Polis Tops $300,000, Fitz-Gerald Unofficially $220,000

  • by: Colorado Pols

CD-2 candidate Jared Polis has released his fundraising totals for the second quarter, reporting a hefty $300,000 in individual donations for the period.

According to a press release, Polis will “match” the funds he received from the online donation site ActBlue, where he received just over $128,000 in individual contributions–the top fundraiser on the site for the quarter. This is a smart way to spin the inevitable personal funding that multimillionaire Polis will inject into his campaign, and if he keeps to that practice it may well blunt the “rich man buying a seat” argument. The combined sums will put his total take for the period at well over $400,000.

According to Colorado Confidential, opponent Joan Fitz-Gerald will report somewhere around $220,000 for the second quarter. That’s not a bad number, but she was widely expected to beat Polis this quarter unless Polis chose to loan his campaign lots of money. It appears that she didn’t even match the amount of “real” money raised by Polis, let alone the total amount with his partial matching of funds.

We’re not ready to make any major predictive changes at this point, and we want to be clear that we still view Fitz-Gerald as the favorite in this race, but these numbers are significant. They show that Polis enjoys broader support than conventional wisdom has held up to now. Will the big names follow suit? Polis’ press release follows (when Fitz-Gerald releases one, we’ll post it as well).

CD2 CANDIDATE JARED POLIS RAISES OVER $300,000 IN INDIVIDUAL DONATIONS
Swing State Project and Act Blue Names Polis as Top Democratic Fundraiser in the country

Boulder, CO – Tuesday, July 3, 2007 – In a show of openness, the Jared Polis campaign is releasing their preliminary numbers now, nearly two weeks before other campaigns are expected to announce their fundraising results.

The Polis campaign is reporting that it has raised just over $300,000 in individual donations and has over 400 contributors. In addition, according to the Swing State Project and ActBlue.com, he is the number one netroots fundraiser in the country for a Democratic U.S. House of Representative’s seat, having raised $128, 216 online.

“We are grateful for the exceptional online netroots and broad based support for our clear progressive message and we wanted share the preliminary numbers with the public for our first reporting period, as soon as they were available,” stated Polis.  “The contributions to our campaign from the online community clearly indicate the enthusiasm for our forward-thinking message of innovation, hope, and opportunity.”

The support throughout the second Congressional district has been impressive.  43% of Polis’ donors have come from within the district and 65% have come from the state. Polis will match his online donations for this period dollar-for-dollar in acknowledgement of his early netroots supporters.

“We expect the other candidates to do well. However, the true test will be if they can keep up the pace after they have exhausted their special interest supporters,” stated Wanda James, Polis’ campaign manager. “Jared raised all of his money from individuals and our campaign will not accept money from special interest Political Action Committees (PACs); Jared is demonstrating his courage to take on the big corporate interests. ”

The second quarter deadline for fundraising was Saturday, June 30, 2007 with the filing deadline coming this July 15, 2007.  Polis announced his candidacy on May 21, 2007.  His fundraising totals were achieved in less than half of the reporting period.

ABOUT JARED POLIS
In 2000, Jared Polis won statewide office to the Colorado State Board of Education and served as the youngest Chair in the history of the Board. During his six-year tenure, he was a strong advocate for school reform and enhancing educational opportunities. He played an instrumental role in the passage of Amendment 23 to improve state funding for public schools.

The Jared Polis Foundation was founded in 2000 to improve and expand access to education through computer recycling, teacher appreciation, and by serving at-risk youth by creating two innovative charter schools that continue to meet the needs of underserved students: the New America School, aimed at extending the benefits of English literacy and a high school liberal arts education to all students; and the Academy of Urban Learning, founded to serve teens who struggle with homelessness or unstable living conditions.

Having co-founded his first company, American Information Systems, while still in college, Polis has launched several successful business ventures since, including bluemountain.com, Proflowers.com and other online start-ups. He has been named an Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year and one of the top ten young entrepreneurs by Success Magazine.

Jared is a native of Boulder and received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Princeton University.

  1. Polis pulled in a reasonable amount of money for the period, but I wonder if some of that is an active GLBT community out stumping for him.  The online donation is significant, but let’s do a bit of reality injection: When Joe Lieberman went out a-fundraising for Republican Sen. Collins, the netroots – including ActBlue – raised $250,000 IN ONE DAY for Collins’ opponent.

I don’t mean to diminish the accomplishment, though – Polis is showing his savvy and the strength he needs to show early on if he wants to compete with Fitz-Gerald.

