Mayoral Candidate Ethics and Transparency...With Scott Gessler

  • by: Colorado Pols

Denver’s Municipal election takes place on Tuesday, May 7. Give low turnout numbers and a handful of candidates who are relatively unknown, the race for Mayor could take on plenty of weird twists before the final votes are counted.

But any twist that happens next would have to be one hell of a pretzel to compete with this mail/walk piece from Denver Mayoral candidate  Penfield Tate:

In the mailer/walk piece below, the final message text is this:

You deserve a mayor that is accessible, ethical and transparent and one who will get the job done RIGHT.

This is all well and good…

…and then Tate’s campaign lists the endorsement of former Republican Secretary of State Scott Gessler, quite possibly the most corrupt and ethically-challenged elected official Colorado has seen in decades.

This is not the first time we’ve pointed out that Scott Gessler is a terrible name to have on your list of endorsements, particularly at the top of said list and particularly when you are running for office in a solidly-Democratic city like Denver. In April 2011, we marveled at the stupidity of Tom Downey, a candidate for Denver Clerk and Recorder who emailed supporters to tout an endorsement from the very same Scott Gessler. We probably don’t need to remind you that Downey did not get elected that year.

Nor is it much of a stretch to predict that Penfield Tate won’t be winning an election on Tuesday.

  1. I like Tate for mayor, but I agree this was a poor choice to display support.

Unfortunately, Jamie Giellis didn't even vote in 10 of the last 20 elections. Has Colorado Pols ever mentioned that?

I'm sorry, but VOTING is the very first responsibility of a citizen.  If you don't bother to vote, then why in hell should we put you in the top office of the city.

  2. I had some hopes for the mayoral election this year.  They've been dashed, one by one.

Anyone have a sense of whether some sort of structural change would encourage better candidates to emerge?

    1. Gessler's been lying (and knew he lied) about "rampant voter fraud from illegal immigrants" for years. He intentionally blew out the Sec State budget so that he could argue that business fees shouldn't pay for elections. (the Independence Institute's big crusade).

Far from being a neutral public servant, Gessler has weighted every possible decision in favor of the Republican party interests.

He's been a dishonest partisan for all of his time in public office, and that hasn't changed now that he's helping the Neville  family to get rich off of recalls.  So boohoo, you're defending Scott Gessler's fee-fees and reputation.

He'll still be rich. He'll still be partisan. He'll still be helping  grifters in the interests of Republicans. That's not "sliming", it's exposing the slime coating Gessler's every deed.

    2. Are you an unrepentant, lying, cheating GOP scumbag that no self-respecting person would dare defend?

      Better Call Fladen

  3. Tate has bigger ethical and transparency issues than being endorsed by our ignominious and thankfully former Sec. of State. But this is pretty tone deaf.

  4. When I knew former Rep. Mark Larson some 15 years ago, he was a businessman in Cortez. Why would he endorse a Denver mayoral candidate unless he now lives here?
