When will Hefley…oh wait, who cares?!
This is pretty funny, McCain is pissed at Obama.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/02/07/mccain.obama/index.html
It would be funny if McCain wasn’t apparently making it up out of whole cloth. I am beginning to think that McCain fooled a lot of people in this country (myself included) into thinking he’s more altruistic than he is. Even on torture, where I know he has an interest, he made not nearly enough fuss over the President’s signing statement effectively nullifying his bill.
McCain’s whining in this case over Obama’s supposed commitment to McCain’s half-a**ed joint study committee on Congressional reform is the latest slide down the slippery slope away from that image of maverick integrity.
Obama’s response (in part):
As you will recall, I told everyone present at the meeting that my caucus insisted that the consideration of any ethics reform proposal go through the regular committee process. You didn’t indicate any opposition to this position at the time, and I wrote the letter to reiterate this point, as well as the fact that I thought S. 2180 should be the basis for a bipartisan solution.
I confess that I have no idea what has prompted your response. But let me assure you that I am not interested in typical partisan rhetoric or posturing. The fact that you have now questioned my sincerity and my desire to put aside politics for the public interest is regrettable but does not in any way diminish my deep respect for you nor my willingness to find a bipartisan solution to this problem.
Gimme a break – McCain doesn’t just fly off a handle for no reason – it’s completely out of charcter for him. Obama can plead ignorant all he wants but it seems pretty clear he made a deal with McCain and then renegged on it under pressure from Reid.

Day 2 of “Will Alice Run?”
Stay linked to this blog for further details and breaking news….as Colorado waits…. while Alice considers her run for the nomination…
McCain isn’t what I used to see him as, sadly. And in this case, my guess is McCain is the one doing the biddings of others. The issue is Congressional reform, and the problem is – this time around – a Republican one. McCain has shown repeatedly a willingness to take bullets for his party that are against his own interests, and in this issue especially, the GOP needs to gain even the appearance of control or risk losing its majority.
Speaking of issues the GOP needs to gain control over, has anyone else seen the growing list of bloopers from AG Gonzales’ statements yesterday?
1) Leaking information about wiretapping is bad, because the terrorist would otherwise “forget” that they might be wiretapped.
2) President Washington, President Lincoln, President Wilson, President Roosevelt have all authorized electronic surveillance on a far broader scale.
I know a retired General who used to work in the Pentagon. He said John McCain was known for flying off the handle. Even so, my guess is there was a misunderstanding. I can’t see McCain attacking Obama for no reason, conversely, Obama doesn’t seem like the type to stab someone in the back. I was most impressed with the respect Barack showed people who came before his committee. While most Senators were trying to thrash whoever was being interviewed to impress their base, Barack calmly asked good questions but never acted like an ass. Senators from both parties should take his lead and treat people with respect.
Vince Carroll has an interesting column today – wherein he tells the story of one Gwyn Green, D-23, and her attempt at repealing the laws of economics in her House Bill 1251.

Becky, I’m not sure a senator who DOESN’T act like an ass really belongs in that August body. I call it an August body because August is a month with a lot of hot air. But I agree with you, may Obama’s (and McCain’s) tribe increase.
Legislators should be required to take a course in economics prior to service. $10,000 a day fines? Geez! Let’s just ask for the business’ keys and have state owned businesses instead. Hell, let’s do away with free market competition and Capitalism entirely.
Someone stop me, I’m on the verge of a rant…..

LOL, you could be right Voyageur, but when I see some pompous Senator grilling someone, talking down to them, and calling them liars, I start fantasizing about term limits. I think it takes a real statesman to ignore all the butt kissing and adulation afforded to Senators and remain respectful of others. How they treat people shows their true character.