    1. What makes this a story is that Jared has raised this all on his own.  Joan has the Union money coming in as well as calling in the favors she has been owed for a long time. Jared reaching out to the LGBT Community is a smart thing to do, as is the Community looking to make history.

I mean come on; after I and 43 putting us back into the Hate State mind set we would make a true statement by electing the first LGBT Congress person from Colorado. Jared brings a lot more then being LGBT to the table and is a great guy.  I am sure this number will add much support for Jared among the folks here in Colorado as well as on a national level.

This is the race to watch in the state and now in the US.

      1. Where are these claims about calling in favors coming from? The same could easily be said about Polis, but that would only be petty rhetoric rather than any insight or speculation of these numbers. Simplistic and baseless attacks are below you.

If you want to talk about the GLBT issue, tell me what has Jared said on the GLBT issue in public? Is he even talking about it?

If you want to talk about Ref I, which was sponsored by Fitz-Gerald, but lost at the polls, how does that help Polis. It would seem to not help either one of them.

TALK ABOUT THE ISSUES AT HAND, NOT EMPTY HYPERBOLE.

        1. Get off your high horse and stop telling people how they should post.  There is nothing wrong with what he said and shame on you for trying to regulate a blog!

          1. Im on a high horse for suggesting that issues are more important then empty hyperbole?

If an empty suit imagine is one that you think is best, go for it. You seem to be a shrill for the Clinton campaign and now the multi-millionaire Polis.

Yes, shame on me for asking for perspective rather than following blindly with hollow rhetoric.

            1. Well we know the deminator must work for Polis.  I want to know if this is his only job.  He probably gets paid $5,000/month to post this stuff. (BTW Dem, if you’re not getting that, you should ask for a raise)

          2. what do they have in common?

When talking about HRC you talk about her experience and electability.

JP is arguably the least experience candidate running for CD-2 and certainly less experienced than JFG.  While any D is likely to win the CD-2, JP’s campaign so far seems to be vote for me because I’m gay–not a broad based appeal.

I don’t understand how you pick your candidates.

      2. The only one Jared will acknowledge with his matching donations is himself.  While Polis’ campaign will not accept money from PAC’s or special interest groups which is entirely legal, remember Jovian Holdings and Jared Polis are the special interest group. Is Jared  demonstrating his courage to take on the big corporate interests? Hardly! Jared could single handedly buy and sell many corporations. He will self fund, as he funded his school board position and Amendment 41 including the legal bills for the defense of 41.

After this new venture  called, “I Wanna be a Congressman,” how much focus and discipline will Jared have if he is one of many freshmen congressmen in Washington? Even folks on the State school board were alarmed at his lack of focus during lengthy meetings and the need to leave the room to carry on other business interests.

“All of us have to step out of meetings occasionally,” concedes Randy DeHoff, the board’s vice chairman. “But I think he (Jared) spends an inordinate amount of time outside board meetings doing other things, and that’s caused resentment among some board members.” Since Polis “has made no secret that he’s got higher ambitions than the State Board of Education,” says DeHoff, “I’ve always had questions about his commitment to this.”

Let’s look at the record, look at the endorsements, look at the candidates that identify with the everyday needs of everyday people. Jared’s millionaire status and self indulgence with his personal “in kind” contributions are hardly identifying traits that represent the constituents of CD 2.

    1. 60% of his 400 contributors were from CD2. I wouldn’t call that popular support, but rather a few people writing some big checks, which shouldn’t be such a big surprise considering the circles Jared moves in.

Also, refering to Joan as a witch is pretty petty consider the legislative accomplishments she has over the years for the people of this state.

And, get a clue. The Big Line reflects who has the best “chance” to win. Joan’s record and local support outweighs the checks Jared can get from his rich buddies.

      1. Please Re Read the facts first.  43% came from within CD 2.

I would love to see how much Union and special intrest money is in Joan’s war chest!  The big line only updates weekly and Jared will prove himself week after week, you will see.

He has picked the right staff, right time to run and has made this a race.

        1. Even less came from within CD2. That doesn’t show very much local support. I’m willing to bet some CA and FL richies donated first, but that’s not a big surprise as I stated before.

I’m looking forward to Jared “proving” to me that he knows the issues, since he doesn’t have a record.

As for the staff, I don’t have a clue who they are, but I have a feeling they are pretty Green. His manager ran the Fawcett campaign and lost to Lamborn. But, hey should could prove us wrong.

