(As featured in "Today in BS" – promoted by Colorado Pols)
Jon Caldara, who heads up the libertarian Independence Institute, carries a smirk on his face a lot of the time. So you're often not sure what to believe when he talks.
Such was the case, on his Channel 12 show, Devil’s Advocate (at 5:45), last month. when he made this comment about Colorado Sen. President John Morse:
Caldara: “And during this [gun debate], he [Morse] went on a tantrum and started saying, we gun owners have a sickness in our soul, we have a sickness in our soul. It was personal.”
A regular old sickness is enough. But in your soul. That's bad.
But what Morse actually said at the Legislature was:
Morse: “Robert F. Kennedy said after Martin Luther King’s assassination that violence breeds violence. Repression breeds retaliation. And only a cleansing of our whole society can remove this sickness from our souls.”
Does anyone besides Caldara think Morse was saying that gun owners have a sickness in their souls?
Morse, and Kennedy, were obviously referring to removing the sickness of violence from society.
If there's any sickness here, you can find it in Caldara. The ailment is called "RecklessFactLessOsis." It's common among talk-show hosts, and it spreads ideologically. The best medicine is to read more and talk less.
I'll update this blog post when Caldara responds to my request for a comment/clarification about his twistiness.
He should make an on-air correction.

Maybe Eliot should take a crack at this one. No wait. That would only lead to a 100+ post thread of evasions and faulty logic.
Also, this is Caldera expresssing his persecution complex.
The GOP's "we are the victims here" standard excuse for their inexcusible behavior and overheated rhetoric.
There's a name for these type of groups that peddle disinformation. Can't put my finger on it though…
But, …but I have read this quote attributed to Morse many, many times. Therefore he must have said it. Or meant it.
Hey, I am all for removing violence from society.
This means no more government because the very premise of government is based on coercion and violence. Government is simply one group of violent people aggressing towards another group of violent people.
Without violence, government could not exist…
BTW Caldara should resign and let a capable person defend and expand Liberty. Coors loves him but that isn’t saying much.
I'm OK if you want to secede Nockers. Maybe there's a 'transit area' in DIA or something where you can be a nation of 1.
Honestly, Nock…
Do you even read what you write? Turn it around…without government, violence will SURELY exist!
The premise of government is not based on coercion and violence. Unless you are talking about the kind of government you apparently happen to favor. (I think it is referred to as "Feudalism", or "Plutarchy" in the modern vernacular).
Government should be based on cooperation and fairness…on peaceful resoultion to differences through understanding, forbearance, kindness…you know …all those "gifts" you pronounced about in the open thread.
Try thinking before you type….
note: resolution, that is..
Above all else, government exists to provide security, which is accomplished by having a monopoly on force. In the absence of a monopoly on force, you have no government. So in the strict sense you are correct about violence.
However, the reverse is also true: without government you have violence. The degree of violence in the abscence of government is greater and more severe than with the existence of government.
