Tommy T Wants You to Bring Your Friends to Iowa

( – promoted by Colorado Pols)

…And in exchange he’ll fly you to our nations capitol for an all expenses paid trip including a tour of, a tour of. . . wait, what? I thought that it was the male Buchanan who had this kind of trouble with terminology. . .

O say, can you see the Capitol (or capital) with Tancredo?

DES MOINES, Iowa – If someone offered you “a tour of the U.S. Capitol,” would you expect to get a guided tour of the building where Congress does its business? Or would you expect a tour of the city where the U.S. government resides? That’s a key distinction at issue as Rep. Tom Tancredo’s presidential campaign defends itself from anonymous charges alleging that it violated House of Representatives ethics rules with a July 14 letter to supporters. An anonymous e-mail writer has been trying to get Iowa news outlets to investigate the letter sent by Tancredo’s senior adviser, Bay Buchanan, to Tancredo supporters, encouraging them to recruit their friends to attend the Iowa Republican Party’s nonbinding but closely watched Ames Straw Poll on Aug. 11. In the July 14 letter, Buchanan outlined various incentives for people who help build Tancredo’s “Army Against Amnesty” that night. The top producers, those who bring at least 25 voters, according to Buchanan’s letter, are to get an “autographed book, T-shirt, and an all-expenses paid trip to D.C. to meet Tom for dinner and get a tour of the U.S. Capitol!”

Love that the RMN’s Sprenglemeyer dug up the statute in question, that’s good reporting.

  1. This is a good link to M.E.’s post.

Here’s what Tom Tom’s staff says:

“We will be touring with Tom to his favorite spots in Washington. We’d just be giving the same tour they could be getting publicly. The tour is of Washington, D.C. There’s certainly no prohibition.”

They are trying to say their reference to the “U.S. Capitol” is a tour of Washington, D.C., not the publicly funded building. That is a lie. Note how “Capitol” is capitalized [cough].

    Definition of “capitol”:

1 a: a building in which a state legislative body meets b: a group of buildings in which the functions of state government are carried out
2capitalized : the building in which the United States Congress meets at Washington

    Definition of “capital”:

3[2capital] a: a city serving as a seat of government

Poor Tom Tancredo: “I ran for President and all I got was this lousy FEC suit!”

  2. ….are not he and Bay Buchanan stepping into the same deep pile of macaca that Angie Paccione stepped in last year w/ a solicitation letter?
Makes you wonder when politicians make the same old mistakes that their colleagues made when there are so many new mistakes yet to be made…..

  3. doh!

what part of illegal do these people not understand?  they come to our halls of Congress and flaunt our laws, now expecting some sort of amnesty?  i think they should all be deported.

  4. I find it equally interesting that Tancredo’s so damn desperate for votes that he’s gonna give an “all expenses paid” trip to D.C. to any schmoe who can con 25 others into attending the straw poll.

    What a sleazebag.