          1. Why take shots at his choice for campaign manager, it doesn’t make sense. She took Fawcett ligthyears farther than many other people would have.  Considering the circumstances, a heavily Repub district, she worked some magic.  She’s proven to be innovative and unafraid of a challenge.  I think Polis made the right choice and partnered up with a like minded person.

            1. I can’t buy into the hyperbole of “hiring the right staff, at the right time.”

Like I said, I don’t know the staff including the manager. I do know that she has  run one campaign in Colorado and lost. We are now stuck with one of the worst Represenatives in the US Congress (actually 3 out of 7 are pretty horrible people.)

I also said she could prove people wrong with this race. But from all appearances, the staff seems inexperienced, hence claiming them to be pretty green.

I’m looking for real substance. Not this crap that is being floated.

        2. Looking at those numbers again, 35% of Jared’s money came from out of the state. That’s alot. He’s also going to dumped a lot of his own money into the race, which is predictable since he spent over $1 million on his State Board seat.

If you want to talk about special interest money almost half, at least over $128,000 of Polis’s contributions, was from PAC money.

          1. No your understanding is wrong.

They do have a PAC but they also have a Bundle program.  Just as the Victory Fund and club for growth.  You can turn down the support of the pac but lets people donate to the campaign using the portal.

            1. Bundling is semantic argument.  Legally not PAC money, but functionally PAC money.

personally I don’t care, but don’t say its not PAC money.

              1. the money comes from small donor’s all over the internet.  By your def Obama would also be taking PAC money because he’s raising bundeld money off the web.

                1. Small donors bundled by Interest focused groups that have PACs–PAC money

Small donors collected by Interest focused froups that don’t have PACs–not PAC money. but as some functional similarities.

small donors collected directly by campaign not even close to PAC money.

BTW what organization is raising bundled money for Obama, or is tis just another one of your attacks built on bad information.

Man are you intimidated by Obama.

                  1. If are saying Jared’s ACTBLUE contribtions are PAC then here is Obama’s.

                    http://www.actblue.c

In case you don’t want to go to the link it says Obama took over $26,000 in your words PAC money.  So are you wrong about Jared taking PAC money or Obama a big hypocrite?

                    1.   We’ve had campaign finance regulations at the federal level for nearly 100 years (corporate contributions were banned in 1909, labor union contribution in 1949), but we started to get really serious about regulating this stuff 33 years ago post-Watergate.
It’s been a failure.  I don’t care what you call it (i.e., PAC $$$, bundling, grassroots activist contributions, or avocado salad), the big money will always be there.
Maybe it’s time to get rid of all the regulations as to amounts and simply require full disclosure of who is making how large of a contribution to whom.
The right wingers have their sources of money (from Richard Mellon Scaiffe to Halliburton to Enron to those hapless suckers who are swindled out of $$$ from the likes of Jim and Tammy Bakker, Ted Haggard, Jerry Fallwell, etc.)  The left wingers have their sources of $$$ (be it George Soros, Jared Polis, Tim Gill, Pat Stryker, not to mention those left wingers in Hollywood).
Sounds like a level playing field to me…..

                    2. is a reform like this enacted along with a cap on campaign spending. If you only get to spend, say, $5 million on running for the nomination and another $5 million for the big time then candidates wouldn’t be so focused on raising big money from big donors who will then expect some kind of say in government. And it would mean fewer ads and push polls too – who wouldn’t like that? (Besides the ad agencies and poll takers losing business….)

I know, it’s naive but let me dream a little…

                    3. its the principle.  You claim Jared is taking pac money by doing the same thing Obama is.  You can’t have it both ways danny.  Either you are wrong about Jared or Obama is a liar.

                    4. Amount is irrelevant? The problems with PACs is influence buying: amount is relevant.  Obama got less than 1/10th of 1% of his fundraising for the quarter.  What was it for Polis 40%.  That’s a lot of influence.

Again let me repeat myself I don’t care about PAC money.  I do care when politician’s support is concentrated, because it is an indication of who’s interests he serves.

                    5. when he says he doesn’t take PAC money because he does, but its ok because its only a little bit of pac money.  Things like this are why Obama is totally unelectable because the RNC will blow this up into flip-flopping ads and Obama is to much of a nice guy to fight back.

back to Jared I don’t think there is a PAC in the world that has enough money to buy jared as you claim.  I think the advantage to a self funder is they don’t need the money so this is really just a show of support it doesn’t have the damaging impact you claim.

