From Weird to Weirder in Mesa County

  • by: Colorado Pols

The controversy within the Mesa County Republican Party just gets weirder and weirder. From the Grand Junction Sentinel:

The same mystery group that recently chastised Republicans who supported a Grand Junction Democrat?s 2004 legislative bid is now calling for the resignation of Mesa County?s GOP chief. The Colorado Republican Caucus mailed a letter Thursday demanding Mesa County Republican Party Chairwoman Lois Dunn step down for ?dereliction of duty.?

Dan Green, the caucus? so-called grass-roots coordinator whose real identity remains a mystery, in the letter accuses Dunn of lobbying Mesa County District Attorney Pete Hautzinger, a Republican who formerly headed up the Mesa County Democratic Party, to investigate the caucus.

Hautzinger called for an investigation into whether the caucus? first letter attacking Republican activists on the eve of the party?s precinct caucuses might have broken state law regulating political campaigns. The first letter, distributed in anticipation of the GOP caucus last month, vilified Republicans who supported Democrat Bernie Buescher two years ago when he defeated Republican Shari Bjorklund for the District 55 seat.

Green in the second letter charges Dunn with conducting ?her own political vendetta against our members.”

“Draw your own conclusions about whether she has a pattern of attacking Republicans and defending Democrats,? he writes.

Hautzinger said Dunn never asked or suggested his office probe the caucus. The fact Hautzinger?s name appears in the caucus? second letter ?could be inferred as an attempt to create a conflict of interest, which is very artful,? Hautzinger said.

Dunn said the timing of the letter wasn?t lost on her. Mesa County Republicans on Saturday hold their assembly, a county-level convention that can affect elections by determining which candidates can appear on a primary ballot and the order in which they appear. ?They?re probably doing it to cause all the trouble they can right now,? said Dunn, who added her accusers didn?t merit a response. ?I don?t even care,? Dunn said. ?We don?t even know who Dan Green is. I don?t believe in responding to anonymous stuff.?

Attorneys for the Colorado Republican Party filed a cease-and-desist order Thursday demanding the Colorado Republican Caucus stop affiliating itself with the Republican Party, terminate its name and any other use of ?Republican? and shut down its Web site. The group?s Web site, http://www.cogopcaucus.com/, is registered through a Chesterbrook, Pa., subsidiary of a company in Karlsruhe, Germany, that for a fee masks domain owners? identity.

  1. Both quotes form the website:

“At the Colorado Republican Caucus, our position is clear:  Who you vote for in the polling booth is your business.  But who you support publicly may become ours.”

    and

“Loyal Republicans have spoken through their caucuses, and less than one third of the 51 turncoats who supported the Democrat in 2004 were re-elected by their peers,” said Grassroots Coordinator Dan Green, adding, “I call that progress.”

Damn!  Dan Green is going to be yelling Zeig Heil! here pretty soon.  Either that or he is Himmler reincarnated.  Does anyone know if the latter statement is true?

  2. Hmm – registering through a service that anonymizes Domain registrations, eh?  Now there’s honest politicians for you…

Good for the State Party to follow through on the trade name violation I remarked on the other week.

  3. Speaking of making anonymus political statements, I’m sure Phoenix rising is your real name.  All the bravely outspoken political pundit wannabes who frequent this site hide behind a screen of anonimity.  What hypocrits!

  4. “All the bravely outspoken political pundit wannabes who frequent this site hide behind a screen of anonimity. What hypocrits!”

    Well said, Mr. “Anonymus”

  5. Pompeius magnus and Anonymous calling other peopel “hypocrits” for not using their real names.  HOOOOOOOOO–HOOOOOOOOOOO.  That is the funniest posting of the day. Ya gots ta love em.

  6. Phoenix–your “linky thing” still doesn’t disclose who you are.  Although as an anonymous photographer, I must tell you that you are talented.

  7. Funny, no one seems to be addressing what the letter said: That a Republican Party Chair appoints and re-appoints Democrat supporters. I’m sure the press’ take would be much different if some Dem Chair was elevating Republican endorsers.

  8. Mesa County Republican Party Chairwoman Lois Dunn gave the letter to District Attorney Pete Hautzinger and asked him to research the possibility of infractions to campaign finance laws.

Hautzinger said Dunn never asked or suggested his office probe the caucus. The fact HautzingerΠ²Π‚β„’s name appears in the caucusΠ²Π‚β„’ second letter Π²Π‚Ρšcould be inferred as an attempt to create a conflict of interest, which is very artful,Π²Π‚Ρœ Hautzinger said.

