On Feb. 8th, 2009, the Democratic Party of Denver will go through its biennial Reorganization (Reorg). This is where we elect our new officers at the county, distirct and sub-district level.
Below is a description of the positions that are open. All positions are two-year terms from Feb. 2009 – Feb. 2011
Feel free to discuss who you would like to see run, who is running, and so on.
I would welcome any Republican to create a similar diary for their party and I will be happy to promote it.
Offices open at re-org:
County Party Chair: Currently held by Jennifer Coken who is not running again so she can run for HD4. Cindy Lowery is the only anounced candidate thus far for it.
County Party Vice-Chair: Currently held by Rachel Kienzler who is not running again due to employment conflicts. Jennifer Jacobsen is the only announced candidate so far.
County Party Secretary: Currently held by yours truly. I will not running again due to an employment conflict. Update: The only announced candidate has dropped out, so it is open.
County Party Treasurer: Currently held by Andrew Oh-Willeke who made it clear at the time of his election that only intended to serve one term to help get our finances in order (which he has done a fantastic job of!). Ed Hall is the only announced candidate so far.
All House District and Senate District Officers are up for election. These folks serve three functions: Run their district Reorg, run their district assembly in 2010, and run any vacancy committee meeting that may come up in their district. These are the current officers (Chair, ViceChair, Secy):
HD1: Gordon Blankenship, Landau de Laguna, Michelle Moss
HD2: Karen Morrissey, Ed Hall, vacant
HD3: Paula Van Dusen, Jeannie McWilliams, Perry Keene
HD4: Dan Pabon, Janine Solano, Vicky Ortega
HD5: Rudy Torrez, Crisanta Duran, Vicki Rottman
HD6: Margaret Sobocinski, Beth Ferguson, Anne Farrell
HD7: Isabella Allen, John Walsh, Mark Mehringer

SD33: Chris Martinez, Derek Officer, John Daniels
SD34: Rebecca Brooks, Terry Brown, Vicky Ortega
SD35: Michele Lawonn, Jim Corlett, Paula Van Dusen
SubDistrict Captains and Co-Captains are the poeple who do the day-to-day business of the party in their districts. Denver has 9 HD’s in it and we divide each HD in half so there is an A subdistrict and a B subdistrict. These people also make up the County Party’s Executive Committee along with the County Officers and up to 12 Captains-at-Large who are appointed by the County Chair to fill whatever role is needed (usually things like Fundraising Chair, GOTV Chair, Rules Chair, etc). Here are the current Captains and Co-Captains:
1A: Susan Lontine, vacant
1B: Karen hatch, Peter Steadman
2A: Tom Parson, Karen Morrissey
2B: Bal Martinez-Chaves, Andrea Merida
3A: Barb Pyle, Jack Dorwart
3B: Cindy Brown, Andrea Montague
4A: Jon Lehmann, Dan Pabon
4B: John Erhardt, Will Ferrera
5A: Crisanta Duran, vacant
5B: Rudy Torrez, Josh Rosenblum
6A: Margaret Sobocinski, Sallyanne Ofner
6B: Dick Peterson, Anna Flynn
7A: Isabella Allen, Burnie Baker
7B: Ralph Nordhauser, John Walsh
8A: Angela Lombard, Ben Marter
8B: Mary Brice, Sean McDermott
9A: Scott Bates, Kathy Steinberg
9B: Ann Meredyth, Faye Rison
Each SubDistrict also gets a Finance Chair who is appointed by the Captain. Some districts choose to have only one Finance Chair for the whole House District. Finance Chairs also hold a spot on the Executive Committee.
Ar Re-Org we will also be selecting bonus members to the State Party’s Executive Committee and the State Central Committee as well as the CD1 Central Committee. It typically works out to one or two per subdistrict.

And I really like Scott Bates. He ran a good campaign for state rep, but he just didn’t have the support that Miklosi and Rosenthal had.
Thanks to you Dan, and to everyone else who holds these offices. They’re not very glamorous, but they’re important to what we do in Denver.
By the way, it wouldn’t be Denver Pols without you, so I’m glad you are a front pager as well.
My job, which is now up on the air as well :(, prevents me from having day-to-day involvement with the party, but I can still hold positions which have limited responsibility.
Therefore I will be seeking the Chairmanship of HD2 as well as CD1. These positions have the important roles of running the assembly for their district and any potential vacancy committee meetings.
CD1’s CU Regent position is up in 2010. I have not heard yet if Michael Carrigan will seek re-election.
In HD2, Mark Ferrandino is poised to be there for the forseeable future, but this district has a history of sudden departures, so it is good to be ready in the event it happens.
The combination of these two positions also gives me spots on the County and State Central Committees so I can still have my finger in the pie, so to speak.
You should stay active in the party. With the apparent departure of Oh-Willeke, I would have been sad if you were going too.
If I was in HD2 I would vote for you, but I’m up in HD8. I wonder how much I want to put myself in for. I am about to step down as Director of a local literary society and I’m enjoying the idea of being an indian rather than a chief.
If you were intereted in that position, we could see if thre is an open slot in your precinct.
Among other things, it would give you a vote at the Re-Org in Feb if you got appaoint more that 21 days prior.
Rick Van Wie has informed the party officers that he has not decided to pursue the Secretary’s position with the Denver Dems. He cited his concern that the job required too much of his time to adequately be a husband, father, and bread-winner for the family.
So if anyone is interested in the position, please contact myself (the current Secretary who is not running for re-election) or the current Chair, Jennifer Coken (chair@denverdemocrats.org)
