"GOP Fuzzy Math Calculators" Set Session's Tone

  • by: Colorado Pols

Tim Hoover writes for the Denver Post’s new state politics blog The Spot:

Liberal group ProgressNow Colorado delivered a special, furry gift to each Republican lawmaker at the Capitol on Wednesday and wants to give GOP gubernatorial candidate Scott McInnis one as well…

Michael Huttner, founder of the liberal political activist group, said in a statement the calculators were “to help them (Republicans) with their ‘fuzzy math’ during the legislative session.” He said the group planned to deliver a jumbo calculator with fur to McInnis, who Huttner said won’t say how he’d cut the budget.

“He has been disingenuous from the get go,” Huttner said. “He continues to take cheap shots but refuses to give specifics as to what he’d do instead. We are looking for him to deliver this fuzzy calculator to help him sort out his fuzzy math.”

Sean Duffy, McInnis’ campaign spokesman, called Huttner’s move a “stunt” that made light of the Republican candidate’s efforts to boost job creation, and thus, ultimately increase state revenues.

“There is very clear math, and the clear math is that hundreds of people in Colorado every day lose their job,” Duffy said, adding McInnis wanted to make the state more friendly to aerospace and energy companies . “They (Democrats) can focus on the government side of the agenda. What we’re focusing on is the jobs side of the agenda.”

As for balancing the budget itself, Duffy said McInnis is still working out the details of his plan… [Pols emphasis]

Our picture above comes from Progress Now’s release, which we’ve reprinted after the jump. We heard these “fuzzy culculators” shed white fuzz everywhereMike Huttner should consider a follow-up gift of lint rollers, maybe labeled “Democrats clean up the GOP’s fuzzy math mess?”

Fuzzy Calculators delivered to Capitol, McInnis flees to Colorado Springs avoiding tough questions about his “plan”

Denver–As the Colorado General Assembly reconvenes today, ProgressNow Colorado delivered fuzzy calculators to Republican leadership to help them with their “fuzzy math” during the legislative session. The group also is looking to deliver a jumbo fuzzy calculator to Scott McInnis, who is rumored to have traveled to Colorado Springs on the session’s opening day, avoiding questions about the Colorado budget.

“We are not surprised that McInnis is avoiding answering questions about the Colorado budget; he has been disingenuous from the get go,” stated ProgressNow Colorado Founder Michael Huttner. “He continues to take cheap shots but refuses to give specifics as to what he’d do instead. We are looking for him to deliver this fuzzy calculator to help him sort out his fuzzy math.”

A month ago, McInnis dodged a chance to explain what he would do to balance the budget. (KUSA, 12/10/2009; “McInnis being coy on budget”, Denver Post, 12/14/2009)  At that time he claimed over and over he couldn’t get his “hands on the budget” so he’d “have to wait to see how it comes out.” (DP and again in Longmont Daily Times-Call, 12/12/2009)

“We call on McInnis to be truthful with the people of Colorado on his plans for our future,” stated Huttner. “Santa even delivered the latest budget to him for Christmas, and still he refuses to tell us what he’d do differently.”

On Wednesday, December 23, ProgressNow Colorado delivered a copy of the state budget to Scott McInnis’ office. (Denver Daily News, 12/28/2009)  Yet aside from repealing FASTER, McInnis has not given any details on how he will balance the hundreds of millions of addition dollars needed other than vague statements about “waste, fraud and abuse.”

“What’s ridiculous is that McInnis can’t offer specifics when asked how he will govern,” noted Huttner. “The people of Colorado deserve better.”

ProgressNow Colorado delivered fuzzy calculators to Republican leadership this morning during the first day of the 2010 Colorado General Assembly and is planning to deliver the jumbo calculator when he returns from Colorado Springs.

  1. Few things please me as much as the irrelevance of a progressnowcoloradodumbstuntimmediatelyfrontpagedatpols-eventhoughnobodyoutsidethisblogcouldcareorwillevenbeaware-

    thatiteventookplace.

  2. On food for families who are out of work, aid to the homeless or donating calculators to students in need.

The concept is probably lost to Huttner and his followers; could it be it’s because they’ve never been there?

    1. It is way past time Mr. McInnis begin telling us what he will do with our money. So far all he has said is he will repeal FASTER, replace the $250 lost by the repeal with other general fund money while simultaneously increasing spending for higher education. If he actually did that, I want to know what his early release policy is going to be for prison inmates because the Department of Corrections budget is the only place where that amount of general funds exists. His first stab at the budget will require releasing around 40% of Colorado’s prison inmates.

Mr. McInnis has all the information he needs to tell us how he will budget our tax dollars and he has had it for months. I suspect he can’t be reasonable on the budget and still hold on to the Tea Party votes. Therefore, he is obfuscating about the budget.

Second, his campaign spokesman said Mr. McInnis is going to concentrate on bringing more aerospace and energy jobs to Colorado. How is he going to do that?  His spokesman said Colorado is loosing more and more jobs everyday. Apparently, Mr. McInnis is unaware of the fact the Colorado economy began creating more jobs in October. Colorado increased the number of jobs in October by 1,000 and in November by 1,800. Of the two candidates, Mayor Hickenlooper is the only one who has any hands on job creating experience.

