As The Associated Press reports, President Obama’s message to the nation’s schoolchildren today wasn’t really that big of a deal. Not like any rational person thought that it would be, but, you know:
President Barack Obama steered clear of politics Tuesday in a pep talk to students that sparked controversy among conservatives, who accused him of trying to indoctrinate America’s children.
Presidents often visit schools, and Obama was not the first one to offer a back-to-school address aimed at millions of students in every grade. Yet several conservative organizations and many concerned parents warned Obama was trying to sell his political agenda…
…In his speech, Obama challenged the nation’s students to take pride and ownership in their education – and stick with it even if they don’t like every class or must overcome tough circumstances at home.
“Every single one of you has something that you’re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer,” Obama told students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia and children watching his speech on television in schools across the country. “And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is.”

Even the minority kids?
I’m sorry, the President’s anti-racist politics have no place in red-state Nutvania.
I’m going to go find some kids right now so I can prevent them from hearing anything else from this divisive Nazi pinko anarchist-monarchist racist antichrist LIBERAL LEFT LESBIAN LOLLYGAGGING LIPOSUCKING cough pant where was I? what were we talking about again? was it something about charm bracelets?
Oh yeah, WON’T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!!
This was handled well all along. Give the blathering right enough rope to hang themselves, then watch them do it. You can scream about socialist indoctrination all week right up to the speech, then when nothing of the sort is in the speech you look like the idiot you are and people stop listening to you.
My guess is that the
racistsnutjobs will just say he changed his message because of their “pressure.” I most sincerely hope I’m wrong on this.I take comfort in the fact the conservatives are out there fighting for us everyday, bravely vanquishing all of those evil, imaginary conspiracies that only they can see.
The schools in my hometown of Berthoud opted to not carry the speech to protect the children from evil, presumably.
Honestly, when I was in school I could take or leave these Presidential speeches, they didn’t make any kind of lasting impression on me at all. George H.W. Bush’s speech didn’t ‘indoctrinate‘ me into unrestricted free-market capitalism, and fundamentalist Christianity.
Whether the speech itself was ultimately important or not, I still feel pretty ashamed at my little burg that they caved into pressure from the Glenn-Beckers. It makes our town seem like we’re a bunch of extremist wackjobs.
Their approach is just plain scaring people, the President needs to take back control.
He really missed the principle that education is a lifelong process.
Not that you would know.
grab your blanky and hit play for the backyardigans
People aren’t scared by what the Obama Admin is doing. The Admin hasn’t done jack yet. People are scared because they want to be scared. They want to have a tribal bogeyman to be scared of. They want there to be an apocalypse coming. I don’t know why all this is, but it seems like human nature, unfortunately. This is not rational fear born of legitimate crisis, this is irrational panic. Seeing Obama as some big two-headed monster come to eat our children is plainly absurd.
During the Bush years, when the terror level was at orange (placed there by Tom Ridge, who says he was pressured to increase the threat level before the election for political reasons) and we were being deluged with scare tactics from the right on everything from homeland security to Iraq, it worked on a lot of us. Personally, I bought into the whole “Iraqi WMD will kill us all” talking points from the Administration hook, line and sinker. I was genuinely still scared of seeing a re-enactment of 9/11, but with bioweapons, and I believed the government when they told us invading Iraq would lessen the danger.
But, like many of my fellow citizens, I wised up fairly quickly. I started to notice when the Republicans were using these kinds of scare tactics to advance their political agenda. I stopped drinking it down unquestioningly, and started thinking for myself.
I think there is a sizeable minority of Americans who do in fact want to be scared. These messages from the GOP are directed at them. I like to think, however, that the majority of people have wised up like I have, and can now tell the difference bwteen something they should really be scared about, and something that’s just trying to get them to be afraid for no good reason other than to secure a political advantage.
and the media naturally gravitates toward extreme positions, no matter how small are the numbers holding them
oh, and (not for you, for everybody):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…
What a ridiculous thing, even for you, to say.
