Yesterday on the Caplis and Silverman radio show, Denver Mayor and Democratic candidate for Governor John Hickenlooper came on the air to answer questions about why he is refusing to disclose the recipients of $2.8 million in charitable contributions over the past 20-ish years.
Hickenlooper’s arguments were, to put it gently, strained, in the face of surgical questioning by attorneys Dan Caplis and Craig Silverman, and raise more questions than answers.

Just asking.
Candidate X claims he gives lots of money to charity. Turns out he didn’t give a dime and then makes some bogus elk meat story on top of a couple of other lies. He can’t and won’t furnish a shred of proof because he is caught red handed being the STINGY FREAKING LIAR THAT WE ALL KNOW HE IS ! – NO STORY/NOTHING TO SEE HERE
Candidate Y gives 2.8 MILLION dollars to charity, shows proof of donations but refuses to disclose recipients because out of basic decency he thinks maybe the recipients wouldn’t like the attention – HUGE MASSIVE STORY – THERE MUST BE SOME SORT OF COVER UP. LETS CALL IT HICKENGATE OR SOMETHING.
Weak, and pretty sad attempt at cleanup.
$2.8 million and you’re giving him a hard time?
Next thing you know, Republicans will be questioning the patriotism of soldiers who lost their legs in war.
Oh wait…
Please, oh please, keep talking. That was very rude what Pols said. Once you get to China you’ll be back on this side of the globe in no time.
They sent him over here to try and clean up.
Since when did it become important to demand to know the names of charities that politicians donate to?
McInnis has come under fire because he has said he gave a lot to charities, but there’s no evidence of that being true. The issue for him has been about covering up his own silly lie. Until he brought it up, it’s not like anyone was asking McInnis — or anyone — which charities received his checks. McInnis is creating his own problems here.
And from a purely strategic standpoint, why on earth would you want to keep mentioning that Hickenlooper gave $2.8 million to charity? That makes Hick look good — it doesn’t hurt him. You’re fighting fire with toothpicks here.
That may be one of those “wedge” charities.
Pints for Prostates probably wouldn’t raise too many eyebrows.
was Planned Parenthood. The Republicans would go bonkers over it and it could irk some independents and Dems as well.
I wonder if McInnis’ elk was a roadkill.
Was that he donated to some groups that the Dem base wouldn’t like. What’s probably the case is with that much money, almost everyone will see 1 or 2 that are not their favorites.
But I figure, if someone is handing out 2.8 fucking million dollars to charities, the only proper response is thank you very much.
It’s not something one can easily spin negatively in a governor’s race, I’d imagine.
the most pathetic part of all is that they are even trying to spin this. When you have absolutely nothing I guess its something to do.
I’m not sure, Fidel. If one is going to brag about millions of dollars in donations, one should probably be prepared to disclose where it went.
I say that as a Hick supporter.
McInnis was.
[I’m always willing to let someone else supply the punch line of the joke. Perfect straight man, I am.]
Why wouldn’t they take the scalpel to Scooter?
$2.8 million to charity is bad. Refusing to release tax returns is good.
Why don’t Republicans have any decent candidates for anything? This should have been McInnis’ race to lose, but he’s doing everything in his power to give 2010 to the Dems.
Don’t tell them – they think they’re doing an effective job.
Ross – don’t listen to RSB, he’s a Dem and trying to fool you.
National generic ballots don’t mean shit unless you have a decent candidate to run.
about the biggest complaint about the Democratic candidate for Governor being that he gave $2.8 million to charity.
