McCain Camp: Democrats Trashed The Flag

( – promoted by Colorado Pols)

From our “fair and balanced” friends at Fox News. To their credit they do describe the claim in a skeptical manner, though they describe the incident itself in great detail, and with, what one might call, a flair for the dramatic.

Democrats are not caring for their Stars and Stripes. At least that’s the message out of John McCain’s campaign.

McCain supporters, claiming they rescued 12,000 miniature American flags from the site of Barack Obama’s nomination acceptance speech last Thursday, redistributed the orphan flags [rsb emphasis] to audience members ahead of a McCain rally in Colorado Springs on Saturday.

It gets better.

Would you believe:

McCain supporters said the flags were discovered by a vendor at Denver’s Invesco Field after the conclusion of the Democratic National Convention. The vendor supposedly found trash bags full of flags in and near garbage bins, and turned them over to the McCain campaign.

Boy Scouts were sorting through 84 bags of flags in Colorado on Saturday, before a McCain supporter had veterans distribute them to the audience. [rsb emphasis]

Fox even quoted a Democratic official!

Damon Jones, spokesman for the Democratic National Convention Committee, released a statement saying McCain should applaud the fact that thousands of American flags were “proudly waved” at [the] convention.

“But instead his supporters wrongfully took leftover bundles of our flags from the stadium to play out a cheap political stunt calling into question our patriotism,” he said.

As someone who attended that speech, I have to say that I saw maybe one or two flags discarded out of literally tens of thousands that were distributed throughout the crowd. I even “rescued” a few of the flags myself–though I didn’t think I was “rescuing” anything at the time–and they are now displayed proudly throughout my apartment. I saw many others who did the same thing.

When you accuse others of being unpatriotic, and then go so far as to use the flag you claim to love as evidence against them, you show a profound disrespect to it, and to the country for which it stands.

And in case all you commie, pinko, Anti-American, marxist, socialist, flag-hating liberals forgot, here’s a reminder about proper disposal of the flag:

US Code Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 8:

(k) The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

Why do Democrats hate the flag so much?

  1. We walked back to the Alameda light rail station from Invesco and almost every bike rider that came by had a flag stored on the back of their bike.  From what I saw people carried out their American flags from Invesco with smiling pride.

This is more of the same kind of crap as the Bush administration.  In 2001, they claimed that Clinton staffers vandalized White House offices before leaving.  It turned out to be a complete lie and this is just more of the same.  Anyone who votes for McCain votes for continued Bush lies.

  2. Confirmed: it’s bullshit, and one of the lowest tricks yet. These flags were not “in the trash.” They were going to be reused at other events, they were extras (84,000 attendees, 125,000 flags). For the most part they were in their original packaging. They were thieved by an opportunistic Republican employee who lied about the circumstances under which he got them.

The way they were misrepresented to the righties in Colorado Springs should make every Americans’ skin crawl. A great story, except it’s a LIE.

        1. The flags in question were on the dock by the dumpsters for 8 days after the end of the convention.  In hefty bags, according to the guy that found them.

The person thinks it was probably an “oversight” by the Democrats rather than any nefarious plot against the flag. But the person doesn’t believe anyone was coming to get them: “The flags were there for a week and a day and no one came looking for them.”

          Link

It sounds like some intern just made a mistake and gave the McCain some easy red meat.

          1. The “rescuer” has remained anonymous and Col Joe Rice, Littleton State House Rep, gave his account on the news last night that almost all took home there flags and the remaining ones were collected  for use at future events.

I know I took home mine in a sea of people carrying flags.  Iknow that the night was full of rousing chants of USA.  I know that I and every Dem I know is as patriotic as anyone.

I am inclined to trust the word of a three tour Iraq war veteran who has a bronze star and combat action badge among his many commendations.  Pretty sure Col. Rice doesn’t hate America or the flag.

Maybe the Republicans are grasping at straws to advance their case that Dems are unpatriotic because they know that, over the next weeks, their is bound to be more scrutiny of the cozy relationship between Sarah Palin and the anti-American, anti-patriotic, AIP, Alaska INDEPENDENCE party.

Hard to get much closer to actual treason  than telling that group, as Sarah Palin has, what a GREAT JOB they are doing and it’s on video.

Misplacing flags, if that’s what happened, doesn’t come close.  And for those who say you can’t call her unpatriotic with her son going to Iraq, why should she get credit for that any more than blame for her daughter’s pregnancy or her husband’s long time AIP membership?  You can’t have it both ways.

Republicans who won’t stop impugning Dems’ patriotism are asking for very harsh scrutiny and I hope, for a change, the MSM gives it to them.  They certainly haven’t so far in spite of all the whining.

The Republicans are the ones who keep bringing up the pretty much non-existent MSM attacks on Palin’s daughter, while the MSM isn’t spending time on that and isn’t even spending time on her pastor’s offensive tirades or the AIP.  So they are left grasping at little paper flags.

