Last Day To “Activate” Your Voter Registration

If you’re registered to vote but still haven’t received a mail-in ballot for next Tuesday’s elections, it probably means you are an “inactive” status voter–perhaps you didn’t vote in the 2010 elections, or maybe there was a problem with correspondence to your address at some point. Whatever the case may be, today is the last […]

21-Year-Old Running for Wheat Ridge City Clerk

This hasn’t exactly been the most electrifying election season Jeffco’s ever seen. Races for the top spots in Lakewood, Arvada, Wheat Ridge, and Golden are all more or less uncontested, and as a result, there’s been less focus than usual, even, for downballot races for Treasurer, Clerk, and City Council positions. Sure, candidates have begun rolling out yard signs, but voters won’t really start paying attention until ballots arrive on their doorsteps, and even then, they still probably won’t know much about those for whom they’re voting.

In Wheat Ridge, there are campaigns for City Council in three districts, a campaign for city treasurer, and a remarkably competitive campaign for city clerk. City clerk is one of those odd positions that you wouldn’t really expect to be elected; it belongs more to a bureaucratic functionary than to a politico. In Wheat Ridge, the city clerk journals all council meetings, officiates and maintains custody of all official city documents, certifies all ordinances and resolutions passed by council, publishes all notices, proceedings, and so on and so forth. It’s an administrative position.

Needless to say, it’s a position that could really mess up the entire city if occupied by the wrong person. That’s the problem with directly electing an administrator; the City of Wheat Ridge may end up with the person best able to win an election, not the person best able to coordinate all the mechanisms that keep the city going.

Cue the four — yes, four— candidates running for city clerk in Wheat Ridge this year, and you may start to worry a little bit. Leah Dozeman, Lenny Ortiz, Deanna Davia, and Maureen Keller will all be appearing on the ballot this November. None of the candidates are really remarkable, but we think that Dozeman might be the worst of the bunch.

You may have seen Leah Dozeman’s yard signs popping up around the city. We’ve heard she’s done a pretty good job at canvassing; she’s knocked the doors you need to knock in order to win, and she’s getting her name out there. The problem with Dozeman, then, isn’t that she’s running a bad campaign. The big problem with Leah Dozeman is that she’s 21 years old, and the City Clerk position would be her first job.

CO probably only state where registered voter isn’t guaranteed mail ballot after missing 1 election

(Keep after ’em, Jason! – promoted by ProgressiveCowgirl) It seems crazy that in Colorado, you won’t necessarily get a ballot in the mail, like other good and decent registered voters, if you missed voting in just one election I haven’t seen much info reported locally on how other states deal with this issue. So I […]

Pueblo County Clerk Lionized on National Television

We didn’t want this interview from Monday night’s Rachel Maddow Show (excerpt below) to escape mention. In Colorado, we have a huge number of public servants, both elected and appointed (or simply hired) who work their entire career without ever rising to any kind of prominence–certainly not a moment where something you do becomes a […]

Latinos for Education Reform’s lack of transparency, Buck Donors, 527s, Repub Strategists, and more

Last weekend I wrote a diary about Latinos for Education Reform’s ties to the pro-voucher community.  It sparked no less than four new pols names being created to defend the organization, and as of today has 72 comments.  Given the interest, and the many questions that were raised in the discussion, I thought I would […]

Boulder County Shifting Policy; Ballots Going Out To “Inactive” Voters?

That’s the word from John Fryar of the Longmont Times-Call: The Boulder County Clerk and Recorder’s Office on Tuesday will mail ballots to more than 145,800 active voters. Then, either later this week or early next week, Boulder County may send ballots to about 24,600 other registered voters in the “inactive/failed-to-vote” category because they failed […]

Veterans Group Condemns El Paso County “Inactive” Ballot Policy

Excerpt from a press release from VoteVets.org a short while ago, opening a new front in the battle over mailing ballots to registered voters in Colorado marked “inactive” due to failure to vote in 2010–against a county clerk not involved in litigation, for withholding ballots from “inactive” military voters. As you know, that’s the status […]

“Race Card?” Who’s Really Playing Games With Voters?

(Rep. Crisanta Duran represents Colorado House District 5 – promoted by Colorado Pols) Playing the race card? Secretary of State Scott Gessler recently stated that he was “disappointed that some have played the race card” in response to his decision to sue Denver’s Clerk and Recorder Debra Johnson for mailing ballots to legally registered voters […]

Intermittent Outages Plaguing GoVoteColorado.com?

TUESDAY UPDATE #2: FOX 31’s Eli Stokols: Republican Secretary of State Scott Gessler and his staff dismissed speculation from Democratic groups that technical problems Monday on the state’s voter registration website were intentional… “There were some intermittent issues, but we got to it as quickly as we could,” said Rich Coolidge, Gessler’s spokesman. “We monitor […]

Policy wonking through Mail Ballot Elections statutes

This mess that Secretary of State Scott Gessler has stirred up has me interested in how Colorado should deal with mail ballots. I don’t have a background in law or politics, but I do have a background in computer programming and computers can ONLY do what you tell them to do, not what you meant […]