Sounds like back peddling to me…  Wonder if they are worried about something…  hmmm

  9. Virtue and Light: You’re probably right if the party’s were reverse it would be more news worthy. The Dems fight amongs themselves over who is more progressive but rarely call each other Republicans or Republican supporters. Although it does come up from time to time in more GOP-dominated areas.

One notable exception was in 2004 when HD2 (one of the most Dem districts in the state) had a Dem primary and the guy who petitioned on to the ballot was wholely financed by Republicans like Alex Cranberg and Hank Brown. To make this story even more fitting, that candidate, Waldo Benavidez, is now Marc Holtzman’s treasurer, but still registered (as of Feb.) as a Dem.

ON the flip side, the infighting over who are GOP and who are RINOs has become a nearly daily event and so does not register as particularly news worthy. The Mesa County issue may include an element of criminal activity, hence the DA’s involvement, so there s a bit more new about it out there.

  10. The only criminal activity may be the DA’s use of this letter to conduct some kind of witch hunt. He claims to have his “top investigator” on it, but the group says he’s never even called or emailed. So who HAS he called? Did the DA lie to the press about the investigation, or are they just using it to investigate political enemies?

    How bout the following?

Group attacks Mesa County GOP leader

By Danie Harrelson The Daily Sentinel

‘Hautzinger said Dunn never asked or suggested his office probe the caucus.’

Sounds like the Grand Junction Senile has earned its nickname.

  11. I have seen that letter. It’s all over Mesa county – people are photocopying the thing!

It makes some serious accusations, but backs up every one with a quote from the Sentinal. Though that may not be the most reliable source, as it seems now.

It does not say ONE THING that the Sentinal says it does. Maybe that’s from the press release that was forwarded all over the place by this group, but the Sentinel flat-out misrepresented what they had.

At this point, maybe we’ll just get a new chair and put this ugly thing behind us.

  12. Speaking of mystery groups, who is behind Coloradopols? A bunch of cowards and liars who otherwise work in the Denver news media, who think they have found a way around federal election law?

Nope. YOU have been reported to the Federal Election Commission.

  13. Hey Majority:

Anonymous letters actually DO have a long history in this world. Many of the great men of letters espoused new ideas and exposed truths that the dominant political culture didn’t want exposed.

    All under a pen name.

Sounds like that political culture thing has never been more true of a place than Mesa County, 2006.

And even if ColoradoPols is a bunch of spoiler libs and media boys in housedresses…

Tattletales like you are what’s wrong with politics – not money, and certainly not free speech. Little Himmlers support the diametrically unconstitutional McCain-Feingold too.

  14. Regardless of who Dan Green is – his message appears to be clear.  If you publicly support Democrats you shouldn’t be a hypocrit and run to be a leader in the Republican Party!

What is complicated or slanderous about that?

Also, if you are active and public in supporting a Democrat – you could be called a “Democrat Activist.”

Having said that, I don’t believe Dan Green should be hunted down like a wild dog.

But, rather he should be drafted!!  Drafted because he dared to state the obvious!

Drafted because he is a great American.

Drafted because he and his few letters stirred the “festering” pot of good ol boys in Mesa County.

Thank God for great Americans like Dan Green who can stand at a distance and notice what every one of us in Mesa County are afraid to say…

“What the H*LL is going on in Mesa County!”

If you or anyone in the Corrupt Mesa County DARE speak out – they will come and get you.  AND if you have the audacity to live in Denver then “BUTT OUT”.

    http://www.gjsentinel.com/news/content/news/stories/2006/04/08/4_9_1a_GOP_Denver_Dan.html

You are treading on The Sentinel’s sacred ground.

So keep your eyes peeled…  We NEED GUYS LIKE DAN GREEN.

Keep an eye on the SOS for a new “shady” committee called “Draft Dan Green for Governor.”

Dan Green – whoever you are.  God Bless you and your family.
And God Bless America – I am talking about the rest of America that happens to orbit Mesa County.

  15. Maybe Mesa County Reps should have kept quiet and voted for Bernie, but when a candidate supports Eastern Slope Reps for leadership positions and falls into ‘Beyond Wingnut’ status, more action is warranted.  Desperate times call for desperate measures.

  16. Here, here, Hostage! NOT ONE person has seriously contradicted the veracity (that means truth, for and RINO/Dem posters) of this “evil” letter.

What, is it all about Western Slope pols getting leadership positions? Please tell me what percentage of the population lives in Mesa County. And if people like Penry are the best you have, a guy who votes OK but sleeps with the enemy, good luck getting anywhere in leadership.

I love how no one is willing to define “beyond wingnut” status – I bet it is the same set of criteria that would get a real conservative elected anywhere but in Mesa Countty. Excepting the very few, there’s nothing but political  eunochs out there!