            1. Most R’s like me probably think it’s pretty stupid, yet comical.

It also doesn’t mean it’s not embarrassing, particularly for Sen. Obama who has seemed to have unnecessary issues with the flag that he’s brought on himself.

              1. is the Borrow and Squander policies of Republicans all the while pretending they can run government with tax cuts.

The basic equation for balancing the purchase of Government Goods and Services is:

                Spending = Revenue + Borrowing

Republicans are shameless liars to say that they are holding down taxes while borrowing record amounts of money from foreign countries.  It is a lie of gigantic proportions to say that Republicans are fiscally responsible when they are taxing our children with this staggering amount of borrowing so that Halliburton and Blackwater can make their mercenary profits.  I consider that kind of lying a lot more unpatriotic than what to do with some left over souvenirs.

                1. Let me ask you something:

Is it possible for someone to have a different economic view than you and not have to be a SHAMELESS LIAR!!!?

Id’ love to debate economics with you, but not when it’s trying to wade through insults to get to your point about revenue.

Did you see anywhere in my post where I said the Dems were unpatriotic over this flag thing?

No, of course not.  I said it was funny.  And it is, but it’s nothing.  If a single voter changes his mind over something like that, then I’ll wait for the swarms of locusts and earthquakes the next day.

Now, if you want a related tongue-in-cheek  corollary that will stick in your craw, you could say that it was most likely a younger Obama staffer or volunteer made a mistake and had the flags thrown by the trash because they’d had a bad educational grounding in civics due to the teachers unions being in control of education in this country for 40 years.

                  🙂

                  1. True, believing in particular ivory tower economic theories is not being a liar. However, sticking with those theories no matter how completely they have been   discredited by inconvenient reality over lengthy periods of time is both stupid and a little crazy.  The proof is in the pudding and trickle down voodoo pudding SUCKS just as much as does neocon foreign policy theory pudding.

And you haven’t addressed the fact that disgusting attacks on Dem patriotism have been a centerpiece of every Republican campaign for decades or how a patriot can laud the AIP.

                  2. to call it lying LB.

I watched multiple days of the Republican convention and all of the speakers including the Presidential and Vice Presidential nominees spoke at length about how the evil Democrats would RAISE taxes if they were elected but not a one of these speakers spoke about the record deficits run up by the Bush administration.  Not one sentence was uttered about 10 trillion dollars in debt and the total exclusion of Ron Paul who actually gets the scam that Republicans are running.  It is a dishonest narrative and the Republican leadership knows it to try an infer that your side is better at running government without taxing people when at the same time you are borrowing money at record rates.  Republicans are teenage girls gone wild with a credit card.  Liars are liars LB and every Republican politician who talks about how evil it is to tax people when he is borrowing money is a bald face liar.

                    1. …and take an econ class.  A faulty application of good principles can bring about bad results (see: W). Also, do you think it’s only the Republicans fault about the deficits?

You know that we’ve had record tax collections after Bush’s cuts, right?

Seriously, tone it down if you want me to respond to you. Otherwise you’re just another unbalanced, shrieky leftie that blames everything on one of two inept political parties.

                    2. Record collections–true, but I don’t think on a nominal basis.

Under BushI/Clinton deficits declined, because we had a rational tax policy.

Under BushII even without the war deficits increased, even  during the “recovery”.

My only beef with Obama is that he isn’t attacking the deficit hard enough in his plan, but his plan is better than McCain’s plan.  McCain has massive tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations (corps already have low effective tax rates despite what their lobby says) and no significant spending cuts.

                    3. needs to tone it down.  I’m somehow being bad by bringing up the Achilles heel of the Republican tax cut scam.

The difference between Republicans and Democrats is that Democrats actually try to reduce our borrowing.  Republicans use it as a shell game to hide the fact that they are increasing government spending while pretending they know how to run government without taxing anyone.

Check this one out non-Lb posters.

                      http://www.cedarcomm.com/~stev

Notice where the curve flattens (hint 1994-2000)

I guess what really stinks about these fraudulent claims by Republicans that they can run government without tax revenue is that it they are the ones who are unpatriotic to expect our children to pay for our squandering of our resources for things like George W Bush’s boutique wars.  They have convinced the country that paying taxes is a bad thing even though we have one of the best standards of living in the world.

But having some left over American flags that aren’t promptly rounded up proves that Democrats are unpatriotic.  I prefer my definition of unpatriotic.

                    4. While the author is obviously biased, it’s a good example of some facts are impossible to ignore.  I loved these zingers, of many:

At no time since 1945 when Republicans have been in total charge of both elected branches of government have they reduced spending.  They talk about it a lot, but they never deliver.

Only during the last two years of the Reagan administration was the Congress completely controlled by Democrats, and the records show that the growth of the debt slowed during this period.  It appears that the frequently referenced Reagan’s Conservative mythology is contrary to the truth, he was an award winning, record setting liberal spender.

