A Day of Democrats: The State Party Re-Org

  • by: Dan Willis

(Significantly less entertaining than the Republican Party reorganization – promoted by Colorado Pols)

In a word: no real surprises here.

On March 8, the State Party Re-Organization meeting of the Democratic Party took place at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver.

There were no real surprises:

All five of the State party ofifcers were re-elected, without being challenged:

Chair: Par Waak

1st Vice Chair: Dan Slater

2nd Vice Chair: Margaret Atencio

Secretary: Carolyn Boller

Treasurer: Butch Hicks

We created a new party initiative: The Labor Initiative. They join the following existing initiatives: African-American, Latino, Disabled, Education, Women, Stonewall (LGBT), Progressive, and the Young Dems.

There was an attempt to introduce some rule changes and that created the only controversy of the day. Ultimately, a motion to table the changes was passed so even the necessary logistical changes were left unpassed. That part was sad.

The main controversary was over a plan to reduce the number of alternates elected to the State Assembly. Since the central committee chose to not act on this issue, they have effectively removed themselves from the process. Now that decision will be left to the Delegate Selection Plan. Oh well, they had they chance.

There were also several multi-county Judicial, Senate and House Distict Re-Orgs going on and 6 of the 7 Congressional Districts did their Re-Orgs. No controversaries (that I heard of at any rate) from any of them.

I did get elected Vice-Chair of CD1, btw.

  1. The 18th Judicial District re-org elected our officers without issue.  We then extended the Executive Committee to include reprsentatives from counties other than Arapahoe and Douglas. Now Lincoln has representation too.  This is to give the lightly populated counties a voice in candidate searches and decisions.

              1. she was agreeing with you — the Dems had plenty of drama after, as David put it, “knocking it out of the park” the last time.

So what’s with the Politburo-like reaffirmation this time?

    1. Sorry, I don’t know anything but what I hear from Rush. And for the next ten and a half hours, I won’t know what to think. I just hope Rush says the same thing today as he’s said the past three weeks every day every five minutes, otherwise I confuse.

      You socialist!

    2. Initiatives are groups within the party that target a portion of the population and work to inform and involve that population in the political process. It also serves to bring issues that are specific to that community to the fore front of the greater party.

The current initiatives of the Colo Dem. Party are:

      Latino Intiative

      Federation of Women

      African-American Initiative

      Dems with Disabilities

      Progressive Dems

      Labor Initiative

      Stonewall Dems (LGBT organization)

      Education Initiative

        1. Let’s see… I’m a straight, white guy, Democrat, and I own my own business. And I am a member of the Latino Initiative and Labor Initiative. I have also attended events for several other Initiatives. I know, I know… This inclusiveness thing is hard to understand for some people.

          1. I.       The purpose of the Labor Initiative of the Colorado Democratic Party is to:

            A.     Promote the labor movement by fostering cooperative and coordinated action

between unions and the Democratic Party by doing outreach and recruitment.

            B.     Educate about issues that improve the quality of life for all Americans.

            C.     Work with businesses and other organizations on political issues and projects that support working families.