Lastly if you really don’t care about PAC money why are you talking so much about it?

                    6. I have never seen anyone who offers strawman arguments as often as you do.

Wait a minute you have been arguing that they are not PAC money and now you are saying it would be considered PAC money if Obama ran.  So you are Flip floping.

I’m talking about it because you keep bringing it up.  I care that Polis support is coming from outside of the district, outside of the state, and not driven by the concerns of people in the CD2.

                    7. You say jared is taking PAC money cause he get’s money from Actblue.  I disagree with you here and don’t think its PAC money, but this is what you said earlier in the thread.  You said Jared takes PAC money, so by using your own definition then Obama also takes PAC money because he takes money from actblue.  The problem is Obama claims not to take any pac money so either he is wrong or you are wrong.  Which is it?  I think both of you but thats a different story.

As for money outside of the district JF might as well set up her fundraising office in Denver cause that is where the bulk of her money is going to be coming from that and the out of state woman from emily’s list.  If you are going to hate on jared for this you hate on jf too.

          2. 1 million is a lot to spend on a State Board seat, no doubt. What to make of a guy that made millions in the business community only to choose to spend his time in local politics, and in the local community starting up successful charter schools.  He’s loaded but civic minded, and driven to work on behalf of the people. He obviously doesn’t need their money.  I want a guy like that in the house representing me, who has the muscle to combat special interest and corporate sponsorship. We need people of Jared’s caliber working for us at a state and federal level. It’s time to usher in the best and brightest of the next generation
And everybody saying “I’m not in that district” surprises me since whoever wins will be making decisions that affect all. JFG has been a good democrat for CO.  And she should continue here in CO. But the house seat should be filled by Jared.

  2. As a statewide office holder, and prominent backer of several issue and political campaigns Jared has the tools without relying on his fortune to be very competitive.  Clearly Pols and others over reacted the amed. 41 flap.

    1. Joan Fitz-Gerald herself did everything she could to turn Amendment 41 into a boat anchor for Jared, and it didn’t stick. In fact, the legislature (Senate led by Fitz-Gerald in particular) made ASSES out of themselves trying to paint Amendment 41 as a horrible catastrophe, when a solid majority of voters didn’t agree with them then and still don’t.

Pols was just repeating what all the insiders were saying out of bias against Jared and his uncomfortable “ethics,” and surprise! It ain’t going down like that. Time for some Big Line movement.

Those of us who don’t blindly support the “insiders” because their name ends in “D” should be heartened by what Jared is doing, and I’ll see if I can find some funds for him to match.

      1. I keep hearing the allegations on this site accusing Joan of turning A-41 into a campaign mail piece against Jared, but I never once read Joan say anything of the sort. I can’t recall one time she said anything negative about Polis on this issue.

JeffcoBlue is a flat-out liar on this. In fact, I believe it was the majority of Republicans who took Jared’s horrible amendment to task.

It has nothing to do with “insiders,” but rather Polis has no record. He bought his way into the State Board and skipped most of the meetings. How are we supposed to trust a guy like that?

          1. I’m asking him to back up his claim about Joan making A-41 an election issue, and you want me to do it for him?

            It’s his accusation, not mine.

            1. “It’s a shame that only really rich people will be able to participate in government.”

Joan Fitz-Gerald, making one of many ridiculous statements about Amendment 41

For additional Amendment 41 hyperbole, I can always quote Fitz-Gerald’s henchman Peter “Skybox” Groff a few hundred times. You don’t think people are really so naive as to not know exactly where that was coming from?

Oh, how funny! You’re actually nervous about this, aren’t you? Get used to the feeling.

              1. So guilt by association is ok with you?

Polis is the rich kid in the contest. I suspect he’s going to get beat for hanging out with other multi-millionaires, sucking up campaign contributions while he’s living the high life.

              2. You’re not making me nervous. You’re only irritating me. I think after everything you have shrilled on this thread, has pushed me completely away from helping Polis in anyway, and I’M A DEMOCRAT!

Perhaps I will call up the Fitz-Gerald for Congress Campaign and see what I can do to make sure the candidate with the most experience, understanding of the issues, leadership skils and proven record that help Congressional District 2.

                  1. You and the rest of the Polis shrills are truly childish.  You cannot have an open discussion on much of anything without trailing off into a personal attack. If you think you are doing your candidate any good, you are are wrong.