In 1993 President Clinton inherited the deficit spending problem and did more than just talk about it; he fixed it.  In his first two years and with a cooperative Democratic Congress he set the course for the best economy this country has ever experienced.  Then he worked with what could be characterized as the most hostile Congress in history, led by Republicans for the last six years of his administration.  Yet, under constant personal attacks from the right, he still managed to get the growth of the debt down to 0.32% (one third of one percent) his last year in office.  Had his policies been followed for one more year the debt would have been reduced for the first time since the Kennedy administration.

                    5. Politicians who live high on the hog using their credit cards for everything from abstinence only education to mercenaries in Iraq.  You know them.  They are arrogant and question your patriotism and tell you how much better they are at running the government and all the while they are applying for more credit cards and hope that one day their going to win the lottery so that they can pay off all their staggering debts.

Credit card conservatives are some of the most dishonest and dangerous politicians in the country.  You don’t wage war with tax cuts.  You ask people to suck it up and sacrifice.  Unfortunately this cowardly bunch of credit card conservatives don’t have the guts to ask the American people to sacrifice.  They are willing to lie to get elected and then pass their problems on to the next generations.  What lying cowards.

                      http://www.brillig.com/debt_cl

                    6. You’re not “bad” by bringing up the ‘achilles heel’ of a tax plan.  But I’m already listening to you.  You don’t need to go on and on about patriotism and ‘liars’.

Obama has proposed nearly $1 trillion in new government programs on his website.  How is he going to help the deficit spending by doing that?  How much could he possibly raise taxes?  The war is expensive, but even if we spend zero in Iraq (which is unrealistic) we’re still spending and probably increasing what we spend in Afghanistan.

Or is Afghanistan a ’boutique war’?  If you think so, then we don’t really have much chance of a rational discussion, and I’ll move on.

                    7. aka The Bonnie and Clyde Solution.

You go where the money is.

“To those who much is given, much is expected.”  Or something like that.

    1. When the news reports say that they sat on the dock for eight days, that’s how they’re “re-used” for other events?

Sounds like Dem talking points to me.

      ****Let me be clear****

I don’t think that Obama ordered the flags to be trashed.  It was probably some kind of mistake.  But leaving 12,500 flags next to a dumpster for eight days is pretty stupid, and it would be easy to see how someone would think they were meant for the trash after they sat there so long.

        1. Using them just for Obama’s speech and then leaving them on a dock next to a dumpster for eight days is a political stunt and does cheapen their meaning.  🙂

          Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

I see what you’re saying and I don’t know.  Because the argument could certainly be made that both uses were for a political stunt.

Which one cheapens the flag more?  I don’t know.

I grabbed three of the flags.  I gave one to my brother in law who was in the AF, and another to a man who was going to put it on his father’s grave.  At least they’re not on the dock anymore!

  3. They are all over our house.  As we were leaving our group was adamant about keeping the flags as a memory of what we just witnessed.

What is wrong with the republicans? It reminds me of the saying,

“If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit.”

    1. I was there early enough to watch the volunteers handing the flags out — from black Hefty bags. The flags were rolled together in bundles that corresponded to the number of seats in a row.

I bet that’s how they were “found” by their “rescuer.”

Mine is in the flowerpot on my front stoop. I tried to attach my CHANGE sign to it, but the stick is a little too short.

  4. Idolatry is another.

Hey, are these flags like the star flake babies???? Rescued by good pro-flag Republicans?

I “love” how patriotic Americans like auto dealers and veteran’s organizations (Englewood on Santa Fe) and cars are often filthy dirty.

  5. It’s probably worth taking a look at the DNC’s lease contract regarding removal of props, displays, signs etc following an event.  These things are usually covered in a typical event lease contract.

Something mildy fishy; If the extra flags had been left behind and mistaken for trash, they would have gotten dumpsterized within the eight days following Obama’s acceptance speech. If they were discovered and held by an Invesco employee, the stadium may certainly be in breach.

I suspect that it’s possible an unscrupulous Invesco employee ferreted said flags away shortly after the event, for later use in yet another Dem-smearing opportunity.

They were certainly NOT left behind by us or anyone whose empty seat I passed on my way out of the stadium.  There was a conscious effort to get as many “souvenir grabs” as one could upon exiting Invesco.

If stockpiles of American flags were stolen for political fodder, it would be about as un-American as any dirty deed yet.

  6. It is not like there was not a big crowd and a lot of field workers at Invesco after Barack’s speech. That leads me to believe the flags were NOT in or by a dumpster.

They must have been “stored” somewhere for later use, and not discarded.  So, it would appear that the flags were stolen by the repubs.

  7. The story of how an untruthful slur against 85,000 proud Americans was created and foisted on the press.

But I’m not holding my breath.

What was it Obama said? “It’s not about me… it’s about YOU.” How true. The Republicans are now claiming that all these 85,000 people hate America and hate the flag.