  17. Western Slope leadership positions are important precisely because we have a population disadvantage. It gives us a little more presence at the table for important issues like water diversions.

To achieve true Wingnut status, one must not simply be pro-life or against gay marriage, as good people can disagree on these issues.  It must include a good dose of intolerance, bigotry, ignorance, and religious zealotry and the attempt to bring these “values” into the political process.  Examples of Wingnuttiness:

Ariel Sharon’s stroke was a punishment from God for giving up some of Israel’s territory.

America’s support for Israel is based on fulfilling God’s biblical prophecies

Katrina was God’s punishment for New Orleans’s decadent lifestyle

    Intelligent Design is science

Aids is God’s punishment for Gays

    Tinky Winky is gay

These exact examples may not have been championed by the candidate in question, but if the Mesa County Republicans perceived they had a Wingnut hybrid candidate who did not support the Western Slope Rep for leadership, they may have felt they had no choice but to publicly jump ship.

PS: If you hold to one of more of the above listed beliefs, you may be a Wingnut.

  18. First, Tinky Winky IS GAY!

Second, if you don’t think Intelligent Design has some significant scientific merit, YOU are the extremist.

But most importantly, you, like most libs, artfully dodged my question. Name one thing Shari  Bjorklund – who let’s face it, that’s who we’re talking about – said from your ridiculous list.

Quit BS’ ing me, I don’t have time for lightweights.

  19. Did you read my post?  I didn’t say Shari held to these beliefs.  I’m not from Mesa County, so I don’t know exactly what beef the R’s had with her. I was merely theorizing that Mesa County R’s felt they had to support Bernie because Shari was a Wingnut who supported Ted Harvey instead of Al White.  Am I correct in my theory or not? If not, please tell me why you think they bailed on her. I’m all ears.

Intelligent Design is not science because it can’t be tested by experiment, doesn’t generate any predictions and proposes no new hypotheses, key ingredients needed to be called “science”.

PS: Tinky Winky is not gay, that is a “man purse” he carries.

  20. All you wingnuts,

Get this through your thick, don’t-know-when-you’ve-lost-and-it’s-time-to-move-on skulls: Shari lost because she was a horrible candidate with a horrible personality and a total lack of political skills, as is evident in her recent behavior and her firing from the Beauprez and the Penry campaigns. You lost last time around. You lost this time. You will always lose. Get a clue and crawl back into your caves.

  21. You are a simple person. And angry, I might add. Look at you own post, and the name you chose! Thanks for proving my perennial assertion that lefties are always the mean-spitied intolerant fools, despite their attempt to paste conservs as such.

What do you mean, “you lost this time.” Where? What planet are you referring to?

Tell that “you will always lose” crap to Mike Kopp and Scott Renfroe in SD 13. Big tent my @$$ – right wingers like me ARE the base of the Republican party, which, last time I checked (and despite their ALMOST total idiocy nationally – versus the Dimowits’ ABSOLUTE idiocy combined with being wrong on every issue) IS IN THE MAJORITY ALMOST EVERYWHERE.

Your post STILL doesn’t address what I said earlier. I don’t give a crap about Shari Bjorklund’s campaign.

As for GarcoRep, you are changing the subject about WHAT makes a “wingnut.” Stupid labels like that make you libs easy targets everywhere BUT Mesa.

HAHAHAHAHA! That’s really funny!!!!! If you think Al White should be in leadership over Ted Harvey, please go away like a nice Deaniac.

While I try and refrain from ad hominem attacks, you have opened that door by attacking Bjorklund for no good reason – so here goes.

I invite you to my cave for a good, old fashioned @$$-whooping. And bring your wife so I can drag her around by her hair. Oh wait, yours has one of those butch-feminist ‘dos. Never mind.

  22. Sam:

Prior to this post, I was with you in what I thought was a good spirited debate.  Now you seem to be twisting off in some mad rant.

Instead of cave fighting, let’s try this again, why did the Mesa County R’s bail on Shari?  You live there, so you tell me.

PS:  National polls show Republicans favor McCain and Guliani for President, hardly Wingnut candidates.

  23. I was simply responding as an actual cave man to show how ridiculous poeple like the poor sap three posts prevoius look when they call people names.

Now, I will try not to be condesending here, but McCain? Giuliani? Surely you jest. Those polls are meaningless. Liberal types like that will NEVER get anywhere in our nominating process. If you look at those polls to which you refer, they are either one or a combo of a) self-identified R’s (not reliable); b) not likely voters (not reliable) c) definitely not likely primary voters (not reliable), etc, etc.

