Musgrave Raises $243,000

As the Fort Collins Coloradoan reports:

Northern Colorado’s two announced Democratic congressional candidates are touting their initial fundraising totals for the 2008 campaign, but their combined totals are dwarfed by the money raised by incumbent Republican Rep. Marilyn Musgrave…

Musgrave’s campaign reported Friday that it raised nearly $243,000 from April 1 through June 30, bringing her total fundraising for the 2008 campaign to more than $500,000. Musgrave’s campaign currently has about $400,000 in the bank, campaign spokesman Jason Thielman said.

“We’re entering the 2008 campaign cycle in a very strong position,” Thielman said. “We have the unified party behind us, four times as much cash on hand as the closest Democrat in the race and have 10 times the total donors. We’re feeling really good.”

Musgrave had 1,600 donors give to her re-election bid since April, while Paccione had 450 and Markey had 121.

However, Musgrave’s totals lag well behind where she was at the same point in the 2006 campaign.

By the end of June 2005, Musgrave had reported raising almost $960,000, with more than $634,000 in the bank.

It’s true these aren’t the same outsized numbers we saw from Musgrave this time last election cycle, but most observers agree the “New Musgrave” is in a much stronger position politically now than she was in 2005. She may not need it.

Still, not posting nearly a million dollars should give her Democratic challengers some hope. Or at least motivation to get off their butts and get serious about their so-far lackluster fundraising.

  1. I dunno… Marilyn’s reputed to be ‘bi’ these days… not sure her ‘constituency’ is bright enough realize it’s bipartisan.

That alone could be enough to swing the election.

Always hard to lead a pack of knee-jerkin goosesteppers. One wrong leg motion and you’ve got a heck of a pileup.

  2. Either she’s not taking this race seriously or she’s having trouble of her own.  I know a lot of the top democratic house members have been raising twice that much.  Look at Klein, Giffords, and Gillabrand they are all hovering around a million.  Musgrave was recently added to the repub top watch list too, so my guess is her new bi image is hurting her fundraising, or repubs are just sick of having to bail her out.

    1. At present MM is not facing a credible threat. Others are. Add to that that the Repubs are sick of having to fight for a “safe” seat and that combination may be what’s holding it back.

  3. I guess it proves Markey’s statement on money isn’t any help at all, money really is going to matter this time around & the Dems need a more serious fundraiser to bring down Musgrave!  I don’t think the NRCC is going to be as eager to help her this time around, so if the Dem can pull something reasonable with money, it’ll go a long way this time around!

    1. ….and they’re probably hoping that a presentable conservative like Mark Hillman will enter the race and take the nod from Musty, but at the end of the day when Musty is the GOP candidate (and she likely will be), they’ll have to ante up the money to save her.
The House GOP is at 204 seats now.  They can’t get to 218 by writing off “safe” seats like Colo. C.D. 4.
The real problem will be for the Republican sacraficial lambs in C.D.s 3 and 7, who will have next to no money because everything will be pumped into the Schaffer campaign, the C.D. 5 primary, and saving Musty in 4.
