  1. the irony here is obvious; owens wanted the tabor fix addressed in a year that wouldn’t effect republican candidates, and now we have every candidate — announced or not — commissioner candidates included, having to qualify where they stand.

    it makes me think that owens should have stuck with the original deal — no fix without looking at amend. 23, too.

  2. Poor gov has a poor memory.  The governor and a large coalition of virtually all Republican legislators-including Andrews, Spradley, Young, Owen, Wiens, and Mitchell–to name a few–consistently supported addressing the structural problem presented By the recession and the fact that TABOR through its “ratchet effect” prevents the budget from ever recovering in the good years.  The “changes” in Amen. 23 at the time were only cosmetic, a face saving way for the legislators to pretend they were really addressing 23.  So now a conservative five year De-Brucing is agreed to by the gov, Republican legislators and Dem leadership and guess what?  Stengel and others pretend they never saw it before.  The fact is that $400 million will be cut from the non-Medicaid and non-K-12 budget next year and the Republicans opposing the compromise are going to wish it had passed as the Post, News, Sentinel, Coloradoan, Tribune, and Herald ask a very pertinent question in an election year–what is your plan for the cuts after we get rid of the arts council?

  4. Nice Try – the grab is too large, unspecified, and doesn’t address the real problem of the mandated spending.

    The gov should have had the courage to step away form the negotiation back in March. Shame on him.

Not only was it a nice try, but it was factual.  The problem TABOR has–and other states and Barry Poulson of the Independence Institute clearly recognize–is that TABOR does not allow a state to recover from a recession.  By De-Brucing for five years we fix the ratchet which Poulson, Norquist and others advise other states to do automatically.  So the question is why are Norquist, Poulson and the Wall Street Journal supporting efforts in Kansas, Ohio and California which have an automatic ratchet fix, but opposing Colorado’s effort–allowed by TABOR–to do so by a vote of the people?

  7. Try as you may – the fix needs to be comprehensive. Even ordinary ma and pop understand our mandidated spending is the problem. The tabor vote is true in it’s intention, but shortsighted and – again – too large an increase.

    We elected a solid man to be our conservative harbor in the tax-n-spend tempest, and he somehow lost his way, himself.

    And on that very first day of the Colorado Legislature, our Republican Officials were TOLD the fix would be a real and sincere effort that would cross the isle. C & D aint that.

  8. “Shortsighted and too large an increase”…Even when we pass C an D Colorado’s spending over a decade will still be well below what TABOR would have allowed, except for the revenue loss caused by the recession.  The fact is that Owens is a conservative who vetoed 47 largely Dem bills–but he understands TABOR needs to address its one structural flaw, or this will hurt the Republican Party every year until it is fixed.

New subject:  Has Colorado ever had a serious candidate for Governor as strange as Marc HoltZman?  Does his “suspending” his campaign mean we won’t see George Foreman barbecuing for John Elway and the President of Poland outside the RV after all?  And can Laura Teal confirm whether the marriage is on or off or whether this too was simply made up as was the Nancy Reagan endorsement?  My guess is that Bob Ewegan is right in today’s Post–“Holtzman barely weighs in at the gerbil division.”

    If I were an Advisor for the President, I would be actively working
    on a plan to remove our dependence on foriegn oil.  I would not necessarily believe that this would be the eventual plan utilized (better safe than sorry) … but, it could be a real bargaining chip
    with those countries in the Middle East, since they would be forced to consider all the “money” they will lose in the process.  Indeed, it could intimidate these radical terrorists, forcing them to think, “Ooops, the US is not going to spend their wealth here anymore and we are just goiing to dry up in the desert.”

    Indeed, we could use economic pressure with the suggestion that we have plans (B and C, D) that will utterly allow their society to be forgotten by the Western world — if
    that is what they want.  In a very few days, you would likely see a response from the Arab world.  They would say, “No, we want to work with the US, we need your help.”  From a pyschological standpoint, the Bush Administration just doesn’t get it and has gone about this all wrong.  NO one likes to be forced to do something … they (people) want to believe that they are making these choices.  It is a matter of “saving face” and ego. 