        1. “I think the supporters need to go back to the voters. And quite frankly, the citizens need to do a better job of educating themselves on what these ballot measures really do.”

-Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald D-Coal Creek Canyon, who says the scholarship provision can’t be undone

              1. Bush was elected twice because he had two strong presidential campaigns. Gore didn’t, Kerry didn’t, so Bush was elected.

I don’t think Joan had much to do with Bush’s reelection.

              2. Bush was elected because of fear mongering and misplaced patriotic values. Bush was elected because money, power and influence manipulated the Florida vote and the votes that were never counted in Ohio. Bush’s “great guy” personality covered the deceit and Americans were duped not once but twice. The electorate does need to educate themselves.

                1. Don’t call me a “scumbag” until you have all your facts straight buddy. Would you say that someone who voted for a resolution with the following language supported G.W. and his war…or opposed it? “…the General Assembly expresses its support of President George W. Bush and his cabinet…for their unwavering determination to either disarm Saddam Hussein or remove him from power…”

If you are able to spin that into something other than support for the war, please try. Otherwise I expect an apology. Don’t be fooled by the politician. Fooling people is their job.

                    1. Her vote was Yes…admittedly like most other Dems in the State Legislature at the time. But then again most Dems in Congress supported the war as well. Is she telling you otherwise? Look it up. The resolution was SJR03-016. The Senate Journal with the vote was February 13, 2003. It sounds like there are some lies floating around, but they aren’t from me.

                    2. 99% of that resolution was about supporting the troops–the Reps were able to get that Bush line, and the Dems, in the minority could not get it out—so it was basically a support the troops resolution, not a vote for the war

                    3. …..state legislators should refrain but voting on meaningless, symbolic resolutions dealing with foreign and military policy over which they have no jurisdiction.
A vote on such an issue just might come back and bite them in the ass….

                    4. Here is the text of the resolution. Sounds to me like one clause was about the troops, and the rest was about agreeing with the war. I’m waiting for my apology.

CONCERNING HONORING PRESIDENT BUSH’S LEADERSHIP IN HIS EFFORT TO PROTECT THE UNITED STATES AGAINST SADDAM HUSSEIN.

WHEREAS, The dictatorship of Iraq has continued to develop weapons of mass destruction in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1441; and

WHEREAS, Iraq’s dictator, Saddam Hussein, has demonstrated a willingness to use weapons of mass destruction against neighboring nations and the citizens of Iraq; and

WHEREAS, Saddam Hussein threatens the Middle East and the world with the threat to use weapons of mass destruction; and

WHEREAS, Saddam Hussein and his regime maintain a continuing, documented involvement with the global terrorist movement; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty-fourth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein:

That the General Assembly expresses its support of President George W. Bush and his cabinet, in cooperation with the United States Congress and the United Nations, for their
unwavering determination to either disarm Saddam Hussein or remove him from power, and also expresses its support of the men and women of the United States armed forces for their
courage and dedication to this mission.

Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Joint Resolution be sent to President George W. Bush, Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, and each member of Colorado’s congressional delegation.

      2. If you didn’t know, an injunction was issues against Amendment 41.
        http://www.denverpos

Colorado did not have a lobbying problem. We didn’t have legislators going to play golf in Scotland or taking trips to Thailand in exchange for legislation. They were going to Nuggests game.

I believe, and in full disclosure voted against Amendment 41, was a horrible mistake passed by voters. That happens when our constitution can be so easily amended by opportunists who can fund large campaigns to skew the public perception of what they are voting on.

Another horrible mistake voters passed is also known as TABOR. Will Polis stick up for that too since at the time the overwhelming majority supported it?

If you want an accusation, how about the opportunist Polis using A-41 as a campaign sling-shot to run for office? Is there any reason a voter shouldn’t believe that?

        1. *Do* go to the voters of CD-2, who voted yes on 41 overwhelmingly like the rest of the state, and tell them what a “horrible mistake” they made–see where that gets you.

Thing is, I don’t actually disagree with you about the constitution, or even that Amendment 41 was flawed. It’s the insider arrogance that bothers me, the contempt for the voter’s intelligence. They’re not as stupid as you think, and there might be a hard lesson coming next August if that’s how Fitz-Gerald thinks she’s going to beat Jared Polis.

You don’t think there’s a “lobbying problem” in Colorado, eh? Let me ask you something: is that going to be a Fitz-Gerald talking point? Really? Because if it is, somebody might have to bring up her husband and the energy/mining industry. Would you care to make any predictions on how that will play in Boulder?

