Wow. No one in this voluble crowd had anything to say about the Amendment 44 debate when ColoradoPols posted it as part of a thread:
I see that the “con” side to Amendment 44 maintains that the initiative sends the “wrong message to kids.”
How refreshing then to read the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s endorsement of the bid to legalize an ounce of marijuana in Nevada: “Opponents argue passionately that the initiative sends the wrong message to children. But arguing that in order to protect kids we must limit the rights of adults to make their own personal choices is to advocate the creation of an infantocracy and a return to alcohol Prohibition. In fact, many of this nation’s drug policies have long been expensive failures.”
I’ll be curious to read what the Denver Post eventually opines on Amendment 44 here in Colorado. The Rocky Mountain News has already spoken in favor of the existing “Nanny State.”

Has the War Against Marijuana been won yet? You’d think victory was pretty darn close according to this Denver Post headline from August 6, 1937:
“COLORADO DEPARTMENT WAGING WINNING FIGHT AGAINST MARIJUANA
New Agency Battles to Destory Narcotic That Leads to Eventual Insanity After Making Beasts of its Victims.”
Of course the discourse of the opponents to Amendment 44 hasn’t changed much from those glory days of reefer madness.
In an age where everyone accuses the press of a bias when it doesn’t report things according to their worldview, looking at how the papers reported on stuff in the pre-Murrow era is refreshing.
I remember seeing some old Posts, also from the 30s, and their tone was incredible. I particularly remember a photo of about 5 or 6 juviniles (they were all under 20 at any rate) who had committed a violent bank robbery who were going to executed and one of the lines in the caption said that they all “deserved” it. It may have been true but I was still taken aback that this was being stated in the context of reporting the news as opposed to commenting on it.
