Rep. Lori Saine Just Can’t Help Herself

Last month, Republican state Rep. Lori Saine was arrested at Denver International Airport after bringing a loaded 9mm semiautomatic pistol into an airport security checkpoint concealed in her purse. Saine was arrested after requesting an attorney during police questioning, and was released the next after a court appearance. After an investigation by the Boulder DA, […]

Rep. Lori Saine: Idiot With a Gun, Not Criminal With a Gun

As the Boulder Daily Camera reports, special prosecutor Stan Garnett of Boulder County has decided not to press criminal charges against Rep. Lori Saine, who was caught last week inside a Denver International Airport security checkpoint with a loaded 9mm pistol: The Boulder District Attorney’s Office has decided not to charge Colorado Rep. Lori Saine […]

ALEC: So THAT’S Where Lori Saine Was Taking Her Gun

Since the arrest earlier this week of GOP Rep. Lori Saine on allegations she brought a loaded 9mm handgun inside a security checkpoint at Denver International Airport, an unresolved detail, potentially irrelevant but still worth nailing down–where exactly was Rep. Saine traveling to with the gun she is alleged to have “knowingly” transported? Yesterday evening […]

Why Rep. Lori Saine’s Gun Goof Matters

KDVR FOX 31 reports that Rep. Lori Saine of Weld County was released late yesterday from Denver County jail on a personal recognizance bond, while the Denver DA’s office determines what charges to file after Saine walked into a security checkpoint at Denver International Airport carrying a loaded 9mm pistol: Saine “knowingly” brought the weapon […]

Let Them Eat Methane: Rep. Lori Saine’s Shameful Indifference

As the Colorado Statesman’s John Tomasic reports, the conclusion last week that an abandoned oil and gas well was responsible for a massive explosion that destroyed a recently-built home in Firestone, killing two people, hasn’t persuaded Firestone’s representative in the Colorado General Assembly, Republican Rep. Lori Saine, that any legislative action is needed: State Rep. […]

Renfroe, Harvey Introduce “More Guns In Schools Act”

Ed News Colorado:

The gun measure is Senate Bill 13-009, which would allow school boards and charter school boards to adopt policies allowing a district or school employee to carry a concealed handgun on school grounds if that person holds a valid concealed-weapons permit. The sponsors are GOP Sens. Scott Renfroe of Greeley and Ted Harvey of Highlands Ranch and freshman Rep. Lori Saine of Dacono. The bill was assigned to the Senate Judiciary Committee, not Education.

The bill isn’t expected to make it far in the Democratic-held Senate, of course, but it’s the first chance Colorado Republicans have had to carry out the recent call to action by National Rifle Association director Wayne LaPierre. In the aftermath of the recent school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, LaPierre came out for armed guards in all schools.

We’ve been wondering how the stated desire for essentially more police officers of the kind already assigned to many Colorado schools–which would necessitate funding to pay for them–was going to reconcile with the simultaneous desire by (generally speaking, anyway) the same conservatives to cut public sector funding of every kind. As you can see, this bill neatly sidesteps that problem by allowing existing school employees with concealed carry permits to bring their personal guns. No costly unionized certified public safety officers needed!

One little problem, though: as soon as you start talking about how people with guns around your kids don’t need this or that certification, you’re going to lose a lot of soccer moms.

Remember also, as we pointed out last month, that Columbine High School did have an armed police officer on campus in April of 1999, who was unable to stop the killers there. Combined with the lack of requirements other than a concealed carry permit, and this is an especially problematic solution in search of a problem. Obviously, the bill is going to die. But Democrats need to be sure in our gun-friendly state that they thoroughly explain and debunk the underlying issues behind it. This issue will always be fraught with emotion and public misconceptions, and Democrats have an obligation to take that educational challenge seriously.

Politically, the less rational this debate becomes, the worse it goes for Democrats.

Winners and Losers of the 2024 Colorado Primaries

WINNERS Campaign Fundamentals Running for elected office is hard, but it isn’t particularly complicated. You shake a lot of hands, raise a lot of money, and then use those funds to get your name and message out to potential voters. There were a lot of candidates who lost on Tuesday after failing to check some […]

The Days Of Gun-Toting Lawmakers In The Colorado Capitol Are Almost Over

As the Denver Post’s Nick Coltrain reported on Friday afternoon, Gov. Jared Polis signed a consequential piece of gun safety legislation that will result in the end of a longstanding controversial policy, or rather a loophole in policy, that allowed lawmakers and some staff at the Colorado State Capitol building to bypass the Colorado State […]

A Few More Words On Rep. Richard Holtorf’s Tragic Inability To Stop Talking

Yesterday the Colorado House debated and eventually gave initial passage to Senate Bill 24-131, a bill that would prohibit firearms in certain “sensitive spaces.” The bill’s original broad scope was pared down considerably in amendments, but one amendment along the way more or less has become the focus of debate over the entire bill: prohibiting […]

Yes, Please: Guns Out Of The State Capitol

Marianne Goodland of the Colorado Springs Gazette’s political blog reports on a surprising twist in the debate over legislation that would allow for additional areas where firearms including concealed weapons are banned across the state. Although the bill’s original scope was scaled back in amendments, a location added to the list of gun-free zones could […]