          1. Im glad you can agree that Amendment 41 and our amendment process in Colorado is flawed. I never called the voters stupid. Just because I don’t agree with how they majority voted doesn’t make them stupid, but I can call into question the tactics the campaign used in passing Amendment 41. They completely ignored every flag that was waved over the unintended consequences of their “ethics” reform, which have all happened as a result of arrogance.

I’m also disheartened that you would once again stoop to a personal attack upon another democratic candidates family member. This is only pushing me away from the Polis campaign. I have no dog in that fight, but I will if you keep pushing me towards Joan.

            1. So you “don’t have a dog in that fight,” eh?

This is the same person who just told us a few minutes ago, unbidden, how Polis “bought his way into the State Board and skipped most of the meetings,” right?

The same Go Blue who said in this very thread that Polis is an “opportunist” who is “using A-41 as a campaign sling-shot,” right?

The same person who offhandedly interjects things like “The man is worth about the same as Britany Spears,” right?

Who exactly do you think you’re kidding?

As for the accusation of making a “personal attack on a family member,” I don’t consider mentioning the line of work a family member is in to be one. But again, you’re awfully defensive about this, so you may not be looking at the matter objectively.

If there’s anything I hate it’s having to do this to a fellow Dem. I like you, and your postings here, but what you’re leaving out of your cry of foul play is the fact that Joan “got vicious” on Jared last December, when she decided to turn Amendment 41 into her vehicle with which to discredit Jared Polis. Just like you did repeatedly in your own comments (above).

I have no affiliation with Polis’ campaign, but I’m through with this stupid hit-and-run sniping on him over Amendment 41 or his personal wealth. Have the courage of your conviction and play clean ball, or reap what you sow.

              1. Jeffco Blue, you don’t know what you are talking about. You know nothing about family members of any candidate…..by the way, who inspired the vicious radio ad attacks against Joan when Jared didn’t do his homework ????

                1. I’ll let the actual oppo research people get into it if they want. I don’t work for Jared’s campaign, and I always liked Joan until this crap started.

Good ads, though, and if they made a mistake there it was running them three months late.

              2. Was anything I said wrong? Did Jared not spend over $1million for a State Board Ed seat? Does he not repeatedly walk out of meetings or skip them repeatedly? Can it not be viewed that Amendment 41 was an attempt to move away from his financer role of Democrats, to one that can be said he’s the guy to clean up politics right before he runs for office? —  which is a good move in my view, but opportunistic as well. Does he not have more money than Britany Spears?

Im not kidding anyone. The personal attacks began after I first suggested talking about the issue. It’s this type of negative crap that creates our hostile system. I was told shame on me for asking for a higher standard. I was told Im wet sand in a bathing suit for calling to an end of personal attacks. Im not crying foul or playing innocenet, but don’t act like Im the lone wolf on here.

I have the same conviction to play clean. But if you throw a rock in a glass house…

                1. When you throw out all that stuff you are instigating the attack, isn’t that obvious? And once you do so you certainly don’t have any grounds to claim mistreatment at the lightest rebuff or absurdly threaten to “start supporting” the candidate that you obviously already support. Why else would you be here extemporaneously slinging mud at her opponent? Do you really think even the casual reader is that stupid?

I’m not trying to be mean to you, but please. Refine your technique before this skill goes on your resume.

I did some thinking last night, and I decided that I still like Joan. Joan is a good person overall. She’s just not the right person to represent me and my neighbors. There are other districts she might do well in, and she’s already shown that she’s not averse to moving when necessary (if you know what I mean).

Look, it’s going to be a long fifteen months, and we’ll laugh, we’ll cry, what the hell ever. Just don’t think you can punk people around with cheesy shill “outrage.” We’re all grownups.

          2.   We have a lazy electorate. People don’t read or study the issues. A little razzle dazzle, congeniality, freebees and good looks is how we got George Bush. Twice!

      3. but Pols has been so blind in its JF adoration that it is totally missing how close this race is going to be.  If co pols doesn’t change the big line now I don’t see how it can claim any credable point of view.

        1. you sound like one of the righties making threats to the “liberal” biased Pols. These black/white threats is exactly the type of philosophy the conservatives push. I find it humorous you would do the same

  3. Consider me surprised.  Jared raising over $300,000 in individual contributions in about a month, is a very, very impressive showing.