Adams County middle schools “opted out” of showing a speech delivered by the President of the United States…….expressly for the students!
The President of the United States. Banned from the classroom.
Unbelievable. And up to now unthinkable.
I understand the idiotic conservative fringe’s motives. Fight him at every turn. Play up his ethnicity….”He’s not one of us”. “He’s a socialist”. (as if any of you conservative meatheads even know what a socialist is. Or the definition of the word). No, it simply doesn’t matter what he does, the right extreme, which now includes the vast majority of republicans, will oppose this President, in every thing he does. Call it what you want. Cutting off your nose to spite your face. red over right. Bottom line, you lost, you won’t accept it and you’d rather see this nation divided and failing than even TRY a progressive path.
Fuck you libertad, and anybody that condones the President being treated this way. You are who you are. libertad, I’ve read you enough to know that you’re the worst kind of slimy racist…..The kind that won’t even admit your motives are just that. It makes you a racist AND a coward. You’ll never change, and you’ll die hating anything different than your tiny, narrow minded ideologal world.
But when narrow minded snakes pressure schools to ban a speech by the Predident of the United States, the birthers, deathers, teabaggers, tenthers, preppers, and basicly the red anarchists, win.
When teachers and administrators cower and shake at the prospect of being “confronted” by conservative nutjob parents, who could care less about their kids, but would rather push their hate agenda, we lose as a people.
The villains were surely the extremists that forced this censureship.
The cowards were any and all in the school systems that let it happen. What a crock.
I certainly didn’t serve my country and risk my life in combat so many years ago to watch my President banned from the public school system in Adams County.
Shame on you, you miserable cowards.
I know. I knock the doors. True, some of those doors have some pretty far right folks behind them, but there are plenty of progressives here as well.
Having seen it, I’ll agree the speech was nothing special, save one one point, something all the kids of a town like Berthoud should have heard:
Until we get the next generation to pull its head out of the sand on the fact that opportunities are NOT equally distributed in this country, nothing will change. Am I calling for indoctrination? You bet! But as the line above notes, indoctrination comes in many forms–including willful ignorance.
Right here in River City. Babs O’Brien and the educational entrepreneurs are lobbying for big bucks to “address the problem of minority achievement gap and drop out rates.”…big bucks will mean big salaries; big conferences, big offices, facilitators; PowerPoint presentations, big time big time.
Meantime, over in North Denver, the football field at North High School is loaded with potholes and kids are being injured because of the bad condition of their athletic fields and equipment. The minority kids at Smiley Middle School are shown in a classroom “sweltering in the heat.” Where are the air conditioned rooms??
Where is the shame?
What the repubs use their right wing for is to interact with the base….right wing parents were able to protest, to actively keep their children home and to be reinforced in their beliefs….
These people do not feel foolish, they feel vindicated….wait til you see the gigiantic mobs on 9.12.09…
I thought you guys were all supposed to be politcally savy….idiot savants or something….don’t you know anything about political organizing????
It is a shame you missed the sixties…this kind of stuff won the vote for the 18 year olds and stopped the
draft…..
Rent “A face in the crowd”…..pay someone to leave Glen Becks’ mikes on when he thinks he is off…
Where are all the bloggers spinning the personal responsibility theme outlined by the President?
The final draft & delivered version of this speech sure was odd compared to the “lesson plan” that instructed students to write about how they would support the Presidents agenda. You know the lesson plan that the administration put out last week, then modified over the weekend.

That tale just keeps growing in the telling, doesn’t it?
… is that the protest forced the President into revising his original, oh-so-sinister draft of his remarks…
Now radical Democrats in DC are forcing him [aka the Administration] to re-address nearly every other piece of HR3200.
psst the President doesn’t write his own speeches
IS this another one of those “randomly puled out of your ass” sources? The one that exists next to your invisible friend?
