed right-wing Jefferson County Board of Education member Laura Boggs, censured last December for her “erratic, disrespectful and inconsistent” behavior toward other board members–the first such action against a board member in the history of the district. From fighting against desperately needed grants to physically sneaking into a JeffCo teacher’s union meeting, Boggs’ brief term on the JeffCo school board has been lively to say the least. Boggs even actively campaigned on behalf of the “Bad 3” initiatives, last year’s Amendments 60, 61 and Proposition 101, after voting with the board to officially oppose them.

Having failed to gain traction for…whatever her agenda is from present fellow board members, it would appear that Boggs is calling for “Tea Party” backup. And some GOP big names.

Boggs is sponsoring a meeting at the Arvada Public Library on June 15th to discuss JeffCo school board elections in November (details follow). JeffCo’s school board will have two seats vacated by current members who are term-limited. According to the announcement, a “Tea Party”-sounding group, Revive Our American Republic (ROAR), is hosting this meeting.

ROAR is registered with the Secretary of State’s office as a nonprofit, with the filing agent listed as notorious GOP attorney John Zakhem. What we’re hearing about the JeffCo school board today is eerily similar to ambitions expressed by Republicans prior to the takeover of the Douglas County Board of Education in 2009. High profile elected Republicans like Sen. Ted Harvey joined in that battle, which ended in GOP “nonpartisan” victory–this year bearing fruit in the form of a controversial new voucher program funding private schools.

A voucher system to siphon resources from an already strapped–but still very proud–school district would face a much more uphill fight in Jefferson County, with much greater political consequences. Our first thought is that JeffCo surer than hell isn’t DougCo, and were it not for a heavy hitter like Zakhem involved, we would dismiss this as a fringy fool’s errand.

But given the history, maybe we’d better not be so dismissive…

Unfair Regulations Expected to Continue

Most of the backlash against the EPA in the early stages of 2011 has involved the Clean Air Act and their use of the act as a way to levy taxes against businesses and factories. The mandates from the EPA would be potentially harmful to the US economy, putting a hold on many of these businesses and not allowing them the proper job growth as well.

Throughout recent times, the EPA has continued to use the Clean Air Act as a vehicle to push through with a number of political stances and repeated levies of complex and expensive regulations. The EPA’s desire to regulate greenhouse gas emissions is a major debate for many members of the GOP and business leaders. They see the regulation of emissions as completely unnecessary and even worse as a major strain on business and job growth.

With the high number of taxes and regulations, it’s hard to find the end result in the actions of the EPA. It’s a wonder why they don’t focus their efforts on more pressing matters like cutting down environmentally related diseases such as asbestos exposure and mesothelioma. Asbestos removals are needed all over the country and the EPA doesn’t flex its arm fully in the abatement process. A more focused initiative on doing this would help some people from experience life threatening results, for example mesothelioma life expectancy is very severe.

Luckily, the GOP have been adamant in introducing budget proposals and acts in the early months of 2011 that are aimed at cutting down the EPA’s unneeded reign of power over businesses. A budget cut of around a third to the 2010 slate for the EPA was proposed and would do wonders to cut down on some of the power they have been wielding through taxes and regulations.

James Inhofe, a senator from Oklahoma, has even gone as far as to help the introduction of the Energy Tax Prevention Act. This would serve to put an end to the EPA’s cap and trade agenda, in turn taking away the regulations on greenhouse gas emissions. Inhofe was clear on his goal to take power away from the EPA by saying “The Energy Tax Prevention Act also imposes accountability. It takes power away from unelected bureaucrats and puts it where it belongs: in Congress, where the people can and should decide the nation’s climate change policy.” The GOP will most likely turn to Congress for help with the process of de-funding some of the EPA’s regulations. This seems to be one of the last lines of defense against the EPA.

Hopefully with the introduction of the Energy Tax Prevention Act and the current budget proposal, combined with the fight of senators like Inhofe, the reign of the EPA on business will lessen in the coming months.

Szabo Looking at Felony Charges for Mailing

UPDATE: An official complaint has been filed, which likely means that Szabo will soon be facing a criminal charge unless a plea deal is struck.

—–

(Cross-posted from Colorado Pols)

There’s a story in the main Denver newspaper today from Lynn Bartels about a woman who is unhappy that her picture was used in a negative mailer used to attack Rep. Sara Gagliardi that was sent out by Republican challenger Libby Szabo. But there’s more trouble with this mailer than just a complaint from someone who was featured without her permission, and Szabo could be facing a felony charge as a result. Can you spot the problem?

The mailer sent out by Szabo uses the State Seal of Colorado in the background, which under Colorado law is a Class 5 Felony. We can’t tell you why using the State Seal of Colorado carries such a harsh penalty, but the law is the law. The penalty for a class 5 felony is (a) a fine no less than $1,000 and a maximum of $100,000; (b) one to three years in prison; and (c) two years of mandatory parole.

In other words, somebody — Szabo, her graphic designer, her mail house, etc. — is in serious trouble here. It’s not like there’s really a good defense for this, because the proof is right there in front of you.

Frazier, Sias Both Make Ballot in CD-7

As posted over at Colorado Pols, Republicans Ryan Frazier and Lang Sias have both qualified for the ballot for the GOP nomination in CD-7, currently held by Democrat Ed Perlmutter.

