BREAKING: Darryl Glenn Dominates at Republican State Convention

Darryl Glenn, the new favorite in the race for the Republican Senate nomination.
Darryl Glenn, the new favorite in the race for the Republican Senate nomination.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and his strong ground game ended up capturing 34 of 37 delegates at the Republican State Convention in Colorado Springs on Saturday, but that wasn’t the biggest news of the day…

El Paso County Commissioner Darryl Glenn captured the top only ballot spot in the race for U.S. Senate after delivering one hell of a speech to the delegates at World Arena. We suggested on Friday that Glenn seemed to have a good chance at making the ballot through the convention, but we never would have guessed that he could have performed so well as to keep state Sen. Tim Neville off the ballot completely.

Here are the voting results, which may change slightly before they become official:

Darryl Glenn: 2,664
Tim Neville: 696
Peg Littleton: 218
Jerry Natividad: 183

This obviously portends a significant change in the U.S. Senate race. If Glenn can turn his huge convention victory into a solid few weeks of fundraising success, he may be the new frontrunner in the battle for the GOP Senate nomination in June. As the longest-running candidate on the Republican side, things may finally have shifted in his favor.

Glenn is more well-known among Republican voters than the like of Jack Graham or Jon Keyser, and his own military background will make it difficult for Keyser to try to use his one-trick pony of a message (Glenn spent 21 years in the military, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force). And as we’ve seen from various GOP county assembly results this week, this is not a good year to be the “establishment” candidate, as Keyser has clearly become with the backing of the NRSC (nevermind this ridiculously-transparent attempt from the Colorado Springs Gazette to claim that Neville was the establishment guy).

As we have noted on numerous occasions here, Glenn has consistently been the best performer at the various Republican Senate debates. Glenn is the best speaker of the bunch in the Republican field, and apparently he has the strongest grassroots support. If he can raise money from a post-Convention bounce, Glenn will be the candidate to beat in June.

    1. Maybe not. Glenn has a strong military background of his own that could be devastating to Keyser — particularly since Keyser has nothing else to talk about.

      1. Totally agree with you. Seems like every debate, Keyser acts like he has a monopoly on military service – not so, a fact that Glenn reminds him of in these exchanges! Keyser is a one-note candidate who wasn't content to be a newbie legislator.

  1. Any chance of Timmy running on the Constitution Party line? Who will protect the Second Amendment? I'll bet Dudley some splaining to do……

    1. Nah, for two reasons:

Nobody fundraises defeat better than Dud.  (A cynic might opine that he really prefers losing to winning for personal monetary gain …)  With Neville now a wounded, bleeding battlefield casualty, who's left to protect Colorado's ammosexual community?

Two, el Dudbo placed his national delegates, where the big graft is; expect a sizeable commission.

      1. Pedant alert, not so fast.

Panzer /ˈpænzər/ (German pronunciation: [ˈpantsɐ] ( listen)) is a German word that meansarmour. It is also used by the Germans as an abbreviation meaning "armored fighting vehicle" or tank (the military vehicle). The full German word for "armoured combat vehicle" is Panzerkampfwagen. The word Panzer is occasionally used in English and some other languages as a loanword in the contexts of German military.

        1. That's why I can't stand German, even though it's part of my ethnic heritage as a kid of an Austrian immigrant. My mother and her family used to talk about us kids in German, and when I finally studied the language, it seems as though you just keep adding suffixes to infinity. It's consistent, and reliable, but just plain ugly.

Plus, it sounds like hacking and spitting. Give me a Latin language anytime.

          1. Indeed, mama…I studied German in high school and have always marveled at what a brutal language it is. One only has to compare the translations of the phrase "I love you"   in French..(.je t'aime)  and German (Ich liebe dich)….it only gets worse from there….smiley

  2. After being listed as the head of a powerful faction of the Republican party, Tim Neville getting all of 696 votes (18%) has gotta sting.

Can hardly wait for the primary strategies to emerge.

  3. Hey Colorado Pols.  You know what's coming, so I'll just be nice.  So who is it now that you think is the favorite in the Republican Primary?  Another case of you talking about politics and having no idea what you are talking about.  You really should take down your Big Line.  It's based upon nothing but flawed "political insight" especially when it comes to Republicans.  Gee, its just really stunning that your favored candidate gets less than 20% of the vote.  As I've said before, your "political insight" is nothing but pure speculation.

And just for my pure enjoyment and edification.  Hope you're having a good morning this morning Dudley.  So much for your domination of the State Republican Party.  All it takes to knock you down is a great speech.  Paper Tiger, but very few people know how to defeat you, certainly not the Democrats.

  4. ….because Republicans are so open-minded and inclusive, and they love their Black Brothers and Sisters with that kind of Free Market Love that only a Republican can give.

  5. Neiener Neener told ya so.

Darryl Glenn will be the Republican Senate nominee. Now, as to his chances of defeating Bennet in the General, those are iffy. But there isn't anybody else stepping up so far, and the GOP will only fracture its delicately balanced base if they draft a Senate candidate to primary the guy who declared and has been campaigning since last January.

So, Pols, I see you've redone the Big Line to take out the comment about seeing Mike Pence in drag before Glenn would be the nominee.

Just curious, Pols – why not mention the one candidate who has declared that he is running for Bennet's seat? Darryl Glenn has raised $26K, (as of April 2015), is campaigning seriously, and has actually declared for the office.

I mean, I agree with you that he is lightweight politically, super-conservative in the tea party vein, but he's going to get some military votes even if he has no military policy specifics. He's kind of a smooth talker, and has won his EPCO comissionerships handily.

You're probably right that "You’ll see Indiana Gov. Mike Pence in drag before you see Glenn in the Senate."

But I think that you should at least mention Glenn's candidacy.

Well, the fact that he has raised only $26,000 (as a "serious" candidate) plays a role. Hell, we're surprised that he raised that much, and Bennet raised $2 million in the first quarter. $26k is peanuts in a U.S. Senate race — you could do that with 6-7 max donors.

We get a variation of this question all the time. Our basic rule of thumb is that it must be at least plausible for a candidate to win the election in order for us to pay much attention. Anybody can fill out paperwork and build a website. Put it this way: If the 2016 Senate election were held 100 times, do you honestly think Glenn could win even once?

    Snerk. cool

  6. To be fair to ColPols, the GOP, both national and Colorado, has been going so full GOT bonkers this past year, they've kind of defied prediction. Back when our GOP was kicking out one Chair to install another only to stage a failed coup against the new one, who would have predicted Trump as a serious, much less leading, GOP presidential nominee candidate, followed by Cruz, the guy the R leadership and most fellow Senators despise. Everything about the 2015/2016 GOP at every level has been chaos and insanity. Past conventional wisdom is no longer operational.
