What's up with Colorado Pols?

  • by: Sharon Hanson

Is Colorado Pols fair and balanced? I wonder this sometimes as I recently went through all the threads related to Romanoff and Bennet and noticed to my chagrin that only favorable Bennet posts made it to the front page and only unfavorable posts for Romanoff made it to the front page.  So I did a little research to see if what I was saying was in fact true and it does appear that Colorado Pols should explain why they are so favorable towards Bennet and so derogatory towards Romanoff.

And this does have consequences as those of us who have been reading Colorado Pols for awhile can attest with the Tom Tancredo and Bill Winter campaign.  Colorado Pols consistently and relentlessly slammed Bill Winter for his campaign strategy. In hindsight the election may have had a different outcome if Colorado Pols had been less critical. Bill Winter took 40% of the vote in arguably the most conservative district in our State. I don’t have the numbers but my guess is that it was the best showing ever for Democrats in that district.

So what say you Colorado Pols?

  1. they made me sign a pledge, in blood no less, that I will only FP diaries that are either favorable to Bennet or negative to Romanoff.

But, as my term is nearly up, if you write a diary that I think is FP material–in my sole discretion–that happens to be critical of Bennet, I will consider posting it on the Front Page.

WARNING: Fake interviews and Bennet=Lieberman probably won’t do it.

  2. It did not trash Andrew Romanoff one bit in fact it said some flattering things about him, too).  It did not make the front page.

I’m getting tired of all the hate… from the tea partiers and the radical left.

I am proud of my President Barack Obama, proud of my Governor Bill Ritter, proud of my Senators Mark Udall and Michael Bennet. They are on the mark far more often than they are off the mark.  To criticise the ten percent of the time I do not agree with them is pointless.

Instead, LET’S TALK ABOUT VOTE-PURGER, CHANGE-THWARTING, HATE-SUPPORTING COFFMAN OR SCHULTHIES, shall we?

  3. but I have to say, the lack of organization in his campaign has made it difficult to have supportive stories that are front page material.

It truly saddens me to say that, but it is the truth.

      1. I have a job where I have to be very careful what I say puiblicly and politically. Therefore it would not be a good idea for me to write a “vote for my guy” diary. In fact I have probably already stretched my toe over the line farther than I should have.

So I will leave it at my support for Andrew is rooted more in my personal friendship with him. We have been friends for a lot of years, since before he entered the state house.

        1. I just think he needs to rework his campaign, and step it up quite a bit, if he expects to gain traction.  I think some of his more, ummmm, vehement supporters on this site do him more harm than good.

  4. David Sirota is not exactly known as a Bennet supporter. He’s been pretty pro-Romanoff each time I’ve heard him speak (or at least very pro-primary).

  5. All I’m saying is that it appears that Bennet is getting a lot of favorable publicity even when his policies are not always in line with Democratic principles.

  6. The fact that this diary hasn’t been deleted undermines your claim substantally. There is no blog more tolerant of different points of view in Colorado, I happen to agree that Romanoff has done very little to deserve getting on the front page more than he has.

Try writing a “What’s up with Square State?” or “What’s up with People’s Press Collective” blog on their sites and see how long it stays up.

  7. haphazard campaigns I have ever been witness to. And I say that as a Winter supporter, volunteer and contributor to his campaign. He blogged his way through it instead of getting out and knocking on doors and introducing himself to the voters in his district.

If you really mean what you suggest here,

In hindsight the election may have had a different outcome if Colorado Pols had been less critical.

then your credibility is zero with me. You’re really going to blame a fucking blog for his defeat? Try talking to your candidate who spent more time on Daily Kos than he did on the phone getting votes.

  8. But the giant bias is an anti-Republican bias. They also have it in for Jared Polis.

On Bennet vs Romanoff I think it’s more just accurately reporting what’s going on – the Romanoff campaign is a train wreck and you can’t spin it into anything else.

In other words, you’re shooting the messenger. If you want to help Romanoff then stop trying to blame others and get him to take a realistic look at what he’s doing vs how he needs to campaign.

    1. The ‘anyone who dare criticize AR’s handling of his campaign in considering who they might support in the Primary, or in wondering if he can win a General, is part of a Bennet/Lieberman conspiracy’ meme.

I don’t really see that helping Andrew too much.  It makes his supporters look deluded and bitter.

  9. We’ve been tough on Bennet before, and favorable towards Romanoff. But there’s no denying the reality of the poorly-run Romanoff campaign. That’s not bias – it’s just the way it is.

We appreciate that you think we have enough pull to sway the results of a congressional campaign, but we aren’t the reason Bill Winter wasn’t elected in 2006. Quick fact: Winter was the ONLY major candidate in Colorado in 2006 who didn’t go up on TV, despite the fact that he raised plenty of money to do so. That’s a bad campaign any way you slice it.
