Senate Pick (Still) "Coming Soon"

As the Rocky Mountain News reports:

Gov. Bill Ritter has promised a decision “soon” on a U.S. Senate replacement for Interior Secretary nominee Ken Salazar, and that could turn out to be faster than a New York minute.

The Colorado governor’s office is being cryptic about the exact timing of Ritter’s decision on a Senate appointment, but political observers say it’s in his interests to announce a selection quickly – perhaps within days.

If so, that would be quicker than two other states that have U.S. Senate seats in limbo: Illinois and New York…

“All we are saying is that there will be a decision and an announcement soon,” Ritter spokesman Evan Dreyer said in an e-mail Monday. He declined to elaborate in a phone interview later, except to say an announcement would be made “quickly,” and “as soon as possible.”

Various political observers said Monday that they expect Ritter to announce a pick within days, long before Salazar’s scheduled Senate confirmation hearing on Jan. 15…

Blogojavech has appointed former IL AG Roland Burris, an African American, to fill Obama’s senate seat.  It will now be pretty hard for the Senate to follow through on the threat not to seat a Blogo appointment, regardless of whether it is determined that they really have the right to do so. Blogo did this against the advice of his attorney.

    I don’t think I would.  Why would he ?

    And if he’s still the Senator, why the rush ?

    Is it so the appointed guy will have seniority over the elected one ?

    1. The newly elected Senators and Representatives get orientation time; replacements rarely have the same flexibility.  Having a replacement for Salazar lined up and oriented for immediate swearing-in on the 20th, or whenever the confirmation votes happen – I don’t imagine they can actually confirm the appointment until Obama is actually in office – seems like a good move to me.

      Democrats will have enough pain with the whole MN Senate race mess – which, BTW, had an official declaration of a 50 vote margin for Al Franken today…
