Stengel Draws Bulk of Ire from Pro-C Republicans

Interestingly, many Republican legislators who supported Referenda C&D were not directing the majority of their anger in the aftermath of the campaign at Jon Caldara or Marc Holtzman, but at Rep. Joe Stengel. Stengel, many of them said, was the most dishonest of the NO camp and has apparently burned several of his bridges as a result.

Meanwhile, it sounds like grumblings are growing in regards to Bob Beauprez, who half-heartedly opposed Referenda C&D and then issued a press release explaining why fiscal restraint was necessary — a move that many in the NO on C&D camp (and we’re talking those outside of the Holtzman camp) took as an insult.

  7. Stengel stood right next to the Governor, the Speaker and the rest of the Senate/House leadership who helped to broker the compromise last March. He was there smiling for the camera’s and sticking his mug in there and then completely flip-flopped on the entire issue.

    I have a hard time saying that he was the most despicable person on the “No” side – Caldera was pretty ugly – but Joe gave him a run for his money.

  8. The best term for Bob Beauprez is Owen’s Bitch.
    Beauprez’s failure of leadership was striking and will damage him down the line. Republicans on both sides of C & D are disgusted by him.
    Holtzman however has earned the respect of all factions. I even heard Joe Blake saying kind things about Holtzman. Even the Country Club Republicans are dropping Beauprez

    Beauprez’s lack of leadership disgusted both the pro and anti C & D crowd. Marc Holtzman earned the respect of all sides by being tough and tenacious but never making it personal. I hear that even Joe Blake was saying very nice things about Holtzman. If the Country Club Republicans abandon Beauprez he is a goner

  10. Stengel may be dumped as Republican Leader when the caucus reconvenes. Stengel simply has not been taking care of business. Balmer focused on electing Republicans and has earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues. The only way Stengel stays as leader is if Holtzman drops as much money into the Republican coffers as the four millionaires dropped last time out for the Democrats

  12. I am amazed that when someone mentions Bob Beauprez on this site that all the Holtzman staffers stop everything and start dumping on him.  I think it is fine to disagree, but the Holtzman folks need to trun it down a notch.

  13. To Jonathan’s point, I’m actually surprised that no BB folks have come to his defense. Usually BB supporters explode whenever anything remotely negative appears on this site about their boy.

  14. Ummm…  Stengel is term limited.  So no amount of Holtzman money will help him get re-elected to the House.

    If you are talking about a mid-term coup, don’t count on it.  The House GOP members are probably smart enough to not engage in any such public display that would demonstrate a fissure in the GOP.

    However, I think Stengel handled this in the worst possible way.  I don’t think he could have looked more ridiculous or unethical if he had tried.  He needs to follow the example set by McElhany, which is – hey, we lost.  Now we need to stand up for the taxpayers and ensure the money available due to C is spent in the right way.

    That is what a statesman would do.  Is Stengel up to it?  We will see.  But past performance gives me little hope.

  17. In today’s Denver Post Stengel tried to lay all the blame for losing the legislature on the doorstep of Owens…  Come on Joe!  Don’t you have a role in keeping your own house?  And then he has the audacity to say he wants to patch things up with Billy boy. 
    This is the same guy who was so throughly confused by the budget issue that he stood in a press conference supporting it before fighting wildly against it.  With R leadership like that, Stengel can take a chunk of blame home with him self.  What a total and complete pinhead.

    I don’t disagree there is a fissure.  What I mean is that a coup would be a public demonstration of the fissure and a huge embarrassment.

    Having said that, and as a Republican who wholeheartedly supported C & D, I know this is something we will get past.  It seems to me that the difference between the Republican Party and the Democratic Party is that we Republicans allow disagreement.  Not just on this issue, but on many other issues, including abortion (which is why I seriously doubt the Democrats will nominate Ritter).

    Stengel’s statement that Colorado is a blue state is one of the more stupid things I have heard.  Just because I, as a Republican, voted for C&D does not mean I will vote Democratic in the next election.  He does a lot of harm to the party with such childish statements.

    Joe, if you are reading this, stand up and act like a leader.  Right now you are acting like a crybaby.

    Come on, you can’t really believe that, can you? One of the major problems for the national Democratic Party is that it has a hard time focusing it’s agenda and message – one factor in that is the Democrats never hestitate to question their own Party’s leadership and message. Contrast that with the national GOP which generally adhere’s to Reagan’s 11th Commandment.

  21. I think the 4 millionaires once again did demonstrate that money can turn a red state blue. Last election cycle with a Republican voting majority they took over both chambers in the legislature. 

    This week they prevailed again.

    Remember the photos guys. It was the Governor standing with Hick, Ken Gordon, Andrew Romanoff and friends.  If anyone is to blame it is the Gov, not Stengel.

Let’s get back to Stengel.  He is accusing the D’s of talking out of both sides of his mouth.  This coming from the guy who was once for C&D (and attended the press conference announcing the deal) and then flip-flopped and decided he was against it.  He is now blaming the gov for losing the legislature. Joe is lost and without Holtzman’s daddy paying the bills will be even more irrelevant than he was last year.  Here’s some advice – BarBri, great way to study for the bar.  Good luck with that.

  23. GOPgone, YOU look at that photo of everybody standing in the Rotunda singing Kumbaya.  Sure, it’s owens, Gordon, Romanoff, Hick along with a batch of top Republicans…including the House Minority Leader, Joe Stengel, who bragged to the press about how he helped put the deal together.
    A week later, he doesn’t like the poll numbers and begins attacking his progeny.  At least the Gov takes stands and sticks to them.  Flip-Flop Stengel takes polls and breaks his word.  This guy is a disaster for the GOP.  He should step aside for Schultheis, who at least stands for something, even if it’s usually the wrong thing.

