This is an office that gets overlooked a lot when we discuss upcoming political battles. However, Colorado has 22 Judicial Districts and each one elects a District Attorney. These offices are all up for election this year.
Below is a list of the info I have so far about who is running. I have a lot of questions so if you have the answers please post them.
JD1 (Jefferson, Gilpin): Incumbent Scott Storey (R) is running for re-election. No other known candidates.
JD2 (Denver): Incumbent Mitch Morrissey (D) is running for re-election, no other known candidates.
JD3 (Las Animas, Huerfano): Incumbent Lee Allen Hawke (D) is eligible to run again (is he running for re-election?). Another Dem, Frank Ruybalid, has filed candidate papers.
JD4 (El Paso, Teller): Incumbent John Newsome (R) is running for re-election. No other known candidates.
JD5 (Clear Creek, Summit, Lake, Eagle): Incumbent Mark Hurlbert (R) is running for re-election. No other known candidates.
JD6 (La Plata, Archuleta, San Juan): Incumbent Craig Stephen Westberg (R) is eligible to run for re-election (is he running?). Sarah Law (D) has filed candidate papers. (A DA named Law is just too funny to not comment on!)
JD7 (Delta, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Montrose, Ouray, San Miguel): Incumbent Thomas Raynes (R) is eligible to run again (is he?). Another Republican, Myrl Serra, has filed candidate papers.
JD8 (Larimer, Jackson): Incumbent Larry Abrahamson (R) is running for re-election. No one else has filed.
JD9 (Garfield, Pitkin, Rio Blanco): Incumbent Colleen Truden (R) is elgible to run again (is she?). Another Republican, Martin Beeson, as filed.
JD10 (Pueblo): Incumbent Bill Thiebaut (D) is running for re-election. No one else has filed.
JD11 (Custer, Freemont): Incumbent Molly Chilson (R) is eligible to run again (is she?). Another Republican, Thom Ledoux, has filed.
JD12 (Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Rio Grande, Saquache): open seat. 3 Dems have filed: David Mahonee, Daniel Powell, and Matthew Hobbs.
JD13 (Kit Carson, Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington, Yuma): Incumbent Bob Wilson (R) is eligible to run again. No one has filed candidate papers.
JD14 (Grand, Moffat, Routt): Incumbent Bonnie Roesnick (R) is eligible to run again (is she?). Another Republican has filed: Elizabeth Oldham.
JD15 (Baca, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Prowers): open seat. Only filed candidate: Jennifer Swanson (R)
JD16 (Bent, Crowley, Otero): Incumbent Rodney Fouracre (D) is eligible to run again (is he?). No one has filed candidate papers.
JD17 (Adams, Broomfield): Incumbent Don Quick (D) is running for re-election. No one else has filed.
JD18 (Douglas, Arapahoe, Elbert, Lincoln): Incumbent Carol Chambers (R) is running for re-election. No one else has filed. With all of the increased population in this district, I wonder if there are any thoughts to breaking it into two?
JD19 (Weld): Incumbent Ken Buck (R) is eligible to run again. Is he? No one has filed.
JD20 (Boulder): open seat. Stan Garnett (D) is the only filed candidate
JD21 (Mesa): Incumbent Pete Hautzinger (R) is running for re-election. No one else has filed.

Want me to write up the gory details of this one? The short version is:
Incumbent Craig Westberg (R) is facing DUI charges and will be tried May 19th and 20th. There are all sorts of wacky aspects to this case, but…at least his name recognition is very high right now? Heh. I don’t know if he’s masochistic enough to run again.
Sarah Law (D) was DA from 1996-2004 and was term-limited out. I guess that the term limit law only applies to consecutive terms.
Todd Risberg (D) is also running for the DA job. (I don’t know if he’s filed papers yet, but he spoke to the La Plata County Assembly yesterday.) He has worked in the DA’s office, has been a San Juan County judge, and is currently the court-appointed defense attorney in a local high-profile rape and murder trial.
This race is a big deal here, as you can probably guess, due to the principals being in the news quite a bit lately. I’m writing some stuff up for the La Plata Dems on the primary candidates – the 6th Judicial Assembly is in March, and I’m a delegate – and I can post it on ColoradoPols if anybody outside SW Colorado cares. 🙂
The standard time someone has to stay out of office once termed is 8 years. But Judicial Districts may, by a vote of the people, alter their term limit rules such as allow more terms, get rid of them altogether, etc. I have no idea if JD6 altered theirs or not.
A DA named Law…that is toooooo cool!
I just looked it up. There has to only be a four-year break before a former officer holder can run for the same office.
Dunno – but I imagine that everyone concerned knows the relevant laws!
When I first moved here, she was DA, and I was extremely amused by that!
Truden was recalled and one of the deputy DAs she fired replaced her. I strongly suspect that the current incumbent will run for re-election.
Chambers has been incredibly controversial. I would be stunned if she didn’t face some sort of opposition and would expect both a primary challenge and a D opponent.
A JD split is quite unlikely. Reallocating judges is quite unwieldly and the issues that come up at an appellate court level with larger courts (e.g. the 9th Circuit) are less important at the trial court level where the court system treats cases as if the system was organized at the courty level for all purposes except allowing flexibility in allocating judges to cases.