No one who is not at least mostly supportive of the 2nd Amendment and strongly pro-life will get anywhere.

McCain is the single most destructive force in politics. I don’t care how popular he is, the hardcore base HATE his positions. Also, he’s not a very stable or nice person, and will crack under the pressure. War hero is not a automatic pass for ANYTHING, Republican OR Democrat.

As for Bjorklund, a big reason is that Mesa County Republican Party is riddled with libs. They are unique to begin with probably a less evangelical Christian base, and when you add the fact that Western Slopers have an inferiority complex and a huge chip on their shoulder because of it.

Always, it’s about proving to the Front Range that they can’t be pushed around – it’s pathetic. You don’t see that kind of spitefully nose-severing defiance in say, Baca and Washington County.

And the point of “Mr. Green” and the Colorado Republican Caucus should not be lost. Mesa County GOP is run by Democrat sympathizers and “old-boy network” types. That alone can make seats go Democrat.

  24. I’m glad we are out of the cave, it was getting scary in there.

You are correct when you say Guliani and McCain will never get through the nominating process.  The far right has done an excellent job of dominating that process.  My point is that the majority of Republicans in this country are closer to the Mesa County Repubs in ideology, and would prefer a Moderate candidate. McCain is the only Republican that consistently beats Hillary in the polls, admittedly a lot can happen between now and 2008, but it is compelling. A far right Christian conservative will likely win the nomination, disenfranchising many Unaffiliated voters and Moderate R’s.  If Hillary successfully swings to the middle, we could be saying “Hail to President Clinton” all over again.  Something to think about.

I am sorry Shari got caught up in some ugly politics, but my guess is either her politics or personality rubbed too many people the wrong way, and they put their opinions into action.

  25. I disagree with your premise that it is “far right” to be:

    Pro-2nd Amend.
    Pro-life
Anti-tax/gov’t growth (something Bush is going to paqy deartly for with his base)
    A Christian
    Traditional marriage only
    Etc.

When you boil it down, more Americans agree with what you call the “far Right” (see above) than people like Kerry/Dean/Democrats, who are in demographic hell for the foreseeable future. They OWE THEIR EXISTENCE to groups who are no longer able to bring them to a majority, and in fact alienate most Americans: “Sharpton” blacks, unions, homosexual lobby, etc.

Personally, I’d be happy to see Hellary in the White House. Conservatives would  sweep in a la 1994, and she’s get away with a lot less than W has on things I hate, like surveillance, spending, and immigration/amnesty.

And I guarantee she is megalomaniac enough to get in trouble with her policies and tactics to do long-term damage to the liberal agenda. Ahhh….the thought of it. My gosh, the fundraising possibilities with her as a candidate!

The Republicans have had the world handed to them and screwed up, because it’s just human nature to take things for granted when you don’t really have to fight for them anymore. I loved DeLay until he said, “we’ve cut all we can cut.”

You watch – the R’s will flip Bush off and run tot he right, conservative challegers will score upsets this summer and win in the fall.

BTW Bill Clinton signed 7 of 10 COntract with America items. He also won BOTH TIMES with less of the vote than W had last time, and with less of the vote his first time than W had the first time.

  26. I don’t think Penry is the problem…  Smith is hardly the conservative candidate in the race.  I didn’t see Penry’s name on a list supporting Democrats.  Let’s stick to the subject!

Further, I’d be surprised if any of the Democrat Activists are put front and center on Penry or Beauprez’s campaign.  That would be suicidal.

In Mesa County we have a bunch of people who have irrational hatred toward a person they have never met.  As for Al White vs Ted Harvey…  both endorsed Shari.

Lastly, if you look at the Democrat’s bylaws in Mesa County – you are automatically terminated from leadership if you come out and support a Republican.

  27. One more thing.  Garco Rep.  Al White has a race of his own against a Democrat in November.  If there is no distinction between he and his opponent he may very well lose his seat.

My hope is that he will embrace ALL the people in his party to get behind him and help him win.  If he ignores or insults the people he needs to help him win then we may lose yet another seat to the Dems.

  28. Sam I Am:  It will be very interesting to see if you are right.  There is a lot of anti-Republican blather going on right now and Bush’s numbers keep going down, so November could be dicey.  I think you are right about it being good for Reps if Hillary wins.  Could set the stage for another Newt type Revolution.  Regardless of our differences on social issues, I think you and I can agree on the need for some REAL fiscal restraint and permanent tax cuts.

Mesa County Hostage:  Do you know anything about White’s opponent?  Is he viable? Well known?  I haven’t heard anything about him in Garfield County.
