"Folksy" Wayne Allard Stumps for Mitt Romney

  • by: Colorado Pols

As the Rocky Mountain News’ Marty Sprenglemeyer reports from Iowa:

In the basement of a riverfront restaurant here Sunday evening, a Colorado Republican not named Tom Tancredo hopped on the presidential campaign trail.

He was retiring Sen. Wayne Allard, who met with a handful of attentive Davenport-area Republican activists over the dinner table to kick off a few days of stumping in eastern Iowa for his favorite GOP contender, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

But instead of playing Washington insider, Allard spent most of his time wearing his “country veterinarian” persona, going from person to person around the table and asking them to tell him about their family pets.

Later, Allard let us in on the secret to his political success all these years.

“You can talk about people’s dogs without offending anybody, as a general rule,” Allard said…

With his down-home charm and folksy demeanor, Allard convinced dinner-goers like Brock Earnhardt, 62, a utility company executive from Davenport, that there might be a softer side to the more intense Romney.

“Sen. Allard is pretty low-key,” Earnhardt said. “For me, he puts a different perspective on Mitt Romney, who is high energy. The fact that Sen. Allard is so comfortable with Mitt Romney lets me know Mitt Romney must relax from time to time.”

  1. well that is certainly refreshing, I’m glad to know that Mitt Romney can “relax.”

Seriously, this is the evaluation of a very serious Iowa primary voter – Mitt can relax and this is good. Do you want to have a beer with him too Brock? Oh and how’d that analysis work out for you last time?

Why this country places so much power in these two states baffles me.

  2. might not be the best one to work for drumming up Romney support.  Not after so much coverage of the strapping of the family dog to the car roof for a 12 hour road trip, so terrifying the poor thing, both dog and vehicle required a serious hosing down.  Oh, and it also violated his own state’s law.

        1. but I read that the dog was in a carrier (not strapped to the friggin’ roof) with a windscreen. But hey, far be it for PETA to distort the issue.  That lady Ingrid Newkirk is a NAZI.

          1. of home-rigged carrier set up of straps and some kind of windshield-like protection, as I understand it.  It may be an old story but recently went high profile with big time new coverage. And it did violate state law.  You’re right, Fidel. It may not be a biggie story-wise.  Just sayin’ it’s ironic that Allard was trying to use the pet friendly approach in the immediate wake of the new to most Mitt’s-doggie-crapping-himself-and-the-car-in-terror story.

        2. http://www.time.com/

Romney strapped a dog carrier — with the family dog Seamus, an Irish Setter, in it — to the roof of the family station wagon for a twelve hour drive from Boston to Ontario, which the family apparently completed, despite Seamus’s rather visceral protest.

I wonder if his kids acted up if he threatened to stuff them up on the roof with ol’ Seamus.

    1. So, I’m in this little town of Bahuichivo, Chihuahua. I’ve made a friend with Jose, who just works in Bahuichivo, but lives about 26 miles away in Temoris.  Now, that may not sound like a big distance, but it is all by mountian dirt roads.  Roads that here in America are politely called “unimproved” or “Jeep.”  (But the same roads are used by Pemex to haul gasoline in big tanker “straights”, not semi’s, into Temoris!)

The way of getting there is a commercial 15 passenger van.  Jose knows the driver, so he and I ride for free.  Jose has this dog, scrawny like most of them there. They aren’t so much pets as part of the scenary.

Next thing I know, Jose has lifted his dog onto the roof! There was some luggage up there, so I guess he actually could have settled into a safe spot.

However, we got to Temoris, and no dog.  Jose was bummed.

      1. You sure it was actually a dog and not a giant mexican rat? A friend’s neighbor adopted a dog in Mexico once, when she got it home…

        😉