Mr. McInnis needs to answer the questions about how he will spend our money. The editorial boards of the Post, the Grand Junction Sentinel, the Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph and the Pueblo Chieftain have all asked him in editorials to respond. Its time.

    2. On food for families who are out of work, aid to the homeless or donating calculators to students in need.

The concept is probably lost to McInnis and his followers; could it be it’s because they’ve never been there?

So Ellie, when will Congressman McInnis donate his campaign funds to the needy?

      1. and I have no idea if we would hear about it.

Those of us that can afford a few $$’s for Scott’s campaign can afford to send to Haiti relief I’m sure.

I’m heading to my Red Cross chapter office today.  How about you David?

        1. and I have no idea if we would hear about it.

Those of us that can afford a few $$’s for ProgressNow can afford to send to Haiti relief I’m sure.

We’ve made a donation to the Salvation Army. It is not marked for Haiti because they still have needs elsewhere and I trust them to apply it where most needed.

Thank you for volunteering at the Red Cross. I understand we won’t see any additional reply from you today as you will be down there.

    3. Oh Ellie, there is ALWAYS a better and more important thing to do with money.

For example, if McInnis was truly concerned about the welfare of humans, he would stop asking for campaign contributions and instead ask all his supporters to contribute $1050 to the Red Cross in Haiti. McInnis would then declare that rather than spend money on political consultants and plastic signs and other gewgaws, we will contribute the remainder of his cash on hand to Haiti humanitarian needs.

Everyone has to make their own priorities. If McInnis chooses to prioritize bumper stickers over the rebuilding of Haiti, he can expect that will influence my vote in November.

Is the vacuity of your “concept” still lost on you?

        1. I was just snarking Ellie’s comment above. In other words, it is always possible to identify a “more worthy” cause.

Thus, Ellie’s type of argument is really an argument to do nothing about road or higher education or health care or energy or government efficiency or AIDS or open space or … (you get the point) … because there is always something else that should be done first.

  3. the republicans are going to campain on something akin to FDR’s “New Deal”… A slogan/rallying cry… without any pre-election substance.

Still counting upon the ignorance/gullibility of the electorate. eh republicans?

      1. As you’ve pointed out many times, elections are referendums about the incumbent rather than the challenger.

Of course, now that Ritter has dropped out, McInnis will have to run against the ObamaPelosiReid boogeyman. Then again, there really isn’t anything else to run against if you’re going to honestly campaign on issues.

          1. But the substance of what you say is correct, of course.

Every Dem in the country ran against Bush in ’06 and ’08 and it worked. And it didn’t help R’s that there were a string of scandals ala Abramoff, DeLay, Cunningham, etc., that tilted against R’s.

So I fully expect that R’s will run against D leadership (or lack thereof) during the present economy. That’s politics.

But now McInnis isn’t running against Ritter. And has been pointed out here relentlessly, McInnis has thus far failed to offer an alternative and a lot of his message is predicated on the lie that Ritter killed oil and gas.

What else does he have to run on? An unpopular tax (FASTER)? That’s great, but it just begs the question of where do you cut spending?  Blame Dems for killing jobs? Are you sure that dog will hunt when the past 2 jobs reports show jobs increasing? What if they keep increasing up till the election?

So, if you were McInnis, what would your campaign platform be?

      2. There was substance to the Dem message in 2008. IT was “how about electing intelligent grownups to office, instead of gop figurehead puppets”

        Guess you missed that.

  4. I loved the Budget Santa, but for some reason, this doesn’t seem so brilliant.

Of course, it would be fun to see how many GOP lawmakers actually USE them in chambers or in their offices…  With office supply budgets running tight, this little trick might go a lot further than I think.

    1. For my money (and some of it was), the best by-far was the “McCain is a Raiders Fan” airplane banner that they flew over Mile High during the game right before the election.

My season-ticket holding father-in-law is about as staunch Republican as you can get, and even he laughed his ass off at it.

  5. to look good in this time of disaster is suspend his campaign, ala John McCain and head back to GJ to hole-up while D’s conduct the recovery effort.  While there, he can explain how his plan for more government jobs will help Mesa County.

From Scooty’s chalk board plan video:

“As part of the first phase of his Strategic Plan for Colorado, the front runner for governor says his first trip out of state once elected will be leading a delegation to the Pentagon to bring military jobs to the state.”

Guess Scooty could use the fuzzy calculators to figure out how much he would need to raise taxes to pay for his new government jobs.

“The days of McCain and McInnis are over.”   -Don Bain, former chairman of the Colorado Republican Party

  6. http://www.gazette.com/article

With his hair trimmed and mustache shaved off, Scott McInnis, a Republican gubernatorial candidate, unveiled the first stage of his plan for economic recovery at a speech in Colorado Springs on Wednesday morning.

    Which is it?

    Plan or no plan?

As for balancing the budget itself, Duffy said McInnis is still working out the details of his plan… [Pols emphasis]

    1. To be fair, is balancing the budget really the same thing as economic recovery? If that’s the case it kind of undercuts the whole basis of the Obama presidency, doesn’t it?

      1. Colorado has to have a balanced budget. McInnis saying he doesn’t have a plan to balance the budget is the same thing as saying he doesn’t have a plan for the budget.

But who needs a plan when you’ve got AWESOME poll numbers. What’s that Scooter? Oh, you and Hick were in a statistical dead heat before he even announced? Gulp.