I am stunned that Jared outraised Joan, before you even consider his personal donation.  I know Mary Alice is saying that Joan beat her goal, but a $220k quarter is well below expectations.  You can bet EMILY’s List will not be happy with this effort.

The only question now is, can Shafroth beat Joan?  Is it possible the sitting Senate President will finish third in the first test of the race?  I doubt it — still figure Will raises $150-200k.

With the in-kind, that means Jared already has a 2-1 advantage over Joan.

This race might be more interesting than people thought.

    1. I would hold off on judgment until official numbers are in. Fitz-Gerald said she raised at least $220k…this was when Colorado Confidential called and asked…not a press release by the campaign. Shafroth has yet to release any numbers. Polis made a decision to release his estimate of numbers right away, but that doesn’t mean he controls what will be the actual result.

      1. Emily’s list will absolutly pull out.  In JF defense she really hasn’t made much time to focus on fundraising because of all the legislative armtwisting she’s had to do this quarter, but this is a bad sign for her.  Getting a slow start out of the gate is going to give dem donors pause and may keep money on the sidelines while donors wait and see who the winner will be.

    2. Why would Emily’s List jump out of a race that is Fitz-Jareld’s to lose? I would think the opposite would be true.

Regardless of matching funds, Jared is going to have more money than Fitz-Gerald if he self-finances. The man is worth about the same as Britany Spears… if not more?

This is sad to see the Jared supports so vicious out of the gate. I’m interested in this race becuase of the dynamics of the candidates, not to bash one candidate or the other.

      1. humorous that just a couple of days ago folks were ripping on Jared for using his sexual orientation in reaching out to the gay community for financial support, while now some of these same people are concerned about Joan’s standing with EMILY’s list–which supports only female candidates based on their gender and support of abortion rights.

        1. I don’t live in CD2, therefor have no real vested interest in that race. Im interested in the candidates involved. It should be an exciting race, but the Polis people on Pols are really pushing me to call up the Fitz-Gerald campaign and volunteer some of my time to helping her win the primary.

You don’t win over support and voters by shoving your view down their throat.

          1. A little disclosure.  I am in the district and am neither a Polis or Fitzgerald supporter and have no dog in this fight.  The fact that both are solid candidates makes me believe the race between the two will be intense, but I really hope this dosen’t devolve into some sort of a pissing match.  Just be glad we have two good candidates.

That being said, have a great 4th !

        2. Joan supporters getting all indignant about supposedly “vicious” Jared supporters will have a little trouble rationalizing the gayerthanjared-dot-com (not dignifying it with a link) site, and after today they’re apoplectic enough. What an eye-roller.

          1.   And I’m wondering what the GOP strategy is for dealing with every contingency in C.D. 2.
While Joan is still the frontrunner, Jared’s fundraising and the fact that A-41 is receding as an issue (thanks to an activist judge and an injunction) raise the real possibility that Jared could win the Dem nomination.
I figured that the GOP would write off C.D. 2 (like C.D. 1) and focus on protecting C.D. 4.  If Joan is the nominee, they may yet concede C.D. 2 to the Dems.
But I find it hard to imagine that the homophobic wing nuts running the Republican Party in this state would allow Colo. to send an openly-gay Congressman to D.C.
              What’s the plan, guys?

            1. He’ll become Colorado’s own HRC.  A boogey man trotted out to drive up turnout and fund raising.  Its hard to use Tim Gill as the gay boogey man, even though he’s done more to support gay issues, because he’s not an elected official.  Trust me the R’s won’t run against him, they’ll use him for fund raising.

I’d still support him if I didn’t think he was an incompetant dilettant.  That opinion is based on the poor language of A41, the amount of money he spent on the school board, and the lack of apparant effort he put into the position he bought.