    BUSH HAS WAY TOO MUCH EGO, and is otherwise a blind fool for his reactions by waging a very unwise conflict.

    The Conservatives may want to ignore this issue, but they can’t and I am not going to ignore it.  I don’t want more terrorism in my country or anywhere else, and I have a right of “Freedom of Speech,” just like Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and all the people of this country, no matter what anyone says …

    I don’t know what history book you’re reading, but the last time I checked, the Republican Party “switched” and today is the “Demcratic Party” … as you should read in history books, Abraham Lincoln was a steward of creating equality in this country, especially for the blacks in our country, something that hardly the REPUBLICAN PARTY can attest to supporting today.  Nice try.

  26. Practically nothing … except they hired Ms. C. Rice with her educational background, and her experience in the oil business to promote this “idea” of using a “filter” of removing Saddam from power (because he was sending uranium from Africa to make a nuke, “which was a lie, ie. WMD) with the purpose of getting the precious oil (for increased oil production) and to turn Iraq into a free country.  Well, the only problem with this idea, is that the President lied to the “people of America” and the world, and has placed our men and women into “harms” way, without the support of Congress and the people, and has killed over 100,000 innocent Iraqis. 

    IF WE, the people in United States of America, would have known the truth, and IF the UN would have also known the truth, maybe, we would have continued the inspections and saved the lives of all of our more than 1,800 men and women, who were also told lies in the process.  Lying to the military for the benefits of gain in oil Iraq, democracy in Iraq, and creating hatred against America, is pretty much dispictable, and criminal. 

    But, I am not keeping count on this Administration and all the lies they have made.  Someone tell me how many lies thus far???

    The fact that its headquarters would be in New York showed the US commitment to the project and its desire to be a leading members.

    So, indeed, how much damage has this Administration done to our friends overseas now???  Way to go Mr. President.

The Republicans NEVER try to help anyone … they just revel in their power and money.  They are so against what Jesus said, it is amazing that it has taken this long for America to wake-up.  And, the Republicans NEVER had any concern for the black people of this country.  Anyone who is disadvantaged, they walk on … and, enjoy doing it.

    I have a feeling, you would likely act just as you did with Cindy Sheehan … you would say, “so who is the fellow we should honor?”  Well, Mr. President, it certainly isn’t you.

    Er, except when we passed the Civil Rights Act over a Democrat filibuster, only to watch Democrats release dogs and firehoses on blacks across the South. Then there was the crazy “Emancipation Proclamation” thingy. First black Senator in the modern era? Republican. Bull Connor, George Wallace, Orval Rubus? Democrats. Ask Grand Wizard Byrd: He rambled for 14 hours trying to stop blacks from voting. A black preacher in the upper midwest (Michigan, I believe) recently filed a class action lawsuit against the Democratic Party over exactly this issue. Frankly, cushy white Democrats have no more place, if as much, speaking on race issues as any white Republican.

    So, indeed, how much damage has this Administration done to our friends overseas now??? Way to go Mr. President.

    Rwanda, Srebrenica, Iraq, Sudan, North Korea, Congo, Cambodia, Haiti… If these massive UN success stories are representative of “our friends overseas”, good riddance. Glad Kofi and friends got a chance to make a billion or so off the blood of a half million innocent Iraqis before we got involved and shut down their little racket.

  33. HonestAbe reminds people of the past glory of the Republican Party.

    Unfortunately, Abe, while you were taking your dirt nap, all the things your party used to stand up for have been abandoned.  In 1948, when President Truman supported that there Civil Rights Act (Truman was a Democrat by the way…), all those Southern Democrats who tried to block the bill seceeded from the Democratic party, became the Dixiecrat party headed by Strom Thurmond, and eventually decided to take over the Republican Party.  The folks in your party decided you didn’t really mean it when you said that in a choice between man and money, man had to win.  And all the good work done other Republicans: Theodore Roosevelt on monopolies and land preservation, Dwight Eisenhower on recognizing the dangers of the military-industrial complex – your party has abandoned them too.  So don’t feel too offended – your party has abandoned all that it stood for.

    Fortunately for you, Jefferson’s Democratic Party has continued to change, and it now continues to support all of the best parts of those things you held dear.
