What’s a little tired sloganeering between friends, anyway? The Denver Post’s Lynn Bartels relates her weekend TV double-take at The Spot:
I was only half listening to CNN from the other room, when I heard a speech from someone opposing the health care bill.
“A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have,” the woman said.
That was enough for me to get up out of my chair, go into the other room and see if for some strange reason CNN had cut to [Jane] Norton during the health care debate. Norton used the same quote last September when she announced her Senate bid.
It turned out to be [Rep. Cathy McMorris] Rodgers, a Republican from Washington state, on the floor of the House. I grabbed the clicker and played her speech back. It turns out the quote about “government big enough” is from President Gerald Ford when he addressed the joint session of Congress in 1974.
Rodgers gave Ford credit for the quote…
We don’t suppose you can really call it “plagiarism,” since political slogans tend to end up in the public domain pretty quickly anyway. If it’s any consolation, Jane Norton doesn’t give the 1970s credit for her big idea to abolish the Department of Education, either.

Who said that?
Gerry Ford was a nice guy to be sure, but if you’re going to rip off a president why not rip off a notable one? How about some JFK, Reagan, or either Roosevelt?
.
the guy was a world-class athlete (look it up) and smarter than any of your recommendations (not sure if that can be looked up.)
style vs. substance.
.
and you’re all pissed off at soon to be Senator-elect Jane Norton.
Cucumber Cool Martini
By The Denver Post
Ingredients
1 1/2 ounce cucumber simple syrup (recipe follows)
1/2 ounce fresh-squeezed lemon juice
4 ounces vodka
4 basil leaves
Peeled cucumber slice for garnish
Kosher salt
Directions
In a martini shaker, add a few ice cubes, the basil, the lemon juice and the cucumber syrup. With a wooden pestle, muddle the basil with other ingredients. Fill the shaker with more ice cubes, add the vodka and shake well. Strain the liquid into a chilled martini glass; garnish with a slice of cucumber coated in salt.
Cucumber syrup: Peel 1 large cucumber. Cut off the ends, cut into chunks and blend in a blender. Pass through a cheesecloth and chill. In a small pot, whisk together 1/2 cup sugar and 1/4 cup water. Bring to a boil and chill. Add 1 part of syrup to 2 parts cucumber puree and chill until ready to use. Makes about 2 cups.
The GOP uses this quote constantly; sometimes they credit Ford, other times they don’t. Since Ford really isn’t revered on the Right, it only makes sense that it’s come into their vernacular sans credit for Ford.
