BREAKING: Trump Caves, Government To Re-Open

  • by: Colorado Pols

UPDATE #2: Sen. Michael Bennet turns to the next order of business, getting all these federal workers paid:

Along with this statement:

“For 35 days, more than 800,000 public servants bared the brunt of this reckless government shutdown. The next three weeks provide an opportunity for bipartisan and constructive conversations on how to secure our border in a way that reflects our values as Americans.

“Now that President Trump has come to his senses, we must ensure his administration immediately restores back pay to federal workers and gives these families a chance to get back on their feet.”

Rep. Jason Crow:

Over 20,000 Colorado workers and their families have spent the past four weeks dealing with pain and chaos. Our top priority as a country now must be getting our federal workers paid and back to work as quickly as possible. As this senseless shutdown ends, we must restore servant leadership to Washington and make sure we never use people and their paychecks as political pawns in policy discussions again.

UPDATE: Statement from Rep. Diana DeGette:

“This government shutdown should never have happened, and we need to make sure it never happens again. I met with a group of federal workers at home today who have been forced to bear the brunt of the president’s misguided actions, and the harm that it has caused them will be felt for a very long time. The president’s announcement today was a total capitulation to the House and I hope we can take him at his word that he will continue to negotiate in good faith on a border security bill. In the meantime, it’s important that we work quickly to get the government reopened as soon as possible, and ensure that every federal worker is paid the money they are due.”

—–

Big Macs for everybody!

That’s the word from CNN with President Donald Trump speaking moments ago–the federal government will re-open later today, and Trump does not get the wall money he just dragged the nation through over a month of uncertainty and financial peril for hundreds of thousands of federal employees in order to win:

President Donald Trump said Friday he’s reached a deal to reopen the federal government after a month-long shutdown.

“I am very proud to announce today that we have reached a deal to end the shutdown and reopen the federal government,” Trump said in remarks from the Rose Garden…

The path included signing a stopgap funding measure that would fund the government through February 15. But sources said it would not include any new funding for Trump’s promised border wall, once an ironclad demand that led to the shuttering of government agencies over the past month.

Instead, lawmakers would return to negotiations over the money while federal workers return to their jobs.

Needless to say this is a huge defeat for the President, one that cuts to the bone of his demagogic agenda and is costing him support across the country. We’ll update with local reactions–likely to range from elation for the majority of Coloradans who wanted nothing to do with Trump’s wall crusade, to the bitter weeping and gnashing of teeth of Trump’s diehard faithful whose hopes after a make-or-break gamble have been dashed.

It’s all part of history now, like the debacle of the shutdown will be shortly.

  1. I'm sure the far right wing paid entertainers; people like Hannity, Limbaugh, Coulter; will be blaming you liberals, and the Dems in Congress.

    1. Certainly they will blame the liberals, but who else are they going to blame?

The entertainers do not have to be loyal to Trump and if they see their best interest as throwing him under the bus to entertain their fans they will probably do it.

On the other hand they can also double down on Trump support and blame Republicans in Congress as weak.

Crying, "Betrayal!" and going after RINOs is one of their main sports after all. Which also brings up the possibility that this deal might yet fall apart due to Republicans caving to the entertainers, again.

It will be interesting to see if the current level of disapproval of Trump stays up in the coming weeks. While the negativity around past shutdowns has always disappeared after a short time many things in the current political environment have defied expectations.

  2. As a side note (sorry if this hijacks this thread — I'm enjoying *rump's humiliation by Grandma Pelosi as much as anyone), does anyone besides me think that Bennet's sudden outspokenness is a prelude to his formal announcement of running for President?

The nationwide publicity certainly doesn't hurt.

    1. Andrea Mitchell today was surprised by Bennet's outburst on the Senate floor because she said he was previously "docile".  (Did you see that Zap?)

I guess I would have called him “Low T”.

    2. I really think he was responding to the moment.  Cruz being smarmy about "let's pay the workers" is the height of hypocrisy, and Bennet has spent a great deal of time trying to push the government to pay victims of the floods.

Which is NOT to say that some consultant has advised him to "let your emotions show more" — it isn't like he will become TOO emotional for the campaign trail.

      1. Don't get me wrong — I'm proud that he gave Cruz a well-deserved dressing down.  But the follow up letter to *rump is what got me wondering, as you indicated, a campaign consultant might have had something to do with this sudden rise in visibility.

        1. Just say No to Bennet and /or Hickenlooper for President. They have each risen, like a well-aerated turd, to their levels of competence.