                1.   I don’t live in C.D. 2 so I don’t get to choose between these two candidates.  I know both of them personally, and they are both excellent people (in different ways) and either would make a fine U.S. Rep.
At the end of the day if I did live in C.D. 2, I’d probably vote for Jared.  First, the label “dilettante” is offensive.  This young man (when he was still virtually a kid) took his parents’ mom-and-pop business, applied new technology to it (the Internet), and made a fortune for his family.  He’s neither stupid nor a dilettante.
He made a mistake w/ A-41.  I’ve made mistakes in life too.  So have many other people.  Perhaps Joan never made a mistake.  Anyone out there know of any……?
Finally, regarding the “gay thing,” I confess that that is one factor in my support for Jared.  There are 433 self-professed heterosexuals in the U.S. House.  (Notice I called them self-professed, not confirmed.  Eventually one of them will have a Mark Foley moment.)  There are one lesbian (Tammy Baldwin) and one openly gay man (Barney Frank).
Yeah, the U.S. House of Reps should more accurately represent the general population.  I’m not suggesting strict numerical quotas……….that’s insane and unworkable.
Hillary is working the “estrogen angle” in appealing to women to vote, and there’s nothing wrong with that.  (My mother is a big fan of Hillary, and I think it’s because of the gender pride thing.)
Obama is trying to appeal to African-Americans.  Mitt is working the LDS crowd.  So what’s wrong w/ Jared working the GLBT angle?
I don’t think two openly gay Congressmen out of 435 is disproportionately over-representative.

                  1. I don’t like people buyng offices so the can play at them.  He had a poor reputation at the board.  He made a lot of money modernizing the family business, but the only thing he did that was unusual for the late 90’s was sell at the right time.

You missed my point about JP’s orientation.  I don’t care, I only sort of care that he’s using it to drive his own fundraising. Does he want to represent the CD-2 or gay america, house member are supposed to represent their districts?  The national candidates are after all national candidates and are supposed to represent us all.

My original point is that the GOP won’t run against him, they will use him as a fund raising boogey man to help drive mailings.

I don’t thik that should stop him from running or anyone for voting for him.  I personally don’t think he is as qualified as JFG and his one big political victory was a disaster.

BTW who wrote the actual language of 41

                    1. If the choice is betwen a candidate spending an obscene amount of his or her own money, versus prostituting himself or herself to an obscene amount of money from other people, I’d just assume that they self-finance.  Maybe this is why I’m atracted to Mike Bloomberg.

                    2. why is it so bad that he’s going after “gay” money.  With emily’s list’s help joan is going after pro-choice woman who live outside of cd-2, but thats ok with you?

                  2. I agree. What I took issue with was how the Polis people are representing Jared. “Ding dong the witch is dead” after one quater of funrdaising? Claiming she began viciously attacking Polis over Amendment 41 at the beginning of session is compete Bull Shit as well, yet they would like to continue pulling the Jared is innocent card, while as claiming that A-41 was a good thing. Both is shit.

I’ve made mistakes, voters have made mistakes, eveyone makes mistakes. Polis just will not admit to Amendment 41 beinig a mistake. What kind of leadership is that?

I have no issue with Jared being openly gay. I have no problem with him seeking support from the GLBT community. He should, as well as every other Democrat. We all believe in Civil Rights for all Citizens. What I have a problem is empty rhetoric. Joan actually has a proven track record, and one that all Democrats can be proud of. Jared doesn’t. When I bring that up, I get attacked by the Polis people. They can’t stand to called out on the issues, so they attack personally.

It’s shit like that turns voters away, and why Republicans use it.

      2. Emily’s list only helps the people who are working hard for support. Peggy Lamm was not hitting the call time she needed and they were weak on support.

  4. What’s even more promising for the Polis campaign is that as impressive as his fundraising has been, the full thrust of his campaigning in CD-2 has not yet begun.  I saw him at a Q&A the other day and he showed a command over the issues and had a genuinely folksy connection to the crowd.  It wasn’t hard jump on board.

  5. I am not a Polis supporter but this is a very impressive show of support. If he does this again next quarter, outraising JFG in the number of people donating and dollars – then we have a very even race.

  6. Well, I wasn’t reading Pols yesterday, so I’m just responding to this item now.  Still on the front page, though…

Anyway, I have to agree with the people who see Jared Polis as a rather lightweight candidate.  He’s not evil by any means.  My impression of him is that he likes to believe that he has Great Ideas, in the same way that the guy running for Student Council has ideas about changing the menu in the lunchroom and bringing in the White Stripes to play the school prom.  In other words, lacking in realism.

I met him socially a few times (back when he was Jared Schutz).  Of course, he was still pretty young then.  But, he was obviously ambitious, and he sure knew how to take advantage of the gullible investors in the dot-com boom.  I was amused when he spent that $1M on the school board seat; I recall his opponent spent about $10K.  At the time, it was obvious Jared was buying himself a low-effort position in state politics in order to establish himself for a future run.

I don’t live in CD-2.  But, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

      1. A lightweight in terms of ideas.  Of course, that can be said of many (most? all?) politicians.  I don’t know Joan Fitz-Gerald.  She may be no more substantial.
