WADHAMS RE-ELECTED

(Let it be ever so, say Dems: long live The Dick – promoted by Colorado Pols)

UPDATE: Leondray Gohlston is elected Vice-Chair on the third ballot

Colorado GOP Chairman Dick Wadhams was re-elected today with about 80% of the vote. Tom Stone recieved the other 20% and Christine Tucker dropped out and endorsed Tom Stone at the last minute.

Tom Stone was first to speak. Christine then followed and talked about youth in the GOP and how bad the GOP does at bringing in new people. Dick Wadhams talked last and had more then two people speak for him unlike Tom and Christine.

Candidate Drops Out

Between being handed a Tom Stone for Chairman card and the end of her speech, Christine decided she had to do what she thought was best for the party. Christine said at the end of her articulate speech that she’s sorry, but can’t run for Chairman because her candidacy will split votes and we’ll be stuck with a liberal. She then endorsed Tom Stone and said to vote for him instead. Tom and Christine shaked hands while the entire delegation was in shock.

However in the end Dick Wadhams was re-elected. He spent a lot more money on this campaign than any other chairperson. He has rally signs being passed out and stuck to all the walls, he had volunteers passing out stickers and buttons.

Wadhams spoke mainly on how he paid off the debt and now we really can do something. I guess people thought that if you run for party chair on the platform of someone running for President then they’re worth voting for.

  1. Bill Ritter, Cary Kennedy, Bernie Buescher, & Michael Bennet would all like to extend their deep & heartfelt appreciation to the GOP for doing what is best for the state, regardless of how it hurts the GOP.

  2.    I knew my closeted friends in the Log Cabin Club were supporting Wadhams, but I didn’t know that it would be such a sweep.

So Turner actually said that if she stayed in the race, she’s split the vote and they’d be stuck with a liberal?  These folks are delusional. All she would have done was shave off a percentage point or two from Tom Stone’s 20%!

As far as Wadhams’ claim that he paid off the party’s debt, IIRC the California GOP, knowing damn well that they have no chance of electing anyone statewide since the Governator is term-limited, threw some $$$ to the Colorado GOP.  Isn’t that how Wadhams retired the debt?

Don’t get me wrong.  I still think Dicky is exactly what the state deserves and needs, but he shouldn’t be taking credit for a gift received from Arnold Schwartzneger.

That said, Wadhams does have a couple of accomplishment about which he could crow about.  First, under his watch, the GOP reclaimed H.D. 40.  (On the other hand, pay no attention to the GOP’s loss of S.D. 26.)  Second, under his leadership, Bernie Buscher was thwarted in his attempt become House speaker. Third, Wadhams managed to hold on to C.D. 6, and all it cost the GOP was the S.O.S.’s office.

The GOP needs to amend its party rules to allow the state chair to serve a ten-year term!

          1. who is running for Governor or Senate or something is really and angry old man. Really, if you want to win votes at least don’t frown.

I think Josh Penry can win a primary though…the delegates went wild for him and he actually is a pretty good speaker. Colorado may hate him, but the GOP will nominate him

  3. They would all get fired from American Furniture Warehouse.  Ironically enough, they wouldn’t have a union to protect their jobs.

  4. Surely there’s at least ONE Republican who reads and comments on ColoradoPols who can explain why re-electing Dick Wadhams was the right thing to do for the party.

      1. Even Wadhams will be able to make hay from the mess that we’ll have.  Much like the Dems were able to do with Iraq.

As soon as those tax checks increase along with the welfare rolls, a dog will be able to direct the opposition.  The pendulum will swing naturally, with a little help from big government.

        1. you’re saying Penry for Governor? Beauprez for Senate? Give me a break.

I’m not necessarily talking about Congress or the White House–in those categories you might have a point.

Here, I don’t see the Democratic brand going away anytime soon. Wadhams’ re-election has sealed that deal.

He’s a proven loser, and the Republicans here have now embraced said proven loser as their hope for the future. Good luck with that.

Welcome back by the way. You sticking around? It’s been way too easy to pick on Skeptic and Libertad. We need a challenge.  🙂

        2. These cycles are much greater than a few elections. Bill Clinton notwithstanding (and his moderation being part of the pattern), we just completed a 25-30 year cycle of conservative hegemony in American politics, which in turn followed a 45 or so year cycle of liberal hegemony. Only a complete fuckup on the behalf of President Obama (who needs to get Congress in line, and fast IMO) can change that.
