From The Columbine Courier:
Jefferson County Public Schools will probably have to do without the district’s planetarium beginning next school year.
Thanks to the failure of the $350 million bond issue and the $35-million-a-year tax increase, the 40-year-old planetarium will be closed indefinitely as part of a long list of budget cuts contemplated by the school board and school administration for next year and beyond.
The biggest impact will come in staff reductions, which are expected to reach a total of nearly 300 over the next three years.
The district is seeking to make $35 million in cuts over the next three years, with a target of $12 million in cuts for the 2009-10 school year.
Complicating matters is the prospect that state government may cut school funding by as much as $54 million because of the state budget shortfall. In addition, revenue from property taxes is expected to decline as the recession drives property values lower.

that the district needs a planetarium. I don’t see it. What are the prioities of the district that a planetarium has been funded for forty years while at times there have been enormous elementary classes and mediocre libraries? I see a planetarium as unnecessary at best and a luxury at worst. Sure it’s nice to have one, but literacy and a real education rank higher on my list of priorities, and I’m an old teacher. To me, the planetarium is Jeffco schools’ version of the county building, a shiny bangle.