Jeffco Ballot Still Incomplete

The county assemblies have already passed, but several Jefferson County races still do not have candidates running to challenge the incumbent. Republicans have done a better job of finding candidates than Democrats, although some of those running are little more than names on a ballot.

Here’s the current list of which races are still looking for a complete slate:

No Announced Republicans

  • HD-24 (Rep. Sue Schafer)
  • No Announced Democrats

  • County Assessor (Jim Everson)

  • County Sheriff (Ted Mink)

  • SD-22 (Sen. Mike Kopp)

  • HD-25 (Rep. Cheri Gerou)
  • Of all these races, HD-24, HD-25 and SD-22 are the least surprising, since all three districts have voter registration advantages that make it tough for the other Party to really compete.

CO-Sen: Yeah, Jane Norton is That Radically Right-Wing

    {Originally posted at my blog Senate Guru.}

As Senator Michael Bennet and former state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff square off for the Democratic nomination, the Republican primary appears to be a battle over who can most appeal to the furthest right-wing elements of an already hyper-conservative Republican Party.  While the Democrats are running largely centrist campaigns, despite being amid a Democratic primary, the Republican establishment pick and primary front-runner, former Lt. Gov. Jane Norton, is doing nothing to cater to a general election electorate.  Rather, Norton is joining her primary competition in far-right-wing revelry, espousing radical rhetoric and featuring a right-wing background that would make any sensible moderate shudder.  Here are some of Jane Norton’s greatest hits.

First, Jane Norton would completely eliminate the Department of Education.  Discussion of eliminating the Department of Education was a popular topic of far-right-wing conservatives during the Reagan 80’s and Gingrich early-to-mid 90’s.  One of the key traits of teabaggers has been ignorance – ignorance at the Obama Administration’s tax cuts for middle- and lower-income families, ignorance at President Obama’s birthplace and religion, and so on.  Since she’s part of a movement marked by turning ignorance into a virtue, why not eliminate the federal department committed to improving the education of Americans.

Second, after we’ve all spent the last year watching the tumultuous health care reform debates, I think we can all agree that we’re not big fans of health care lobbyists.  Well, for five years, Jane Norton was a health care lobbyist.  She lobbied for the Medical Group Management Association, first as Executive Director in their Office of Strategic Relationship, then as Director of their Office of State Government Relations.  On top of that, she subsequently lied about having been a lobbyist, given that lobbyist is one of the dirtiest words in politics nowadays.

Third, going full Palin, Jane Norton chooses not to correct misinformation spouted by supporters at her events, misinformation designed to prey on individuals’ basest instincts, fear and hate.  At a small coffee shop visit, a Norton supporter repeatedly said of President Obama, “He’s a Muslim!”  Rather than politely correct the misinformed supporter about the President’s religion (notwithstanding the fact that, to this individual, “Muslim” is tantamount to a hateful slur), Norton rather put a positive spin on it, praising the “passion around what is happening in our own country.”  Perhaps Norton doesn’t realize the mistake and actually is under the impression that President Obama is a member of the Muslim faith.  If that’s the case, perhaps Norton also believes that President Obama was actually born in Kenya.  It’d be swell if someone in the Colorado media maybe asked her.

Fourth, it sounds like Liz Cheney drafted her stump speech:

And what I believe is happening… is the fact that the rights of terrorists are more important in this administration that the lives of American citizens.

This is an ignorant and hypocritical response to the Obama Administration trying underwear bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab in criminal court rather than military tribunal.  Why is it ignorant and hypocritical?  Because the George W. Bush Administration successfully tried shoe bomber Richard Reid in criminal court rather than military tribunal.  Basically, according to Jane Norton, President Obama is siding with terrorists over Americans because he did something exactly the same as George W. Bush.  Interesting.  This ignorance and hypocrisy not too dissimilar from Norton calling on President Obama to balance the budget in his first term or not run for re-election, even though he was handed record deficits by George W. Bush (who, you might recall, was handed recorded surpluses by President Bill Clinton but squandered them).

Fifth, Jane Norton sounds like she’s supportive of either privatizing or abolishing Social Security:

With regard to Social Security, it has turned into a Ponzi scheme. The money that people pay into it should be there for when they are ready to retire.

Taken literally, that individuals’ money “should be there” waiting for them specifically when they retire, Norton seems to clearly support privatizing Social Security into personal accounts.  Taken more broadly, that Norton believes Social Security is best likened to a Ponzi scheme, an illegal and fraudulent financial structure, one could reasonably surmise that she’d be willing to rid the country of Social Security altogether.  Again, it might be helpful for a member of the Colorado media to press her on the topic.  If she wants to privatize or eliminate Social Security, perhaps Colorado’s hundreds of thousands of seniors receiving Social Security ought to know.

When all of this is assembled, it paints a picture of Jane Norton that is so far out of the political mainstream, she can no longer see it from her house.  Taken together, Jane Norton is a fear-mongering, misinformation-spreading, ignorance-championing, Social Security-privatizing former lobbyist who would be happy to weaken education, health care and the rule of law in America.  So, yeah, Jane Norton is that radically right-wing.
