  1. Virginia is for Democrats!

It looks like Northam is winning by the same margin by which HRC carried Virginia last year. I guess Gillespie's use of Trump tactics had the same result as they had for Trump.

    1. Nevertheless, I foresee more racist appeals. Consolidating the old-white-guy vote is about all they've got. If not, where else are they going to get votes?

What I haven't seen is how those old-whit-racist break down across the electoral college. Worst case, we win the popular vote "bigly", but demographic cross-tabs still produce significant wins for Republicans in rural Southern & Midwestern states.

        1. As far as I can tell, the cultural sorting seems to continue. White people moving to white areas. Younger, multi-cultural people moving to the cities.

          On the positive side:

Old white racists are die-ing off

Hispanic population is growing rapidly in Texas, Arizona, Georgia, Florida, and even mid-Western states like Illinois & Ohio.

The racist appeals and immigration over-reach are turning an entire generation of hispanics into strong Democrats, and the anger is turning them into voters.

          Go Dems!

      1. He just needs to hang in there until after Murphy is sworn in. In the event of a conviction, they need to delay sentencing.

To paraphrase Mitch McConnell, "We need to keep that seat open. The results of the election should determine who fills it."

      1. For those scoring at home, Virginia SOS shows Dems leading 50 and Repubs leading 50 with almost all counted. In one, the Republican leads by 12 votes. Can you spell recount?

        1. Before Recount, there are outstanding absentee and provisional ballots. VA-HD-94, the district with the 12 vote margin, could actually flip to the Democrat even before the recount. Expect the final outcome to take a while.

In case you're wondering, there is no tie-breaker in the Virginia House of Delegates. If it winds up at 50-50, they have to figure out how to share. That might be challenging given how hard the Republicans fought for their late lamented 66-34 majority.

      2. Looking more like 50-50 at this point but a huge swing none the less.  The encouraging trend is women winning against incumbents.  These women are going to have an impact on Virginia politics.

        1. Call it the Harvey Weinstein effect. Remember the batch of women elected to the US Senate in 1992 in the aftermath of the Clarence Thomas hearings?

      3. Sometimes a wave election can flip a Gerrymandered legislative map.

Let's say you try to maximize the number of seats for your Party by assuming that 6% (for example) is a safe margin. If the wave election is 7%, suddenly all those "safe" seats fall at once.

Historically, the suburbs may have tended to be Republican, but post-Trump that rule is flipping. So, in VA the Republicans thought they have some reasonably secure seats in suburban areas. Suddenly those are within the 7% anti-Trump swing.

The Western part of VA is pretty red, and that is precisely where the race baiting is working, but also where Republicans are wasting votes; i.e. pushing white supremacy themes gains you more rural votes but that doesn't help you in the swing districts.

  2. We're pretty damned happy about Question 301 here in Broomfield. It looks like several new anti-frackers will get elected to city council as well.

    Suck it, Bill Owens.

    Suck it, Denver Post.

    Suck it, Don Beezley.

Suck it, O&G industry. That piddly 500 grand y'all spent to beat this question didn't quite cut the mustard, did it now?

  3. So Gillespie lost because he didn't embrace Trump tightly enough…..

You hear that, Mike Coffman, Scott Tipton, George Brauchler, Mitt Romney's nephew, and George Bush's cousin?

You need to follow Tank's example and embrace the darkness!

  4. Virginia election results hold the national Trump-era trend of a Dem +9-ish boost. Be scared, Republican office-holders; now may be a good time to look towards the exits politically.

NJ-02 Rep. Frank LoBiondo decided today was a good day to step back. So did TX-02 Rep. Ted Poe. And Martha McSally is leaving her AZ-02 seat to run for the slightly redder AZ-Sen seat held by retiring Jeff Flake.

    1. It’s easy to hold office when the president will veto all of your crazy bills.  Not so much now, governing is hard.  I think some are coming to grips with that.

      1. I'm thinking you are going to be seeing more red retirements in the offing and the indictment season is just starting.  Leave or get thrown out are pretty limited options.

      2. The Republican electorate is shedding moderates, especially in the suburbs. The Party has become so extreme, that you can't win without catering to the Trump racists and the Christian authoritarians.

Not to mention the generational shift, as old-school GOP retirees who made up the majority of the party in the 1970s, 1980s & 1990s, are finally "aging out" of the electorate.

In the last 20 years, the WWII generation has been replaced by the Baby Boom generation. Baby Boomers include the stereo-typical, College Educated DFHs, but it also includes a lot of more traditional 'Muricans, and tea-party types. The 1960s were more split than your drug-hazed memories would like to have it.

The very liberal generations are the ones following the Baby Boomers.

        1. It was very strange waking up to a Dem victory night and being happy about it.  Hopefully the GOP abandons Trumpism so that I can go back to being upset when such things occur.

            1. I'm very much aware that Trump has the 2020 nomination sown up unless Mueller can deal a fatal blow.  Huge reason why I am in "exile" from the GOP for time being.

(and again, I am a libertarian who used to, pre-Trump, lean GOP for important races, not a member of the GOP myself)

          1. It's OK, Elliot. You are welcome to be happy about Democratic victories as long as you wish. You can go back to being glum when we have repaired the damage Trump & Co have done to our institutions.

  5. The blow outs in Douglas County are an eye opener.  Ding Dong DeVos is done peddling her Christian Madrassa alternative to Douglas County parents.  The anti-voucher candidates will gain control of the Douglas County school board.  Big changes coming to a deep red school district.  Trancredo has got to be having heart burn over those outcomes.

  6. You know who we're not hearing from are the Bullshit Boys with their hysterical belief that this is all Fake News and Repubs are really winning every race.  Not a peep from the pervs.

  7. Fort Collins is getting broadband fiber! Yay!.

We have city owned electric utilities, and we pay 20% less that the State average.

This part of the state may be mighty-whitey, but it's also greatly-greeny.

  8. The JeffCo and DougCo school board races are both great news.

Even in the deepest, darkest, reddest parts of wild untamed DougCo, people appear to finally be plenty fed up with these clowns that want to destroy public education and use taxpayer monies to fund their private madrasahs.

  9. It has been a very good night! Not only did Danica Roem win the Virginia legislative seat, but Minneapolis will getting its first trans councilwoman. Seattle gets a lesbian Democrat as mayor.
And, while it's far from here, it looks like marriage equality has won in Australia. For a day that sucked so hard because of the weather, it's finished off fabulously.

    1. Way to go, Aussies!

At this rate, soon the only places that will oppose marriage equality will be the Islamic theocracies, Russia, and Alabama.

        1. I still think this is Roy Moore's to lose……although I also don't underestimate his capacity to blow it.

I don't see him dialing down his rhetoric. I see him doubling down on it. This is a guy who gave up a seat on the state supreme court – twice – because he was so fixated on his twisted views that he couldn't follow the law.

Doug Jones could do for Democrats what Scott Brown did for Republicans in early 2010.

It's nice to see Bob Bentley is still getting his name in the newspapers.  🙂

          1. There is going to be a huge focus on Alabama now.  Republicans are going to have to spend mightily and embrace a truly awful asshole to win that gimme.

  10. There was even a welcome surprise in Mesa County. Voters approved a county sales tax to fund the sheriff, DA and 911 center with small shares to municipalities. Also passing were a long-over due school bond and mill levy override. Could the tea party grip be loosening?
