Gigi Dennis Won't Run, Backs Coffman

  • by: Colorado Pols

From the Associated Press:

Secretary of State Gigi Dennis said today she will not run for a full term in November and endorsed Republican State Treasurer Mike Coffman for the job. Dennis, appointed by GOP Gov. Bill Owens in August after her predecessor resigned, said she wants to focus on bringing the office into compliance with new federal election laws.

Dennis replaced Donetta Davidson, who resigned to become a member of the federal Election Assistance Commission. Davidsons unfinished term ends early next year. Coffman, who is on leave from the treasurers job while serving in Iraq with the Marines, has already said he will run for the secretary of states job.

This is certainly a surprise, and it may indicate that Dennis is in line for something else (perhaps Bob Beauprez’s Lt. Governor?) Dennis gave up a $108,000 federal job to take the $68,500 Secretary of State appointment, and she was long thought to want to run for a full term in 2006. Avoiding a Republican Primary was also important after Ken Gordon made an impressive entry into the race on the Democratic side.

  1. Yeah, that seems pretty obvious.  Which would make sense, Owens elevates Gigi’s status and name ID and now she looks like someone who took one for the team by not running.  It puts her in a great position to run for LtGov.

Hmm, and I always assumed L. Hefley was going to be the choice.

  2. Donetta Davidson, Gigi Dennis, Mike Coffman.  Why would anyone vote for a Republican?  They never finish the term you elect them for anyway.

  3. Gigi would be a great pick for Lt Governor. She is well thought of in Southern Colorado amongst Republicans, Dems, and Independents. I think it would be good to have a female on the ticket to  challenge Ritter. Beauprez would be a fool not to pick her.

  4. “Donetta Davidson, Gigi Dennis, Mike Coffman. Why would anyone vote for a Republican? They never finish the term you elect them for anyway.”
Great timing, Beaupreznit.  You take this cheap shot on the very day that Deanna Hanna resigns!
    LOL!

  5. Good thing about Hanna.  She did wrong, and the Democratic legislature began an investigation and wouldn’t let her wriggle out.

Davidson, Dennis, and Coffman all bailed on their full terms in order to advance their personal careers.

I am a bit sympathetic.  There aren’t that many electable Republicans in this state any more, so they obviously must be deployed strategically.

  6. SLVGOP, tapping GIGI would also ensure a woman lt. gov, since Lola and Barbara also are bereft of Y chromosones.  But I’ve been assuming BB would pick Iron Mike, at least if the iron one agrees to stop using that “draft-dodger Bob” line.;-)

  7. Any one who thinks that Mike Coffman left the Treasury to further his political career is absolutely wrong. Major Mike Coffman went to the most dangerous place in the world to serve his country and to foster democracy. His decision was that simple. I would like to see someone challenge those motives. Maybe Jay Bennish.

  8. As usual, you’re full of crap, Beaupreznit.  Dennis didn’t bail out of anything, she will serve out the term she was appointed to fill.  And if you think Coffman went to Iraq to advance his personal career, that is a despicable claim.  I assume you also think Joe Rice, who just got back from his own tour in Iraq, his second, is a similar opportunist and you won’t support his bid as a Democrat running for Stengel’s house seat?  Or are you a pick of crap hypocrite who will support Rice because he’s in your party and vilify Hoffman because he’s not?  I guess to ask the question is to answer it.
Coffman actually will go back to his treasurer’s job when he gets back.  So the only ones bailing out are Donetta and Hanna – one to serve a federal post and one in disgrace.  You blew it, b-nit, and your attempt to cover your butt for your ignorant comments blew it big time.  So stop digging your hole deeper and either apologize or at least shut up.

  9. Colorado voters put their trust in Mike Coffman when they elected him to serve as Treasurer.  Coffman had been retired from the military for 11 years, but chose to resign in order to be a Civil Affairs Major.  While I admire his conviction, we citizens didn’t vote for him to leave the state and do other work.  And when he returns, he’ll run for a higher office.

You’re right of course that Gigi Dennis hasn’t quit early.  It will be hard for her to run the office while also campaigning for Bob Beauprez, though.

Joe Rice I met once in 2000, and he’s not my kind of politician at all.  I don’t think resigning as Mayor of tiny Glendale breaks trust on as large a scale as running away from a statewide office, but otherwise the two situations are very similar.  I wouldn’t have supported Rice regardless, but as you pointed out, I am consistent and do think he was opportunistic.

    Thanks for your kind words.

  10. You’re consistently an idiot, I’ll give you that!
By the way, Rice didn’t resign as mayor of Glendale this time…that was for his first tour.  He was working for CDOt when he went back, and resigned from that post, even though he could have taken military leave.  I honor his decision.
You must really hate the military a lot if you won’t support Maj. Joe, a fellow Democrat, in a race against a probable right-wing Republican in Stengel’s District 38.  With Riesberg and Green at risk and Ken Chlouber running for Gary’s Lindstrom’s old seat, Democratic control of the House could well rest on Rice’s shoulders.  Fortunately for the Democrats, Andrew Romanoff doesn’t share your anti-military bias and will back Rice to the hilt.  I might add that Rice fought hard to win passage of FasTracks and if he’s not “your kind of politician at all,” you must be a whack job of Sir Robin’s scope.  As one who has served his country in uniform, an inconvenience you apparently avoided at all costs, I thank God for citizen soldiers who are willing to Stand up for America.

  11. Thanks folks for the vote of confidence, but I’m holding out for the Colonel Governor or better yet the General Governor position.

… and I am not Marc Holtzman. My name is George. I’m married to Laura. My dog is named Barney and although people say I’ve been spying on Americans, I’m really just listening because as your President… I care.

    Don’t you people pay attention?

  12. Today showed a difference between a true lady(Gigi) and a desperate housewife(Deanna).  Gigi is putting the people of Colorado ahead of party politics.  Deanna has, well, left the building.

  13. Yeessh, Mr. President.  They want to move you from the oval office to a crappy mansion on 8th Avenue?  Hell, even my humble abode at the Naval Observatory is better than that.  Oh, and thank Laura for the lasagna recipe.  Lynn loves it!
    Your loyal veep,
    Dick Cheney
