Colorado’s newest round of statewide elected officials are set to be sworn-in on Tuesday, January 9, but Secretary of State-elect Mike Coffman may be planning his own private party.
Everyone from Democrat Bill Ritter (governor) to Republican John Suthers (attorney general) are normally sworn-in at the same time in a ceremony overseen by Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Mary Mullarkey. But Coffman apparently doesn’t want to share the stage, and he has asked Colorado Supreme Court Justice Allison Eid to swear him in during a separate ceremony (Eid’s husband, Troy, is the U.S. Attorney for Colorado) that may even be held the same time as the bigger shindig.
If he does indeed hold his own inauguration, Coffman is making a big mistake even before he begins his term as secretary of state. Trying to upstage everyone else, including the new governor, with his own ceremony will make Coffman look like an ass – no matter what spin he tries to place on it.

he wants to get sworn in on the Koran!
Pompous is as pompous does…
regardless of the reason.
I thought Coffman had more sense.
This just continues the trend. I hope his dealings as secretary of state are more transparent to the public than his inauguration will be.
Maybe he thought the price of admission was too much, not that all govt employees have to buy tickets to be in compliance with 41.
One of his minions held a couple of meetings with the SOS support staff and basically acted like a jerk. Then he managed to provoke a confrontation with at least one of the county clerks. This is before they take office. Several key employees have told me they intend to leave ASAP. Donetta had them spoiled. Next will be a confrontation over the no dogs rule in the building SOS is in now.
Bad idea or not, I’m going to support him. He’s one of the few “statewide” leaders we have. Thanks Mike for creating something special for Republicans to attend this season. Besides, it will be nice to see what the new Republican State Party Chair (Wadhams) has to say about leading the R’s to victory in two years. Keep up the good work!
SOS staff “shmaff”, in this day and age they better be fortunate to even have a job. Of course there will be changes. It’s called “to the victor go the spoils”.
If Mike makes this a celebration for Republicans instead of a slap at Ritter then I’ll be there too.
I think this is totally a time to pay off some campaign debt, regroup, and set a stage for Wadhams. I don’t think this is a slap to Ritter at all. Mike has said he will participate in the swearing in with Ritter.
…that it was going to be all about taking a slap at Ritter. I mean come on, the guy picked Norma Anderson as his token GOPer.
I say Mike can slap away all he wants.
“Much Ado About Nothing” category.
I love Chinese food and 8 courses of it would be pure nirvana, even if it is with Coffman.
travels through the tummy…
Your remind me of a friend in DC who, while working on the Hill, would cruise the Dirksen/Hart buildings for receptions – didn’t matter if the receptions were D or R, just free food and drink.
I’ve been known to crash D headquarters on election night. Sometimes they have better food.
