The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Friday:
If you read this space, you knew this was coming. But even now that the odd-couple alliance between Ralph Reed and John McCain is complete, you still can’t believe that it’s true.
On Thursday afternoon, Republicans around Georgia received an invitation from Reed, who will serve as a host of a “special event” for McCain at the downtown Marriot Marquis on Aug. 18.
“John McCain believes in a strong national defense, a smaller, more accountable government, steady economic growth and opportunity, the dignity of life and traditional values,” wrote Reed, whose 2006 campaign for lieutenant governor sank under the weight of evidence detailing his relationship with Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff – much of it uncovered by McCain’s Indian Affairs Committee.
Here in Colorado, every Jack Abramoff angle is a rich meal–from Senate candidate Bob Schaffer’s now-infamous work on behalf of Abramoff in the Mariana Islands to former Interior Secretary Gale Norton, whose front office suffered from some serious Abramoff-related attrition at the hands of McCain’s same Indian Affairs Committee.
McCain is in no way ignorant of this stuff: he even went on record in Norton’s defense while going after her immediate subordinates, helping to prove the rule about expendable staffers being a really good thing in a clutch.
Schaffer has been a frequent attendee to McCain events in Colorado lately, and was present at least once while McCain bragged about his role in “uncovering” Abramoff. According to reports, the grin on Schaffer’s face grew a little more artificial.
Getting back to Reed and McCain, here’s our question: does the irony of any of this occur to advance men setting up these gigs? Shouldn’t somebody on the payroll have the presence of mind to speak up and say, “don’t have your picture taken with this guy?” This seems obvious to us, but maybe there’s something we’re not getting.