    You almost had me.  I agreed with everything you said, right up until the time you mentioned Schultheis.  He is the one guy who would be guaranteed to make the House GOP look even worse.  Besides, he has little regard among his colleagues, except for the fringe.  So he couldn’t get the votes.

    There would be several worthy candidates, starting with Al White or Keith King.  But not Six Shooter Schultheis.

    Yep, that photo laughingly on St. Paddys Day had lots of GOPer’s in it because they were told only the basics of the plan.  Almost all of them jumped ship a week or two later when the devil in the details were outlined.

    The photo on Tuesday was the Gov and Andrew Romanoff gazing lovingly at each other.  The only other GOPer’s in the room were the squishies.

    Watch for the Dems to throw the Gov under the bus.  They have used him for getting what they want and don’t need him anymore.  The Gov wants transportation — HAHAHAHAHAHAHA says Joan Fitzgerald in Wednesday’s paper.

    All the money will go for the Dems pet projects because they have the votes.

  26. The Democrats will be sticking to the text of Ref. C.  Owens lost his Transportation funds because they were all in Ref. D, and the 10% bond repayment remnant in Ref. D is barely enough to pay for the required funding covered by D.

    The Dems vs. Governor dog won’t hunt on this issue.

    Newsflash, these “pet projects” you speak of were just greenlighted by the people on Tuesday. They approved spending for health care and education and the Dems would be beyond foolish, in an election year no less, to start handing out favors.

    Sen. Gordon and Speaker Romanoff and even Morgan Carroll were quoted in 2 different articles in todays paper talking about how there will not be any new programs. The money from Ref C will just be enough to restore services, not enough to start passing around on “pet projects”.

    David Balmer has raised a ton of money for fellow Republicans. The money is in his hands and under his control.
    Stengel is a lame duck who will be ousted. This has nothing to do with C & D but with competence. Owens still has some IOU’s even with opponents of C & D. Watch for the Governor to discreetly use those ideas not just to oust but embarass Stengel.

  29. Stengel is a decent guy who felt the need to stand up against Owens and C and D. And now the Owens hord come here and post, trying to oust the guy. New Flash: Stengel earned more respect from the conservatives in the House than you can ever know. And he earned it because he stood up against the corrupt administration. May, Balmer, Penry, and all the other leaders in the House will back Joe 100%. Everything else is wishfull thinking.

    Stengel earned no respect from anyone. Marc Holtzman earned respect Stengel just made a fool of himself. Stengel by engaging in buffoonery with that conference call the day after the election instead of working to unite the party signed his obit as Minority Leader. Stengel has further ambitions politically that is why he took on C & D. But, his only job is to help Republican House members and he has failed that miserably. Goodbye Joe Hello Balmer

    I’m no fan of Schultheis, but he calls the shots and Stengel obediently follows.  I’d love Al White, but he is suspected by some of having a working IQ and no recent felonies, which would kill him with the Schultheis crowd.  Keith King would have been speaker if the Rs kept the house, turned down the minority leader job.  Still,if
    Stengel really did consider the good of the party, stepping aside for King would help the Rs a lot.  Stengel’s latest stupidity, opposing using C funds for pay as you go highway funding, only underscores the man’s loose cannon status.

    You seem to be in the know. I am looking at the “deal” that the Guv struck and one of the provisions says that it “Protects the TABOR limit on the growth of government”.  Sounds good and Stengel and others could support it.

    Unfortunately, the Gov didn’t reveal that he was behind the Senate amendments that lifted the caps on spending forever thereby allowing UNLIMITED growth on the government.

    Also, the original House bill had a reduction in the state income tax rate starting in 2006 — which ended up getting postponed until 2011.

    Not small details and the reason Stengel and others pulled their support.

    Details, details.  They get you everytime.

    By the way, which department of the Gov’s office do you work for?

    Than Tommy Tancredo better start looking over his shoulder. Balmer makes things happen. Keith King and Josh Penry will both support Balmer for Leader of the Republican Caucus

  36. gopone, I don’t know whether to call you a liar or a fool, when you claim C “lifted the caps on spending forever thereby allowing UNLIMITED growth on the government.”
    In truth, the caps return in 2011. and future increases again are limited to inflation and population growth, just as they always did prior to the recession.  Refunds will resume if there is any real growth, because the tabor caps don’t allow for real growth.  Stengel knew all this and admitted switching sides after taking some heat from Douglas Bruce types.  And I don’t work for the governor, so the question remains:  When you made your claim, where you lying or just being a fool.  I suppose we could compromise and put you in both categories.

    I quote from the fiscal note from the SOS office regarding Ref C:

    Beginning in 2011, Referendum C is estimated to allow the state to keep $995 million above
    its spending limit, plus annual increases for inflation plus population growth.

    For easy math, let’s just call $995 million as $1 billion and guess we will conservatively have at least 5% growth in population and inflation each year over 5 years.  That means the state will be allowed to spend up to $1.25 BILLION more each year (and of course, adjusted up every year) beginning in 2011.  The proponents of Ref C kept quoting the $3.5 billion number but they never told the voters about the $1.25 BILLION plus more every single year after 2011.

    Hmmmmm. Perhaps you need stop attacking me personally (calling me a liar and fool) and stick to the facts.

    BTW, I don’t know Jon Caldera.

    I honestly have no idea what point you are trying to make and honestly, at this point I don’t really care.

    Cynicism lost last week, the State of Colorado won… time to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, shelve the bizzaro arguments, and move on.

    I’ll take that as a concession.  I never said the cap reset was hidden, you made that up on your own.

    However, you did say I was “fool”.  Perhaps you should grow up and quit calling people names.
