Yesterday’s Denver Post profiled young Republican lawmakers at the State Capitol, with one strange comparison:
Leading much of the opposition – and some compromise – on tough issues this year has been a group of young Republicans that some have likened to the early ’80s legislative crew of former Gov. Bill Owens, U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard, former U.S. Rep. Scott McInnis and former U.S. Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell.
So while the Republican bench has been a bit shallow recently, party leaders see a bright future for some of its 30-something lawmakers: Sen. Josh Penry of Fruita and Reps. Cory Gardner of Yuma, Rob Witwer of Golden and Frank McNulty of Highlands Ranch.
“You can definitely see senators, governors and congressman in this group of young legislators,” says Colorado GOP chairman Dick Wadhams.
Are Penry, Witwer and the bunch just like a young Ben “Nighthorse” Campbell? If they are, they’ll soon be Democrats. Campbell wasn’t a Republican when he was in the legislature.

Campbell was not a Republican until he was in the US Senate. When he was n the legislature and in Congress he was a Dem.
Not only was he a Dem (until it became uncomfortable to be one because the Rs took control) he was a Dem as long as it suited him. He became an R when it was more convenient.
The reality is, Ben was always an opportunist, and only made decision about his party affiliation based on what was in it for him.
Ben “Change Horses in the Middle of the Stream” Campbell.
He is at best one quarter Cherokee, and that is not established. He may or may not be Native American, but it is not clearly established. It has become very convenient for his political career and his jewelry business.
The real question has to be to those who are really entitled, do you care about making sure the Nighthorse gets is BS at your expense. He doesn’t care.
I believe he’s 1/2 Portugese and 3/8 Native American.
And 100% “What’s in it for me?”
BNHC must have pissed off a lot of people. He certainly isn’t popular here….
and his mother dressed him funny.
What do you want? The tribe found him to be “established” enough to declare him a member, as far as I remember. So I think that answers your last question (assuming I understand it). Under federal law, the tribes have the final say on who is a member thereof. What does he have to do to be “Indian” enough for you?
I actually thought he was Ute, but then I obviously don’t give it much thought at all.
comparing someone to Ben Switch horse is hardly a compliment-btw did Ben ever repay the dems for the money they spent to get his sorry ass elected?
In addition to his political reputation, BNHC is also known for his jewelry design. Maybe the story was meant to highlight those similarities. I hear Sen. Penry can throw a mean piece of pottery, Rep. Gardner is a master basket weaver, and don’t even get me started on Rep. Witwer’s mad skills with watercolors.
What’s your affinity for bayous?
My family ancestral estate is on one in Florida.
Penry, Gardner, Witwer, & McNulty all have one thing in common. They are very decent people. I agree with Wadhams that it is easy to could imagine them as leaders of tomorrow. They are all very conservative, but I believe that they all could work well with Democrats and Republicans alike.
MOI If I were Campbell I’d think the Wad worthy of an ass kicking for trying to compare me to the likes of a wingnut like Penry. The Republicans must be getting desperate in having to scrape the bottom of the bucket to tout Penry. Decent people? Funny! Forget for a moment that Penry is in it for his own vanity. Penry, thinking himself a junior Tony Soprano, lost his hometown newspaper endorsement when he leaned on a young reporter in an attempt to intimidate him. The Sentinel recently ran an editorial saying that Penry may be moving away from his extremist ideology. I don’t by it for a minute. Just because he is coming to the Dems with his hat in his hand does not mean the snake has morphed into a butterfly. If Penry is all the Republicans have, they are in dire straits indeed.