And before you trot out your usual " Wouldn't they be better than ________(right wing nut)?" Of course they would, and yes, I'd reluctantly vote for them. Again. But here's hoping for better choices.

          1. Not my usual, and I do agree with you about the already risen above and well beyond, but,

“Wouldn’t they be better than Jill Stein?” . . .

            (. . . just cuz’ it’s Saturday, I spose’) wink

          2. Hi MJ —  I don't believe either Bennet or Hick will rise above mid-pack (of 20 or more candidates).  If they surprise me and somehow manage to win the nomination, like you I'd vote for them.  But that's as far as my defense of them goes at this point wink

            1. Davie – I agree that Bennet or Hick are strictly mid-pack candidates. VP material on a good day. So , because I respect your political savvy, along with Madco, I have to ask who are your top 3? Could be personal preference or Most Likely To…..

              1. Bloomberg has cash and name recognition. He cannot win "the south" but he might be ok in PA, MI, WI and the rest of the D states from 2016. His "type" of candidacy model is proven.

Corey Booker is easy to like. Likewise Sherrod Brown.

Electoral math says any progressive candidate must win: all the 2016 D states plus (+PA+MI+WI+)
OH, FL, VA would be nice.

If only there was a purple state governor who was able to be re-elected, not tagged by serious people as a crazy LWNJ and has not already said no way or reported disqualifying health or other factors.

Mark Dayton – said no way.
Pat Quinn and Rod Blagoeivich – not re-elected and probably have 'other factors"
Jennifer Granholm was re-elected, but she was born in Canada and has other factors.
Jim Doyle, Tom Wolf – who?

                I like Senator Bennet.
I prefer he be more aggressively progressive – especially on wage and income inequality.  But also healthcare, and voting rights. But as senators with a shot – I would put Brown or Booker ahead of him.

                Since I mentioned Senators
Warren has baggage, not all of it good or understood.
Gillibrand cannot win Minnesotaould and will struggle in Wisconsin.
Harris – needs to prove she can win PA and MI. Not certain she has been vetted enough.

Sure it's early – but not really. If the former Colorado governor can prove fundraising ability at the relevant scale, he's a frontrunner. No one will care that he's friends with Kasich or O&G. And both help in the general.

    1. To say nothing of the news networks picking up on the stock trend of Jet Blue:

JetBlue Airways Corp.  (JBLU – Get Report)  CEO Robin Hayes said on Thursday that the U.S. aviation system was nearing a "tipping point" due to the partial government shutdown, which is in its 35th day.

On a conference call with investors, Hayes said the shutdown may cause delays, long lines and cancelled flights. The stock declined 0.8% on Friday.

Take a look at what happened when the ground stops were happening Friday morning: down 1.8% between 9:30 and 12:30.

  3. Of course Bennett was trying to get his POTUS campaign off the ground with that speech and letter, but the real winners here are airport workers and women in the person of one Nancy Pelosi. Let's just that makes "wo to Trump."

      1. The office Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) has so far not issued a statement about the deal.

Cool cool cool. Love living in the 4th district. I've got the best representative. Great guy. Cool.

        1. Ken Buck's Twitter feed is revealing, though.  He was named the ranking member of the committee on immigration and citizenship. That should be enough to give cold chills to anyone who hopes for fair treatment of immigrants.

This was the guy who, as Weld County DA, denied a U visa to a woman in fear for her life, and who helped to organize the big raid that illegally seized 5000 tax records and rounded up 100 people.  He's probably really disappointed that his fearful leader caved on the Great Wall, but doesn't want to come out and say so.

As one of the foremost promoters of scary falsehoods about ISIS (the "Julesburg Jihad") and immigrants, Buck's leadership position on that committee should scare everyone.

It also turns out that Bucko was "standing with" the March for Life, the event that got so out of hand that a mob of 200 Covington High students was surrounding and jeering at a Native elder and four Black Hebrew Israelite provocateurs. Huh…who could have predicted that outcome, Ken Buck?  Where is your photo op with these "patriotic Americans"?

I feel your pain, pigeon, as a fellow 4th district resident. We got closer last year than ever to giving Buck the boot. Vick Meyers got 23%, Bob Seay got 32%, Karen McCormick got 39% of the CD4 vote. Buck still won, but his margins are getting smaller.  We have to keep the pressure on.

          1. I hope that redistricting means he never gets to be in Congress again, but, like, that means he still has another election to go before he can be written off.
