Anybody know how MH’s event went last night?
I saw it on the news, but that was about it. Seems like it got about as much attention as Both Ways Bobs big announcement.

It is disappointing when a teacher for a public school pushes his personal agenda on students that HAVE to be there. What the hell does his dislike of Bush have to do with Sophmore High School Geometry?

I heard his speech. And I have heard some of his previous students. This apparently has been going on since they hired him.
How could anyone defend this dick.

A teacher needs to teach, not make political statements trying to sway youngsters toward either the left or right. Those kids have plenty of time to make up their own minds if the want to be a conservative, moderate, or loser.
Boy did I have a few teachers who could use the Bennish treatment. But as a rule it’s a bad idea to inflate high school kids’ sense of superiority, which media coverage always does.

I wrote this over on Soapblox and I’ll say it here: Teachers are held to a higher set of standards when voicing their personal views and rightfully so. Would anyone be as equally outraged if this had been a teacher suspended for espousing right wing bullshit?

It was a geography course. There you go again….why do you assumne it’s a dislike of Bush? What I heard was a dislike for the policies of this administration that lead to unnecessary and illegal wars and violence, and are hypocritical on the world stage regarding WMD. Word on the street in Jeffco is that Stan Matsunaka, former president of the CO Senate and big-name Perlmutter supporter, has been lurking in the halls of the Jefferson County Courthouse asking questions about Peggy Lamm and the inquiry into her residency.
Is this Lamm thing so high on the Perlmutter priority list that they send the biggest fish in their pond to talk it up without caring that it’s transparent? You’d think Ed would use an anonymous “damn college kid” to do his dirty work like everyone else.

As warned, Western Slope folks are taking the surface rights initiative to the voters.
This does not bode well for Democratic candidates from legistlators to John Salazar.
Why? A lot of people involved with the initiative (and we’re talking about Garfield, Delta, Mesa, LaPlata, Montrose, etc–and even Weld) are the GOTV grunt workers for the Democratic Party. If these Dems are out promoting and financially supporting the intiative, they won’t be out working for the Democratic candidates.
Plus, many “U’s” and “R’s” who agree with the Western Democratic view of surface rights may not so prone to vote “D” like they did in 2004 if nothing’s been done for them by the Democratic controlled legislature.
The Democratic powers that may be in the legislature should listen to the “little guy” on this issue (get real people, the oil and gas industry will NEVER support Democrats in the upcoming races) and put the language back in Curry’s bill to protect surface owners.
The intiative will then go away and the worker bees will return to the hive.
PS: This is a good time to see Cheney’s energy policy at work on the West Slope….there are over 25 gas rigs going up along I-70 and the Colorado River between Rifle and Parachute right now. It almost looks like Las Vegas at night!
Landowners may tap ballot for drilling compensation

Fed up with the legislative process, a group of citizens said Wednesday they will take their effort to get landowner compensation for oil and gas drilling to the voters.
The group, Colorado Landowners for Fairness, announced its intentions and registered with the state as an official ballot-question campaign committee this week, it said.

Emma Anne, FYI, He’s a Geography teacher. If you you read the transcript, his commentary didn’t have much to do w/ Geography. It was an excellent history lesson, though. I pretty much agreed with every point he made. Unfortunately, it was also pretty damned inappropriate for a bunch of high schoolers.

Two highly classified intelligence reports delivered directly to President Bush before the Iraq war cast doubt on key public assertions made by the president, Vice President Cheney, and other administration officials as justifications for invading Iraq and toppling Saddam Hussein, according to records and knowledgeable sources.
The president received highly classified intelligence reports containing information at odds with his justifications for going to war.
The first report, delivered to Bush in early October 2002, was a one-page summary of a National Intelligence Estimate that discussed whether Saddam’s procurement of high-strength aluminum tubes was for the purpose of developing a nuclear weapon.
Among other things, the report stated that the Energy Department and the State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research believed that the tubes were “intended for conventional weapons,” a view disagreeing with that of other intelligence agencies, including the CIA, which believed that the tubes were intended for a nuclear bomb.
The disclosure that Bush was informed of the DOE and State dissents is the first evidence that the president himself knew of the sharp debate within the government over the aluminum tubes during the time that he, Cheney, and other members of the Cabinet were citing the tubes as clear evidence of an Iraqi nuclear program. Neither the president nor the vice president told the public about the disagreement among the agencies.
When U.S. inspectors entered Iraq after the fall of Saddam’s regime, they determined that Iraq’s nuclear program had been dormant for more than a decade and that the aluminum tubes had been used only for artillery shells.
The second classified report, delivered to Bush in early January 2003, was also a summary of a National Intelligence Estimate, this one focusing on whether Saddam would launch an unprovoked attack on the United States, either directly, or indirectly by working with terrorists.
The report stated that U.S. intelligence agencies unanimously agreed that it was unlikely that Saddam would try to attack the United States — except if “ongoing military operations risked the imminent demise of his regime” or if he intended to “extract revenge” for such an assault, according to records and sources.
The single dissent in the report again came from State’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research, known as INR, which believed that the Iraqi leader was “unlikely to conduct clandestine attacks against the U.S. homeland even if [his] regime’s demise is imminent” as the result of a U.S. invasion.
And trillions of dollars and thousands of lives later, this abysmal failure of this administration is still being defended by the shills like Voyageur, Gecko (It’s your president!), and BMR. Or, have you changed your mind? Let’s get it on!

I’ve never liked Duncan Hunter, the California Republican who is chairman of the house armed services committee. He was an over the top vocal proponent of this misbegotten Iraq war from the start. But when he said Thursday he would try to scuttle a Dubai-based company’s effort to manage U.S. ports, he salvaged his reputation slightly, as lawmakers’ from both sides of the aisle continue complaints about the Bush administration’s handling of the issue continued to spread.
“Dubai cannot be trusted,” said Rep. Duncan Hunter, normally one of the administration’s most trusted allies. He called the United Arab Emirates “a bazaar for terrorist nations” and asserted that the United States should not permit DP World to take over significant operations at six U.S. ports.
“I intend to do everything I can to kill the deal,” Hunter said.
This is just wonderfully, deliciously, horrendously bad for Bush. We’re finally seeing an outright mutiny by Republicans on the Hill. And realize that the mutiny is because the members are being blasted by the folks at home. In other words, the American people are finally speaking up because they’re made as hell at the Bush administration, and senior Republican members of Congress are being forced to act.
This is amazing. We’re finally seeing Bush’s incompetence come to roost. Halle-fracking-lujah.
Not surpisingly, the bravely running away one is willing to pander to and exploit the most brazen anti-Arab bigotry if it fuels his psychotic hatred of George Bush in particular and America in general. Face it, if this foreign country were Sweden, or, in Robin’s case, North Korea, he wouldn’t worry about foreigners running our ports.

Having not heard the entire lecture, nor knowing the background about this teacher’s classes – supposedly, kids actually take his classes because his classes stir up controversy… – I won’t pass judgement on Bennish’s class. But I will ask this: haven’t any of you had a high school history course that covered critical analysis? It is precisely this kind of debate that high school kids should be exposed to before facing the Real World.
