“Putting lipstick on a pig” is a slang rhetorical idiom, used dismissively to accuse an opponent of making superficial or cosmetic changes in a futile attempt to disguise the true nature of a product.
Silly season is in full mode, and John Sidney–abandoning issues apparently and deciding to run on media-spun ‘personality’–is playing the role of Clown-in-Chief.
Although an old idiom, one that McSame has repeatedly used himself to describe the policies of his various opponents, he is now demanding that the Obama campaign apologize for using cliches.
My friends–that’s not ‘change’ we can believe in. Sow’s ear or sow, McSame’s tired, worn-out, and rejected policies of the past are neither a silk purse nor capable of being re-branded with a bit of Estee Lauder.
During the GOP convention, prime time speakers failed to mention Afghanistan–where for the last few months U.S. casualties have surpassed those in Iraq. Rudy (noun-verb-911) mentioned Osama of course–falsely linking him to Iraq and failing to mention that he goes on uncaptured as Al Qaeda grows stronger.
The GOP speakers didn’t mention the economy, they didn’t mention vets (but they put up a great screen shot of the Walter Reed Middle School along with some nice stock photos of African Americans).
Its no wonder that the wallowing porcine policies of Bush/Cheney are something McSame wants to pretend he differs from, although the campaign has been unable to provide any actual details on which policies he disagrees with. McSame said the Katrina response was disgraceful–although he was dining on cake with W as that city drowned. He said he always knew Iraq would be difficult–but ample video exists to demonstrate that he is either a liar or seriously befuddled.
Anyone following the issues–those things the McSame ticket are trying to avoid–can see that J. Sidney’s running mate is severely truth-challenged. The ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ that she campaigned for and then kept the money from after it became a political liability unlikely to be supported by Congress. The state plane she sold at a loss (and not on E-Bay). The tens of thousands she billed to Alaska taxpayers for living at her home (as a per diem).
But the election is not really about Sar-RAH, Sar-RAH, its about four more years of the same old shit. And no matter how you dress up a pig… well you know the saying. It’s not enough to just put some lipstick on it.

As Josh Marshall put it, McCain is running the “sleaziest, most dishonest and race-baiting campaign of our lifetimes.”
Also known as mooseshit.
but I guess when the incumbent Republican is as much of a failure as Dubya, and when you have spent the last eight years kissing up to him, as a candidate lies are all you have. Still, its shameful, and a disgrace, and one wonders how hungry that old man must be for power to sink to such lies and tactics. He’s my dad’s age, and after 50+ years of work, dad has the sense to be enjoying retirement.
Remember, McCain didn’t spend the last eight years “kissing up” to Bush — he bore a grudge (rightly so) over Bush’s treatment of him and his family in the 2000 primaries and flirted with switching parties in 2001. Later, when fellow vet John Kerry got the nomination and told the truth about Iraq, earning McCain’s agreement, he was in discussions with the Kerry campaign about a “national unity” ticket, but balked. It’s only in the last two years McCain has been so wholly in Bush’s pocket and only in the last couple months Rove has held sway. That’s why it’s so hard for the national press (McCain’s “base”) to tell it like it is.
