Colorado is on the radar for Democratic resistance to gerrymandering. Holder and Obama's National Democratic Redistricting Commission is on the case. Colorado should really have an 8th US House seat, due to population growth.
Fair Districts Colorado (FDC)
is the group that wants to minimize the impact of the Blue Wave by increasing the power of unaffiliated voters. FDC has 5 fricking initiatives for the 2018 ballot.
Eric Holder on Maddow recently, talking about the NDRC's work:
“People want to save our democracy”.
Your link to the initiatives isn't working. Can you otherwise summarize?
I fixed the link to the Denver Post article, which summarized FDC's 3 ballot initiatives as of September, 2017. From Brian Eason's article:
Anschutz' paper, the Gazette, also has a pro-FDC article, promoted on FDC's website.
Pols had this take on FDC's crusades, posted not long ago. They called the redistricting effort "Smoke and Mirrors".
The Democratic critique of the FDC proposals is twofold: 1) that the process for appointing "unaffiliated" commissioners for the redistricting group is itself flawed and partisan, and 2) deep suspicion of the makeup of the Fair Districts group itself, being comprised primarily of libertarian and Republican operatives.
For example, there are no voter advocacy groups on board, such as Common Cause, Mi Familia Vota, or other civil rights groups. League of Women Voters is listed as a “coalition partner” with FDC. However, leadership of the LWV is divided on support for the redistricting initiatives, and when filed, LWV will not be listed as an endorser.
No other civil rights groups have gotten on board. It’s worth asking why not.
The 5 initiatives can be found on the Colorado General Assembly website. Here's the text to #95 and #96, #69 , #68 and #67
OK. thanks.
👍👍👍👍
"Minimize the impact of the Blue Wave" – is that what you want to call the actions of a group whose previous efforts seem to have favored Republicans?
Yes, PR, I think that FDC's redistricting efforts are strategic. They're conceding that they exist in a time and place that favors Democrats this year, and are trying hard to minimize Democratic gains. If the FDC initiatives pass, it won't help elect Republicans to statewide offices or CD4 in 2018 midterms, but it may help the GOP in 2020.
If they can appeal to Colorado's unaffiliated voters with a supposed "bipartisan" plea, they are more than happy to make that case. And yes, it is supposed to help Republicans, or at least the Republican agenda.
It hardly matters if there is a D or an R in front of legislator names, if the policies that are allowed to pass are favorable to say, pharmaceutical, finance, or oil and gas industry interests. It will help for Statehouse control, of course.
Don't get me wrong – I will work for Democrats in 2018 and 2020. But I will work for the most progressive candidates possible, because they will work for the most progressive policies possible.
How much snow are y'all getting? We have about 4" so far on the eastern plains.
In Leadville we just hit 4" more than 5 hours after you
If looks, on radar, as if we're going to only have another 2 hours or so tonight. Looks like you may still have 3-4 hrs
Now looks like yours has ceased
Yup, the snow has stopped for now. Bitterly cold, though.
Channel 7's reporting 8 inches at the station, which is half a mile from us. But it’s wet, bloppy stuff so I think a lot of it’s melting rather than accumulating.
Bloppy snow will do that…😁
And did I mention that it’s colder than a well-digger’s ass out there?
Republicans are slowly and steadily stripping away the social safety net so we can keep shoveling cash to the 1%.
And though treating the less fortunate among us is part of what makes/“made” America great, we somehow keep increasing the Pentagon’s budget while strangling the rest.
🙁
Adopting, internalizing, and transmitting Republican Economic and Budgetary rhetoric is a key Democratic FAILURE of the last several decades.
Colorado Senate GOP put up a high quality video, "Under the Golden Dome" touting their sponsored legislation. Lots of funny head shots of the Nevilles, Lundberg, Marble, Grantham, Sonnenberg, and Baumgardner.
My question: Why don't Democratic legislators put up a video like this that celebrates their accomplishments? Or do they?
And for the Republicans: Why aren't you celebrating and promoting your Americans for Prosperity Colorado lobby day, with the free box lunch, and all the fixins?
Perhaps Grantham, the Nevilles, Vicki Marble, Ray Scott, Lori Saine, and all the crew don't want you to know how much they will owe to the Koch brothers when all is said and done.
