A press release from Rep. Dave Young of Greeley today positions him as the anointable frontrunner in the Democratic primary for Colorado Treasurer in 2018, announcing a potentially field-clearing bevy of endorsements from some of the biggest Democratic names in the state:
Congressman Ed Perlmutter explained why he is endorsing Dave Young, “Dave has taught Colorado students for over 20 years, and he knows firsthand that Colorado needs to do a better job funding our schools. I am supporting Dave for Colorado State Treasurer because he will advocate for increased public education funding and key investments to support the next generation of Coloradans.”
Governor Bill Ritter said, “I am proud to endorse Dave Young for Colorado State Treasurer. Dave will work to increase transparency at the Treasurer’s office so Coloradans know how their taxpayer money is being spent, and work to ensure our tax dollars are invested wisely.”
Former Congresswoman Betsy Markey added, “I am strongly supporting Dave Young for Colorado State Treasurer. Dave has a record of standing up for middle class families, rural Colorado and progressive policies at the state legislature, and will continue do so as State Treasurer.”
In addition, Dave has gained the endorsements of Rep. Jeni Arndt, Rep. Jeff Bridges, Rep. Janet Buckner, Rep. James Coleman, Rep. Jessie Danielson, Rep. Daneya Esgar, Speaker Mark Ferrandino, Rep. Mike Foote, Rep. Joann Ginal, Rep. Millie Hamner, Rep. Chris Hansen, Sen. Rollie Heath, Hon. Josie Heath, Rep. Edie Hooton, Rep. Dominique Jackson, Sen. Daniel Kagan, Sen. John Kefalas, Rep. Chris Kennedy, Sen. Andy Kerr, Rep. Pete Lee, Rep. Susan Lontine, Rep. Barbara McLachlan, Rep. Dafna Michaelson-Jenet, Rep. Jovan Melton, Sen. Dominick Moreno, Rep. Dan Pabon, County Commissioner and Former House Minority Leader Sal Pace, Rep. Brittany Pettersen, Rep. Dylan Roberts, Former Sen. Pat Steadman, Rep. Tracy Kraft-Tharp, and Sen. Nancy Todd.
Dave Young stated, “The response to our campaign message of increased transparency, accountability, additional funding for education, and reprioritizing investments to help the middle class has been overwhelming. I am honored to have the support of so many Democratic and progressive leaders throughout Colorado and look forward to continuing to share our campaign message throughout the state.”
Such broad support would seem to do it from our vantage point, although Rep. Young won’t be alone in the Democratic primary with Bernard Douthit and most recently Charles Quin Scheibe, longtime state CFO who was originally appointed by former Democratic Treasurer and 2018 gubernatorial candidate Cary Kennedy also in the running. With that said, today’s endorsements definitely position Rep. Young as the candidate to beat.
And yes, one other would-be candidate in this primary no longer rates a mention. It’s not an oversight.

Can Lebsock roll out any endorsements? Maybe from Democratic luminaries such as Harvey Weinstein, Larry Flynt, Anthony Weiner, and Elliott Spitzer?
Wow, I guess Lebsock was right about political motives!
"Not everything Steve Lebsock does is evil"
I guess you need to protect Randy Baumgartner, Jack Tate and Donald Trump.
In the world of Moderatus, only Democrats caught in embarrassing situations are to be blamed. I suspect the Mod still loves Roy Moore.
Wrong. I'm saying that Colorado Pols obviously favors Dave Young, and that would help explain why they spent so much time attacking Lebsock.
Didn't Colorado Pols lean heavily against Andrew Romanoff in 2010? They've been pulling the wool over Democrat eyes too….don't be fooled…..
So, are you saying the women that have accused him of sexual misconduct are lying? Yes or no.
For die-hard Republicans (like Moddy) it's only misconduct if Lebsock didn't score.
Dave Young had to have had inside information that shit was about to hit the fan for Steve Lebsock. So Dave Young was all prepared to jump into the Treasurer's race – yet not honest or respectful enough to send a representative for his campaign to our NE Colorado Secretary of State/ Treasurer forum on Oct 27.
Thanks, Dave, for showing how much respect you really have for rural Democrats.
I don’t think that’s necessarily true. It’s not at all uncommon for pols who’ve expressed interest, or even just thought about running, privately, to go through a process of cajoling from others and introspection before deciding to run. You may have just missed him by a few days.
Whatever. Young registered as a candidate on 10/30/17, according to TRACER. I read Young as oh-so-careful and calculating. He has some anti-fossil fuel industry votes and bills, but hasn't pissed off the O&G industry in Frack City Greeley, nor come out against the coming 24 well project planned next to the low-income Bella Romero K-8 school, however much he "knows education", and "cares for children".
I see no admirable qualities in Young not also present in Bernard Douthit, who did show up and take questions at the forum. I'll vote for the Dem nominee, whomever that is.
Everything you just said can be true, and may well be, without Young having had "inside information" on Lebsock and using that to his political advantage. I think that's a particularly crass allegation.
I don’t know Dave Young from Adam, but the fact that Steve Lebsock is a serial offender and among the worst of the legislative abusers with a history of inappropriate behavior doesn’t hardly appear to now qualify as “inside information,” . . . and even if it did, so what?
There will likely be another forum, maybe even more than one, within a day’s journey by horse, or steam locomotive, or some other of those new-fangled conveyances, even in those most remote and inaccesssable hinterlands around Greeley, I’m sure.
Dave came to Gilpin County for our candidates forum and I was impressed at his humbleness and competency.
Please remember these candidates have regular jobs and lives in addition to campaigning. The campaign season is a grind so cut him a little slack if he didn't make it to a forum focused on a different office. It looks like Dave's staff consists of himself.
