Armed guards accompany Halliburton layoff announcements

In a scene eerily like Black Sunday–the seismic day of the oil shale bust when Exxon laid off 2,000+ workers in a single day, today’s announcement by Halliburton that it is laying off dozens of workers was made as numerous armed guards stood by.

The Daily Sentinel is reporting:

But as workers arrived at Halliburton’s Grand Junction offices today, at 32 and D roads, many employees were told their services were no longer needed. Halliburton had a contingent of armed security guards on hand, greeting employees as they arrived. A Grand Junction police officer was also stationed nearby. Some who were laid off were upset by the show of force, but they also said they understood the reasoning behind their layoff.

Halliburton blamed the economy and hoped the layoffs weren’t permanent.

I’m no fan of Halliburton.  But it’s troubling that people are losing their jobs, so much collateral damage from an industry intentionally slowing production to drive up prices.  Mesa County foreclosures are now among the highest is the state.

This is the consequence of a boom and bust economy, as Halliburton implies in their reported statements.  Rather than use it as an excuse to gut regulations (which COGA the CO Senate Republicans are likely right now preparing their next ‘news’ release on) it is instead an opportunity to properly plan for the next round which surely is imminent just as soon as companies idle enough rigs and workers to drive up prices.

  1. Breaking from the GJ Sentinel:

Crews working to contain 3,000-gallon condensate spill in Rifle

Hazardous materials crews are working to contain about 3,000 gallons of a highly flammable natural gas condensate that spilled when a tanker rolled north of Rifle this morning.

The accident happened at a curve in the road at the intersection of Colorado Highway 13 and Railroad Avenue, the main road that runs through the city.

The liquid ran down the gutters of Railroad Avenue into the city’s storm drainage system, but officials say they think they were able to close the drains before the liquid entered nearby Rifle Creek and drained into the Colorado River. As a precaution, though, authorities notified downriver communities who divert water out of the Colorado for drinking water.

Rifle Police Chief Daryl Meisner said businesses between 21st and 24th streets on Railroad Avenue were evacuated and authorities made reverse 911 calls to advise residents of a neighboring subdivision to stay indoors.

    1. The important thing to remember (at least through tomorrow’s discussion of HB-1292) is: “We don’t need no stinkin’ new rules.”

      Oh, and “Trust us.”
