At least not in the traditional sense. According to Steven Waldman on beliefnet.com, “Falwell changed the role of religion in U.S. history because he concluded that his own theological ancestors were wrong.”
Up until the 1970s, most Baptists and other mainstream evangelicals believed firmly in the separation of church and state. It was not until Falwell and his ilk turned their back on traditional Baptist theology that the Southern Baptist Convention became a wholly-owned subsidary of the Republican party.
