Signs Your Campaign is Not Off to a Good Start

Yesterday there was a small story in the Denver Post about Democratic State Rep. Gary Lindstrom trying to float his name for governor, likely in hopes for something else. The Post only mentioned it in passing, which is not a good sign that he was being taken seriously. An even worse sign, however, is when your small local paper isn’t even taking you seriously. The Summit Daily News in Breckenridge doesn’t even bother giving Lindsrom more than a handful of words (h/t Coyote Gulch for the link):

State Rep. Gary Lindstrom (D-Breckenridge) is considering a run for governor in 2006.

The long-time Summit County resident is contemplating a run for the Democratic nomination in 2006 because friends, acquaintances and “people that I know” have asked him to consider it.

“I think their concern is, right now, it doesn’t appear the Democratic party has a strong candidate for governor,” Lindstrom said. Lindstrom has not announced that he will run, and said he would not make a decision as to whether he would until Dec. 1.

“People have asked me to think about it, and so I’m thinking about it,” Lindstrom said, adding that he didn’t want to create a high level of interest in his potential candidacy until after the Nov. 1 general election, when Colorado voters will decide on Referenda C and D, the proposed state budget measures.

“People he knows” have asked him to run for governor. Gary, dude, your neighbor and your golf buddy asking you to run for governor don’t constitue an outcry of support. Our dog told us we should run for Premier of China.

Even political folks we talked to yesterday don’t even know who Lindstrom is, but good work getting yourself in the paper twice, Gary. This is clearly an attempt to try to be in the Lt. Governor mix, but he obviously didn’t generate enough buzz to make that likely.

  1. OK.  Other than Mrs. Lindstrom and maybe the assorted Lindstrom children, if there are any, has anybody heard of this guy?  And what has he accomplished that would make him more competent to govern Colorado than any 100 people chosen randomly from the Denver phone book?

  2. Hey gang-

Lay off the jokes about Gary’s wife asking him to run.  His wife is in a nursing home.  I think it’s acute MS, but I’m not sure.  Either way, she is totally incapacitated and Gary’s been a great husband to her.

Having said that, I think he’s more than out of his league to consider such a run.  Doesn’t he share a lot of his district with Fitzgerald?

  3. Here’s an interesting scenario. What is Gary is putting his name out for Gov. only to get a little name recognition built so that when Fitz-Gerald runs, he can then run for her senate seat being a little better known. Just a thought.
