Republican Crisis in Creativity

This notice ran yesterday in the local daily. The Republican minority won’t be roasting the Democrats in the Colorado Legislature. It is a sad end to a lighthearted tradition.

I can only attribute it to a crisis in creativity.

HUMMERS BUMMER

“Hummers,” where the minority party parodies the majority party in the House in skits and songs, won’t be happening this year on the last day of the session. The minority GOP nixed coming up with a show after stinging criticism of last year’s effort, where even fellow Republicans thought their effort bombed, in part because it was so mean-spirited. Over the years, lawmakers have howled over Hummers skits, including this memorable moment in 2001: For the rest of the story click the link below

Rocky Mountain News

Back in the day when Democrats were the minority in the Legislature, creating and practicing the “Saturday Night Live” type skits was an event to look forward to with great anticipation. The opportunity to lampoon and roast the majority helped to lighten the load and brighten the mood.

This was truly an event to look forward to
Every year, on the last day of the legislative session, huge crowds would pack into to the House Gallery on the third floor of the Capitol Building. The bench seating along the walls of the House would be packed in with legislative staffers from all over the campus, with standing room only along the back wall. Folding chairs would be placed next to the Representatives official seats, and members of the Senate would fill them.

Then, the light-hearted frivolity would begin. Minority party legislators would each take the part of one of the Majority party legislators and poke fun at some of their quirks and characteristics. If one of the Majority members could always be counted upon to run to the Well of the House with a grand pontification, then that characteristic would be exaggerated and played out with creative and hysterical panache.

One favorite Republican target was always Debbie Stafford, whose multiple pre-legislative employments always gave rise to her statements from the Well which always began with, “When I was a (name the profession here)…” This gave the Democrats much beloved material to exaggerate. Someone would dress as Debbie and the imitator, would seek out every opportunity throughout the skits, to run to the Well and say “When I was a MORTICIAN”…. or interject “When I was a Long Shore-man”… or proclaim, “When I was an Alien from Moon Base Alpha…” Then the crowd would roar with glee! Representative Stafford took it all in fun, and could be found enjoying it much in deed!

Representative Stafford returned the favor when she found herself in the minority four years ago and was the grand hit of the Hummers!

The diminutive red-haired, Representative Debbie Stafford donned the dark garb of British Game Show host, Anne Robinson, and recreated The Weakest Link to the delight of all! Other of her Minority Party comrades played members of the Democrat Majority , playing upon their known quirks and foibles. To the delight of all, Rep. Stafford would then pronounce, “you are the weakest link. goodbye!”

  It was awesome!

Sadly now, those days are now gone. The grim, and often vicious, Minority Republicans, have no creative juices left, and are just not in the mood to poke fun. What a sad, sad end to an honored and much beloved tradition!

    1. According to the leftist online rag, ColoradoPols, the evil Republicans take socialism to seriously to joke about it.  I guess it’s because socialism is totalitarianism and slavery.

Not me though.  I think slavery is funny.  I get giddy with delight at the sight of the government selling off some tax-evading schlub’s meager possessions.  It’s even more funny when the bureaucrats make the tax cheat’n loser wear an orange jumpsuit and shackles.  I mean, we need that tax revenue to save the children.  Anybody who’d not pay taxes hates children and should burn in hell.  Heehee, just the thought of the children haters burning in hell is making my sides hurt.

You are so right Ari and CP, liberals are definately more funny than conservatives.  In fact, I laugh at them all the time.

BTW, I don’t know if you are a modern liberal, but Aristotle was definately not a modern liberal.

        1. Modern liberalism (socialism) exists as does classical (19th Century) liberalism.

The real Aristotle was concerned with fundamental truths.  Most of these truths haven’t changed one iota from when they were written.  There is nothing further from the truth than modern liberalism, and nothing closer to the truth than classical liberalism.

That’s what makes modern liberals soooo funny.

            1. I can’t tell ’em apart. They all seem intelligent, thoughtful and statesmanlike. (As do you, typically.)

So is your real name Aristotle, or were you going for an Onassis/Jackie-O connection? Or is there some other noteworthy Aristotle out there that I’m forgetting?

              1. since you asked (and called me statemanlike, LOL – you should meet me in person and see if you still feel that way) my handle is after the philosopher but it’s not because I think I’m so wise, or that I subscribe to Aristotle’s philosophies (I suspect that I do but I’ve never read his works). No, it’s because there used to be a jackass posting here under the name “Socrates” and he used to post stuff that wasn’t thought out at all. I thought that was ironic so I decided to change my handle to Aristotle just to bug him. (The same guy used to post as “quixote” as well. He dropped off all of a sudden last June, a few weeks before Pols went to a login system. And for some reason I’ve encountered other conservative posters using the Socrates handle on other blogs. They’re not the same person.) I kept the name because I’d used it enough that people knew who I was, but it is descriptive of me in that my approach to politics is more philosophical and not wonky. I probably should have changed my handle to “Utilitarian” or “Jeremy Bentham” but it’s fun to be called Aristotle.

                1. Nobody would have got it. They’d just considered you pretensious for not going by “Jerry.”

Anyway, statesman or not, you’re always one of the more thoughtful writers in Coloradopols. Unlike certain tiresome one-note-Johnnys I could name (mea culpa).

      1. No sense of humor. Instead dark, menacing “socialism = totalitarian slavery” (= Hillary Clinton, of course) gibberish.

Remember the short-lived effort by FOX News to do a right-wing version of “The Daily Show”? It bombed.

Maybe once the Republicans have been out of power for a while, they can regain their sense of balance – and humor.

        1. Because it makes fun of both sides.  I also like the Cobert report.  I’m a republican, but I wouldn’t watch a show that only made fun of Dems.  Comedy shouldn’t be partisan.  Everything else is, let’s have one thing that’s not.

    1. And invite those sourpuss Republicans to come to the show.

Ronald Reagan was a genius at self-deprecating humor, and gentle jabs at his opponents. His current would-be heirs have totally forgotten that.

Can you imagine someone like John Andrews ever cracking a joke? (Hell, cracking a smile for that matter.)

  1. last year’s Hummers were pretty bad, not that funny and mean spirited. I’m all for dry humor and satire, but last year was over the top.
