Republican Rep. Jim Welker, a Democrat’s best friend for his timeless ability to make ridiculous comments, is back in the news for a story that first surfaced earlier this week in a Loveland paper. From The Denver Post:
A public-relations adviser to Rep. Jim Welker has resigned over a controversial e-mail the Loveland Republican forwarded to some of his constituents last week.
Erin Bergstrom told the Loveland Daily Reporter-Herald in a statement that “Rep. Welker’s choice to forward an e-mail containing racially charged language has made this announcement necessary,” according to the newspaper.
Bergstrom declined to discuss the matter Wednesday. “It was my own idea” to resign, she said, “but I am not willing to comment further at this time.”
Welker’s e-mail, which contained an African-American minister’s essay titled “Moral poverty costs blacks in New Orleans,” won him a thorough round of condemnation at the Capitol last week. He apologized to the full House on Friday, saying he had not read the e-mail carefully enough before he sent it.
In a “Capitol Weekly Update” e-mail to constituents Monday, Welker said he took “full responsibility” for forgetting to put a disclaimer on the e-mail. The essay said, “It was primarily immoral, welfare- pampered blacks that stayed behind and waited for the government to bail them out” in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Welker took responsibility for “forgetting to put a disclaimer on the e-mail.” What would the disclaimer have read? Disclaimer: I’m an idiot for forwarding this e-mail.

The stunning news here is that Welker ever HAD a public relations advisor! Who knew?
Good one, Voyager. You gotta wonder if HE knew–based on his latest email foray, I’m guessing “No”?!
He is the poster child for what Republicans ought NOT to stand for. Rumor has it that he may not run again. As a loyal R, I/we can only….pray…alot.
I agree with Jesse Lee Peterson and Welker should have never apologized for quoting him.
His backtracking is disappointing.
Well, Plumber, you’ll understand if I vote against you when I have the opportunity …

Lumberjack,
All I’ve ever desired from government is to be left alone. When I was about 21, I realized that it isn’t the nature of government to leave people alone. In fact, quite the opposite.
I realized that I was born free, and government threw me in shackles. Liberty is a gift from God, tyranny is ultimate consequence of government.
The government cannot give me what I want, only take away what I have. There is therefore no reason to vote against me (even though that would be foolish) as I won’t be running.
Govt would be happy to leave you alone, when you want to travel the roads safely, breathe clean air and drink clean water, have a fire in your home put out, when you want the police to come when you are a crime victim……..
